Ava DuVernay's New Gods movie may not be moving forward, but the filmmaker has another DC project in the works: a small-screen adaptation of recent DC Comics series, Naomi.
Production has now officially begun on the CW series, and DuVernay has taken to Twitter to share a first look at star Kaci Walfall as the titular hero as she zips through what appears to be a school corridor on her skateboard.
DuVernay teamed with Arrow writer and co-exec producer Jill Blankenship to write and exec produce the project, which is based on the 2019 teen superhero tale of the same name from writers Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, and artist Jamal Campbell.
The comic follows Naomi McDuffie, a teenage superhero from an alternate Earth with energy-based powers who discovers that she was sent to the Prime Universe to be preserved from Zumbado, the destructive conqueror of her home planet.
The show is expected to focus on "a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes."
Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes are also on board as producers.
