Everyone has been wondering about the international box office for Marvel's latest comic book adaptation Captain America: The First Avenger, directed by Joe Johnston. Well, the first numbers are here, at it seems that Cap is doing great so far. Film opened in 23 markets with $53.5M.

Filmonic reports (via Twitter):

"Captain America opened to $53.5 million internationally in 23 markets. Thor opened in 53 markets with $83 million."

Now, before you say Thor got more, read it carefully...Captain America: The First Avenger opened in only 23 markets, while Thor opened in 53. That's almost double. So $53.5M is a great start, and I think we can expect good numbers from the international box office.

I will update the article if there is more info.

Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: The First Avenger is in theatres now!

I love movies, that's my claim. Captain America: The First Avenger was a poor movie. Maybe it was a good comic book movie, but it was a bad movie. im not a DC or Marvel fanboy, but a film fanboy. Captain America suffered from the same thing The Wolfman, Jurassic Park 3, and October Sky suffered from, a piss poor director

this is great news and TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY you seriously need to stop making claims since your last one about Cap was totally wrong

I'm really worried about Cap's box-office numbers in France since it opens one week after Green Lantern. If GL is that not impressive, I fear some will drop out super-hero movies right after such a disappointment...

TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY: Sigh...Dude, can you just read the article before saying anything? It opened only in 23 markets, and $53M is a very, very good start. And who cares about Superman Returns right now?
NerdyGeek
NerdyGeek - 7/31/2011, 11:31 AM
Anyways do you think Paramount and Marvel give a shit? I'm serious. Paramount have had TF3, which has made over $900 million and also so much more, and Marvel has had Thor and First Class which have made together around $800 million.

thats a really great start, guys

only in 23 markets and 53 millions??

that's pretty good...

I can see the movie getting 150-200 in the foreign market easily.

@Intruder

why do you keep comparing Cap TFA to GL.Why don't you compare it to Transformers? or say Spider-man 1 or Say Superman?

$53 mill is not so awesome as boldly it is shouted on this site.and most probably Cap will be ending near $350 mill.

It's not making $400+ not cuz its a bad movie but cuz of wrong time of release.

Tough crowd. Someone here didnt like October Sky? I felt Cap was more epic because the fate of the our world was at stake. Didnt really care about the frost giants.

I hope Cap keeps going strong, I've seen it three times now and it's hands-down one of my favorite CBMs. Fingers crossed for some sequel news...

Why do people choose sides all the time? DC or Marvel? Seems pretty pathetic to me. Why can't you like both?

You guys should go to boxofficemojo.com

As of right now,

Thor leads the CBMs this summer with almost $450 mil, Xmen is next with $330-$350 mil, Cap is next with $180 mil, and then there is Green Lantern with $150 mil i do believe...and these are worldwide figures.

Theres your big four, so far; though Harry Potter and Transformers are over a billion and a little under a billion respectively.

JULEZ13 - 7/31/2011, 12:10 PM
@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY: Seriously?!? I'm actually gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Captain America was by far the best CBM of the year!! It was great. The direction was very well done. Johnston did a much better job directing than Branagh did. SMH. You buggin.

I was expecting CA to beat Thor and every other CBM of this year in all B.O. numbers. This doesn't surprise me. I'm happy to hear it though.

@GODDAMNSUPERGUY- Dude I'm with "JULEZ" on this. I normally don't disagree with you but [frick] man...Cap was the best film of 2011. Well that or First Class.

Green Lantern sucked big time.

Thor was weaker than GL (in my honest opinion but neither was that great)

But come on dude, Cap was epic. It had- story, action, romance all meshed so well together.

Superman Returns was an ABORTION of a Superman film. By ragging on Captain America, you are thereby promoting Bryan Singer and his abortion Superman film as a great thing when it really wasn't.

I am no Marvel-fan. But I gotta say...GO CAP!!!

At least Captain America gave us a great film before Superman did. I mean...5 Superman films and none of them were anywhere near as good as Cap's film (again, just my opinion)
LP4
LP4 - 7/31/2011, 12:24 PM
And it's sad to admit it...but just ONE Captain America film impressed me and inspired me more than all 5 Superman films combined.

THAT is how you know Cap was a success. Superman could learn a few things from Captain America and DC could learn MANY things from Marvel.

@Intruder

Will it be B.S. next year if Rango says TDKR made more money then Thor, Captain America and I will go there,The Avengers? Look everybody is playing this game.You yourself have come on the DC threads and taken your shots as well.Do what you have been doing and lay out your numbers.As a DC guy I mostly don't agree with you, but (for what it's worth) I respect you making a case based on numbers we can all go over.What has Rango said that is B.S.?

@fsucsu
Did you just leave Superman,Superman 2 and Batman Returns off the list of good DC films? If you want to go there.Those films are loaded with pop culture Icons.Say the name Christopher Reeve(God rest his soul) and people will think Superman,say "Kneel before Zod" and people remember Terrance Stamp.Michelle pfeiffer is still remembered as the Catwoman.People still remember Jim Carry from Batman Forever. Gene Hackman and frickin Brando are still remembered from Superman.Toby Maguire as Spider-Man,and Huge Jackman as Wolverine,Halley Berry as Storm,Patrick Stewart as Prof X and Ian Mckellan as Magneto in the X-Men films, are Iconic, but outside of RDJ as Ironman,the rest of Marvel Studios(in house) product has yet to rise to that level.Maybe after the Avengers but not yet. Great your a Marvel fan and have much to be proud of,but lets have a little respect.

SageMode - 7/31/2011, 12:27 PM
This is very good news. Cap was (IMO) the best CBM this year. I liked it even more than Iron Man and Thor. It didnt feel rushed and it had more action in it than Thor and Iron Man combined.

For this to be making the amount that it is this early is great. I cant wait to see how much it does internationally when the number are stopped tallied.
LP4
LP4 - 7/31/2011, 12:30 PM
And to end my rant...

@GODDAMNSUPERGUY-

At least Captain America didn't let down his fans.

This is Cap's year. And as long as Superman doesn't [frick] up again...then MAYBE 2013 will be his year. But competing with Thor2 and IM3 I just don't know. Marvel/Disney has proven far more competent with their CBMs than DC/WB. I may be a DC-fanboy but I aint blind. Marvel is where it's at with CBMs.
marvel72
marvel72 - 7/31/2011, 12:32 PM
i know we're all entitled to our own opinions.f*ck me i say what i think,but if you think this version of captain america sucked what do ya think of the captain america movie of the 90s? compared to that this was like the godfather.
