Russo Bros Explain Why AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Being Shot Entirely In IMAX Is “Appropriate”

We’ve known that Avengers: Infinity War – Part I and Part II will be the first movies ever shot entirely in IMAX, but now the directors have explained why they’re using the format to that captivity and also how much of it will be used for Captain America: Civil War. Check it out!

Not too long after Captain America: Civil War had begun filming earlier this year, it was announced that directors Anthony & Joe Russo would use new 2D digital IMAX cameras for an action sequence in the Marvel threequel, and later shoot the two-part Avengers: Infinity War entirely in the format. Now, while promoting their new China/LA based film studio, the filmmakers have elaborated on the decision to make IMAX history with the highly-anticipated “Phase Three” movies, and much more.
It's about 20 minutes of IMAX,” said Joe Russo when asked how much of the large format will be used in Captain America: Civil War. “It's our first time using these new Arri 65 cameras in the IMAX format and it's beautiful. Once we saw the 20 minutes of footage that we had shot, that's when we made the decision to do both movies of the Infinity War [entirely] in it. The scale is appropriate for superhero storytelling. There's a lot of characters in those movies, a lot of characters who are tall characters. Big characters who are much taller than regular humans.”

Though Russo was referring to Infinity War having tall characters such as Thanos or the Hulk, he might’ve hinted that those 20 minutes of Civil War IMAX is when we see a certain other giant hero. Unfortunately, this wasn't addressed in the interview, but Joe Russo further explained why the format is necessary: “So, when you have that beautiful IMAX top and bottom frame, it creates a much grander format for a movie like that to be viewed in. I just feel like the thing that distinguishes movies right now is that wide-screen format and the difference of why you go out of your house to go to the theater; it's to have that experience that you can't have at your house. For us, we wanted to really deliver on the promise of those movies. There're 20 movies behind them, so they're the culmination of 20 films and it needs a big beautiful format to tell that story.”

After reassuring he and his brother will employ a different large-scale format style on Infinity War, as opposed to the hand-held camera style from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War, Joe Russo was asked which heroes we can expect to join the long-awaited battle against Thanos. “You won't be disappoint in the scale of those movies, or in the amount of characters that are in them,” he explained. “As mentioned, 20 films of storytelling will intersect in those movies. We don't have any surprises for anybody [right now]. Those movies are a couple years away. Let people speculate about who they want to see in those films, and why they want to see them. And we'll see how the storytelling continues to develop in the movies that have still yet to come out. But you won't be disappointed in the amount of characters.” We can guess, but time will tell.

Thanks to CBM reader Weeping Angel, you can now watch the full interview below where the Russos reassure Hulk was excluded from Civil War due to storytelling and not budget. More interestingly, they dance around the question of whether or not Loki or Thor will make cameos. Anyhow, Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Part II open May 4, 2018, and May 3, 2019, respectively.

Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain. Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, and Martin Freeman, Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016.

I think the amount of characters is the exact reason some people might be scared for IW1 and 2.

DrDoom- "Whereas with the Black Order you have to hire a whole new set of actors for characters who will get no time to develop."
regarding that they could survive infinity war and serve as the villians for GOTG3 it's not like the guardians have many big villains although i would love to see annihilation conquest.

regarding villians in infinity war it seems like bringing back all the old villains would steal thanos's thunder a bit which i dont want to happen. although i do want red skull and ultron to return in the future but there are other ways for that to happen.
