In a recent issue of UK's Total Film Magazine, several details and interviews from the Brits' set visit of Marvel and Joe Johnston's much-anticipated Captain America: The First Avenger film are revealed. And one of those many interviews conducted was with Kevin Feige, head honcho of Marvel Studios, in which he speaks on the first avenger's mighty shield.

"We didn't want to reinvent it, just make it worthy of being in the movie," Kevin Feige says regarding Cap's mighty shield. "People expect us to take something that's in the comics and give it a little more texture & detail."

"The costume was in the works for a long, long time," says Fiege. "We knew that in the period setting we wanted to have something with the silhouette of the superhero costume, but wasn't made out of foam latex or CG. It had to look modern and heroic, but also of the period. So the straps, the material, all make it so that he doesn't stand out too much walking around a battlefield next to other soldiers."

Captain America: The First Avenger focuses on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci and Hugo Weaving, the film releases July 22, 2011.

Im just happy to see an article without epic in the title.

Also, I feel like for every article with new Cap details is 90% recycled quotes and news

I really like how dedicated they are to making the story and characters in this movie as good as they can be. This seems like something this movie will do better than GL (if the majority of its reviews are right about it, of course).

Intruder, I think that's exactly what he's getting at...

Also, the sheep is creeping me out more than the weird, staring eyeball thing you had a while back.

It would be really cool to see him having a conflict with the government, that would mean he can take his own decisions and is not just some tool following orders blindly. That's pretty much the true spirit of Steve Rogers. This is getting better and better.

@ncreb i dont think it will be that excessive..but cap not seeing eye to eye with the govt isnt a new plot device (one of my favorite for his character honestly). this will be cool to solidify him as his own character, not just a super soldier.

I'm thinking the direct order is to not endander himself when he wants to go save his friend (Bucky), but he goes anyway.

@CloseetNerd i agree..most likely scenario is that the govt sees cap as too valuable to risk in combat while steve sees himself as the soldier capable of whatever mission they dont want him to go on (save bucky, or a small troop, or baby hippos, whatever).

I think it be great if Caps conflict with the government carried over in future movies and say after 2 or 3 Avenger movies they moved to the Civil War story line. I know there will be conflict between the Avengers in this first movie, but it be cool to seem some of them go head to head on the big screen.

It reminds me of the Civil War comic where the government asks him to be the poster boy for Registration but he won't do it because he thinks its wrong, which, you know, puts him against the government.

In a random side note, I was hoping they'd tie in the "wings" on the helmet to the "wings" the Airborne guys get after jump school. As in, hey Cap, I know you didn't go to jump school, but you're about to jump out of this plane into Nazi territory.... so you'll need these (paint wings on helmet)... Anybody feelin' me?!

yeah, but airborne training is only 3 weeks long....

despite a lot of running, it is the easiest of any military training programs.
HaroldOfGalactus
HaroldOfGalactus - 6/16/2011, 10:01 PM
and with boot camp being anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the decade, its not improbable to believe he trained for most of it before being injected with the ss serum and blasted with vita-rays. he was in the camp for about 2 months learning everything a combat infantryman needs to, was chosen to go first, and movie proceeds from there.

Government conflict: good

Problem, though: Wasn't the original Cap uniform Designed to stand out and apart from the common soldier? Wasn't he Supposed to be a symbol that forces could all rally around on the battlefield? I'll accept a good excuse (like it's more utilitarian or something), but that was kind of BS.

That and the baby hippos have to know which direction to run to for protection.

I think conflict with the government will come down to the fact that some of the top brass may see some soldiers as expendable (may be Bucky?)

Cap wouldn't agree with that - and goes AWOL to save his mate.
Ichaos
Ichaos - 6/17/2011, 3:24 AM
Its harsh but soldiers technically are expendable. In war nobody wants people on your side to die but they dont expect them all to make it back alive.

I dont know where the cap having a conflict with thr goverment is coming from but seems weak and out of character especially during WWII

Also that whole Civil war series, seems Cap was completely out of character. Kind of sucks when a writer bastardizes a character just to force their own personal views on it.

Epicenter: That has been my point about the outfit Cap is wearing in the movie from day one. Cap is NOT supposed to look like just another grunt. There was a distinct purpose and a good reason for him to wear a brightly colored costume (and in the colors of his nation's flag). I'm glad to find someone else here who understands that.

Paulyd: Seeing Cap fight Wolverine would be cool. I'd also enjoy seeing that.
niknik
niknik - 6/17/2011, 6:53 AM
What he just said!

Cap is SUPPOSED to stand out in a battle field. He INSPIRES the troops. They rally around the brightly colored leader proudly wearing our nations colors into battle. I think it's clear Feige missed that long standing point that Simon, Kirby, and Lee had spent so much time in making. Also all those silly gray and brown straps and hockey pads DO make the costume look out of place for a 40's period design and butt ugly to boot.

Then you need to go out and buy some Captain America books that depict him in WW II (from the 40's and silver-modern age) and do some reading. That is one of the central aspects of the character. That is THE REASON he was given the uniform, shield, and title. Not making that $hit up.

I don't argue with a lot of people on here that are "PURISTS" (ComicBOOKGuy) but sometimes you just have to let up a bit. I mean he doesn't [frick]ing look like anybody on the battlefield in this movie. He clearly still stands out. He's the only one with a shield and the only one with the US's colors as his uniform!
ClosetNerd

@haroldofgalactus... yeah, jump school is not hard these days. That's because they started letting chicks do it...which is retarded
..diluted standards. Back in the day jump school was tough, and also a big deal to soldiers...getting their wings, blousing your boots, etc.

Way back I was dreaming about a scene, in which maybe the Cap was in a landing boat heading for Normandy and the camera moves in trhough the soldiers going to the back of the boat, and one of the soldier's TagName read "LOGAN", that could be extremely AWESOME and wouldn't have "interfered" with FOX's rights... what do you think?
