COMICS: Marvel Cancels Two Future Milo Manara Variants After SPIDER-WOMAN Backlash

With the unveiling of a Spider-Woman #1 variant cover (seen above) by Italian artist Milo Manara gathering a heavy amount of attention (and criticism), Marvel has informed comic retailers that variants for Avengers & X-Men: AXIS #1 and Thor #2 will no longer be illustrated by Manara. The AXIS variant will be by Siya Oum, but the artist of the Thor cover has not been revealed. No reason was actually given, but one can assume that due to the controversy the cover generated, Marvel didn't wish to push it even further. Manara's Spider-Woman variant will still be published as seen in the November solicitations. What do you make of this?

I think I read about it, is this about some biaches angry because Spiderwoman was in the same position Spiderman has been for decades right?

I did not see anything wrong with the initial cover.

Thank you internet, once again, for shoving the stick further up your collective a**es.

This does not bode well for the future of the industry either. If they think this helps representation of women in comics, they're wrong. What's next, Wolverine stabs someone on a cover and the world will shout until it gets removed?

@BlackIceJoe

There's a perfectly valid explanation but The Sentry erased the memories from our minds. Only Spider Woman's rockin' cheeks stand as a reminder that Marvel once had a pair...

so seeing her in that is a problem but seeing frank miller draw this isn't a problem?

The world is really stupid sometimes.

Here are the problems people are having.

The drawing itself isn't amazing - the anatomy is off, as is the perspective and proportion of the figure. Her head is oddly placed, too.

What's turned this into a 'controversy' (it was being labelled such before there even was a controversy) is that Marvel has been working harder than ever before to make comics more inclusive to a female audience, publishing a whole range of titles with ladies as lead characters.

And then not only do they put Greg Land, a man who has traced faces and poses of women from porn, on Spider-Woman, they publish this variant, seemingly sending all the good work they've been doing back a step.

Completely stupid that this was such an issue. I read on some lame site called vox or something that one of the reasons so many people had a problem with it was because "The male version of spider man has never been in a similar pose, so why all of the sudden does the female version have to be in such a pose?" Those people obviously just spoke out of their @#$% otherwise they would have seen this piece.

Totally lame controversy and it sucks for the artist that he got kicked off of the other projects.

@staypuffed

See that's the part that baffles the hell out of me though. I rarely ever see anyone mention or talk about the fact that Greg Land is on the book. With the variant, controversial or not, it's not as readily accessible as a standard cover. I walk into a shop and could probably point out at least 20 different covers that are incredibly overt by comparison, yet hardly receives any criticism. Now I genuinely like the character of Spider-Woman. I loved what Bendis has done with her in the earlier 2000s. So when I heard it was being relaunched, I was looking forward to it. Then it was announced that Greg Land is drawing it, and my wallet now has an extra $3.99. I really like the Siya Oum variant and I want it, but I refuse to buy a book drawn by Land. The reasons you listed are the exact reason why too.

It's a variant cover though! Maybe they could have made it so that customers needed to ask for the variant cover and that the staff had to go to the back to get it. Hide it so that people won't see it in plain sight.

Manama is a shit artist anyway. That Spider-Man cover looked like it was done in an half an hour with colored pencils and half traced out of an issue of Hustler.

@Mrcool210- That cover is terrible. For that awkward, painful-looking pose, the parts of her costume that was added because Miller knows nothing about Wonder Woman, and to add more damage, it's a very offensive depiction of a feminist icon. But what more would you expect from a racist, misogynistic pile of garbage like Frank Miller.

Thanks guys for letting me know what I missed. Now that I see it, I still feel like I'm missing something. The reason why is because I see shots like that all the time and they even show shots like that of the guys in comics. So it just feels like there would have to be something else because that's mild.

Ignorant folks who aren't old enough or experienced enough to understand sexism and misogyny when they see it are arguably worse than so-called 'feminazis', white knights, or SJW's put together.

I think it's a bad cover due to the anatomy, but also have no problem with mainstream comics moving away from portraying women as simply damsels or [frick] things. It's a shame a lot of commenters don't take it seriously when someone is offended, writing it off as simply "feminazis". It might benefit everyone if you took the time to truly understand what bothers others, rather than blowing it off. When nerds flip their lids over their favorite hero or villain being mistreated in a movie adaptation, why is it difficult to understand a major percentage of the fans being sick of women being portrayed in a demeaning manner?

Io9 had a great article that addressed the issue and more:
