Captain America: Marvel's Future

Captain America has always been a leader in the comics so is it time he became the leader of the movie franchise.

In the comic we have mostly seen Captain America as the leader of the Avengers. He is the tactician and despite being less powerful than other members has been one of the teams greatest assets. Has this carried across to the MCU? ...well not really.

The Captain was mostly sidelined in the Avengers to make way for Robert Downey Jr. Now I love him as Tony Stark and he has made a huge contribution to establishing the MCU but just because he has become popular that doesn't mean he should be elevated above the other characters. He wins all the arguments and makes the Captain seem like an idiot as does most of the movie. It is also Iron Man who saves the day whilst Captain America just punches a few Chitauri which makes up a tiny fraction of the attacking army.

We don't want Steve Rogers to become like Cyclops in Fox's X-men, pushed aside by a more popular Wolverine. He should be leading the team, coming up with the plans, holding his own bantering with Tony and kicking some serious ass. The character is awesome in The First Avenger and looks like he will be again in Winter Soldier. Yet in the Avengers he is just nearly as dull as the aforementioned Cyclops of the X-men movies (not quite, I mean that character adaptation was terrible.)

In my personal opinion Captain America should be more serious than the other characters which Marvel studios have appropriately done. It is just a shame that his introduction to the modern world was glossed over. This scene should really have been included:

It is the things like this which the MCU is lacking. I love their movies especially The First Avenger and The Avengers but they do need some deeper scenes like this. We don't want to go see a one of their films to find it has become nothing more than Superheroes punching each-other and then saying one-liners.

Also as a side-note I would like to say that I much preferred his costume in The First Avenger to in The Avengers. Winter Soldier is an improvement but I really like the one from the first movie.

I didn't see Cap sidelined in Avengers, he called the shots once the team was assembled. Nor did Stark "win" any arguments with him, he's just a loud smart-ass and Cap is not. Cap wan't made to look like an idiot either, but a man from a different time who doesn't understand modern references.
Iron Man saves the day because of the plot point, namely the World Security Council deciding to send a nuke over the city. I guess Thor could've flown the nuke out of the way too. But it had to be Tony because the movie foreshadowed it earlier when Cap called out Tony about never making a sacrifice for others.

I agree with alexander. I think Cap firmly comes into his own in this movie. I thought he did a great job playing wide eyed and lost. The only time he was comfortable was in combat. By the time Avengers 3 comes around Cap will be a fully formed leader.

Yeah that costume was good in the first film. Another "whilst". Agree with Pedrito, Steve was more "out of place" than idiot. And the movie did have to pay off the Iron Man arch. Still I think they successfully conveyed Cap's leadership.

Alexander I agree that we will see Steve come into his own soon. I was just disappointed by his role in the Avengers and hope it won't take too long before we see the real Captain America.

Character development. They've only been able to focus on steve for one film: TFA. By the end of Winter Soldier he'll be the cap we all know.

Heck, in the trailer, Fury said, "so you're calling all the shots now huh?" , Cap replied with "Damn right".

Patience, he'll get there, within a few months.

Captain America has more screen time in Avengers than than Iron Man. Not by much but it's unfair to say other wise

He was used well in Avengers I think. I love the deleted scene you mentioned and agree he should take up the leadership later. But he did strategize the whole final battle so I wouldn't say he didn't have a leadership role in the movie.

Then again, this is actually true to the comics. Cap didn't come to be the leader in the comics for a while. And ultimately even in the comics Tony and Steve have a sort of joint leadership.

Cap is the battle strategist. Iron Man is the tech guy.

Plus even in Avengers Steve actually won the argument they had before:

"Are you the guy to make the sacrifice play? Lay down on the wire and let him crawl over you."
"I think I'd just cut the wire."

Yet ultimately, Tony does realize he has to make the sacrifice play by saving New York from the bomb. Thus Tony understands what Steve was saying, and Steve realizes Tony is a hero in his own way.

At any rate I think he'll have more leadership in later movies.

Good article though.

Hey dumb ass, Cap has only been in one movie that takes place in the present. In that movie, he did lead the team when they were fighting the Chitauri. Remember that part that was plain as day when he started giving them all orders and they listened? Thats called being a leader.

Sure, he wasn't the leader leading up to that point, but thats where he finally proved himself to be the man for the job. Did you not watch it or something?

I think that the avengers did a good job with cap. The leader aspect of him was introduced (I lost mi shit at hulk smash) but that wasnt carried through all the battle, I think that It was because they couldnt come up with good fight scenes for him, but after TWS that's no longer an issue, and I think he sill be more important to the team. I thik they should bring the Russos in AAOU so they can help with cap's stuff

Good article. Maestro I was gonna make the same point, Cap will come into his own in CA:TWS. He actually lead/planned the assaults in CA:TFA, he was the one plannin' with the maps, and when it came down to the final conflict, one of the howlin' commandos says, what are we suppose to do just knock on the front door, and says, that's exactly what we're gonna do. Then he heads in alone on his harley.
Whedon had Cap's character pretty much down pat, as does Markus and Mcfeely, the only thin' I would've changed in the Avengers with Cap is when Thor askes him if he's up for another bout, Cap should've said "I can do this all day".

Good thoughts dethpillow, and even if it's not as Nomad, he could become just The Captain as he did in the late 80's.
