Anthony And Joe Russo Talk CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 And The Winter Soldier's Return

We know that The Winter Soldier will be back in Captain America 3, and Anthony and Joe Russo have now dropped some more hints about what to expect from his arc as Steve Rogers continues to hunt his former friend down. It also sounds like the movie will take place "several" years after the last...

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was obviously a major departure from 2011's WWII set The First Avenger, and despite the fact that it took place roughly two years after the events of The Avengers, the biggest changes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in the final act of that movie when S.H.I.E.L.D. was disbanded. Based on several different reports, Avengers: Age of Ultron is shaping up to be another game changer (especially of recent reports of Cap assembling a brand new team are to be believed), and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Joe Russo alluded to just that. "The difference between First Avenger and Winter Soldier is that seventy years had elapsed between the two movies. Cap was waking up in a world that was a million miles away from the one he came from. That gave us a narrative motivation to push the he tonal and stylistic content of the world forward. We don’t have that same time elapsed here. It’s the world Cap woke up in still, even though it’s several years later and some other significant events have happened. At the same time, we are pushing Cap to a place he hasn’t been before."

There are really two ways of reading into these comments. Either he's referring to the fact that it's been several years since Steve Rogers woke up in the present day or that several years have passed since the events of The Winter Soldier. Personally, I would say the latter, but even if that's not the case it still sounds as if the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron will shake things up for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Of course, during all of this, the hunt for Bucky is still on, and after Joe asked, "[If] you don’t have the memories of who you are, are you still that person?" Anthony responded, "It’s a a rich, philosophically complex human identity and relationship. And it becomes an important question for Cap, a guy who’s lost everybody in his life now." So, it sounds as if the threequel will take a very different direction to the comic books as Bucky won't instantly regain his memories and Steve will have to wrestle whether this man is the same he fought alongside during the war. I'm not sure I like a time jump for Cap 3. The Winter Soldier set it up so that Steve and Sam would immediately embark on their mission to find Bucky...only to get side-tracked with Age of Ultron. I figured Cap 3 would then pick up soon after the events of that.

Of course, Age of Ultron could take place over a long length of time too. So who knows? Most of our questions will probably be answered in that movie anyway. So stoked!

Say 8-12 months from CapTWS to AoU...then a year or so till Cap3..maybe 2...We are talking 3 years there..

I could see the movie closing with a split of the team, then a flash forward some threat popping and Cap doing an "Avengers Assemble" and a mostly new team makes a quick, suited up appearance for about 2 seconds.....roll credits...

sauronsbane- perhaps they where looking for bucky but couldent find him so he joined the avengers and stark promises to help him if cap helps him. so tony is using computers to search for bucky but he is very difficult to find.

@kinghulk, That's certainly possible! I've heard that Age of Ultron WILL acknowledge Cap's mission to find Bucky, so maybe you're right: Tony tells him to put aside Bucky for now, promises to help him, but right now they need to deal with the bigger threat in Age of Ultron.

Marvel has so many things to work with. They really could go in any number of possibilities with Bucky and the events of Age of Ultron and where that leaves the team by the end of the movie...which makes it that much more exciting. Looking forward to see how they do it!

"It’s the world Cap woke up in still, even though it’s several years later and some other significant events have happened. At the same time, we are pushing Cap to a place he hasn't been before."

So, what you're saying is that we shouldn't even be trying to speculate?

@DaVinci31

Basically they are saying that while potentially based on the comics, its likely a scenario that is fresh and 'new'

I get the feeling it'll be a mix between 'The Death Of Captain America' and the idea of Cap founding his own group of Avengers (Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Falcon and Ms Marvel)

Rather than Captain America die I feel their will be a twist where Bucky is the one who is killed, possibly via Crossbones. Then again the actor was signed up for 6 films... so Cap might actually die.

"Hopefully they get MODOK right in this one...they really screwed his portrayal in The Winter Soldier..pffft Modok Computer screen dizney princess."

Ndio I don't know if I was hallucinating but I could have sworn I saw the words "Secret Wars" in the title. I couldn't read the whole article before my stupid phone refreshed the page and it was gone :-(

Okay, so is Cap 3 going to take place after Avengers 2 or before it?

Then again, I do believe that Marvel/Fiege filled them in on all the details of all the final events set to happen within AoU so that their script will be legit towards being a continuation of Caps story from outside of the Avengers film.

I just hope they capture Cap's character from TWS in AoU.

I mean the Russo Brothers turned this...

Into this...

However I do like his look in A:AoU...

Looking at all 3, TWS looks the best so far. AoU suit looks hella loose and baggy. But that might not be the case in the movie.

Also, theory time;
Agents Of Shield is leading up to a 'Secret Invasion' storyline with the Kree instead of the Skrull. Skye will be revealed to be the movie-verse version of Carol Danvers, who will be revealed as Ms Marvel in Avengers 2.

Age Of Ultron will feature the dividing of the groups into east and west coast Avengers, with Hulk being sent into space. Cap will lead the West Coast Avengers while Iron Man leads the east coast. The ending will reveal Coulson is alive to the team and Skye is Ms Marvel.

Cap 3 will basically introduce the West Coast Avengers featuring Ms Marvel, Falcon, Hawkeye and Black Widow. They will likely be battling against Baron Von Strucker (Who will have gained his metallic arm in 'Age Of Ultron')

Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 will feature the Avengers discovering Hulk and taking him back to Earth while also symbolising Quill's journey to discover his father. Nebula will take the power gem to Thanos, however attempt to betray him resulting in her death.

Thor 3 will feature the destruction of Asgard at the hands of Surtur along with Loki delivering the infinity gauntlet and cosmic cube to Thanos. The Collector will be killed when Thanos takes the Aether.

Avengers 3 will feature the East and West coast avengers teaming up as the Guardians Of The Galaxy arrive with Hulk. However, Thanos arrives with all the gems except Soul (In possession of Doctor Strange) and time (In possession of Ms Marvel)

Red Skull NEEDS to return. Even if a different actor is needed. He's Cap's arch-nemesis after all. Superman needs his Lex Luthor, Batman needs his Joker. Cap is no exception.

They did a pretty amazing job in The Winter Soldier. I hope they do the same in this third movie. However, they got a lot of things to do and the movie may be overcrowded and overploted. I mean, they need to tell at least something about Bucky and his relation with Steve. And they need to tell a brand new story that's even bigger and better than the previous. And there's also the appearence of another Avenger in the movie. AND, if the rumors are true and he will summon his own team at the end of Age of Ultron, they need at least to mention this.

Dunno, but I bet they can do this well. And if they do, it may be the best Marvel movie yet
