Thanks to "UltimateKidNova" and the guys over at Marvel's "Next Big Thing" live blog, we have the following details from writer Ed Brubaker and about upcoming series, Winter Soldier. As was revealed in the pages of Fear Itself #7.1, Bucky survived his encounter with Sin and plans on making up for his past crimes as the Winter Soldier from the shadows of the Marvel Universe. To read much more, be sure to click on the link below.

"I knew 90% of the angry 'You killed Bucky' fans were fans who were upset that I brought him back in the first place who I had won over. Hopefully I will be able to win them back again." - Ed Brubaker

Ed says the idea for Steve Rogers to return as Captain America and Bucky to go back to being the Winter Soldier with his own book has been the plan for some time. What changed was Bucky was initially going to "die" at the end of the Gulag storyline and disappear for a few months, but when Fear Itself came along, it made more sense to do it there.

Details from that Gulag storyline, especially the revelation that Bucky has secrets in his head about other Russian weapons and sleeper agents, will lead right into Winter Soldier.

"This is me trying to create a book that is James Bond meets Splinter Cell in the Marvel Universe." -Ed Brubaker

According to Tom, only Cap, Nick Fury and Black Widow will know Bucky is still alive.

"That's not to say he will not encounter other Marvel characters, but it will be in the shadows. If people know Bucky is still alive, that's a problem for Cap too, who knows he's doing stuff not exactly to the letter of the law." -Tom Brevoort

"There will be some classic Marvel bad guys involved in the series, but a lot of stuff in the first few arcs will be new characters with ties to Bucky's secret past during the Cold War and throughout his history." -Ed Brubaker

"This is a guy who for years was operating in a semi-amnesiac state where he did reprehensible things. Stepping back into this world is going to have a major effect on him. It's a dangerous tightrope to walk. There's nothing to say he won't crack." - Tom Brevoort

Strommy asking if Bucky will get new powers from the Infinity Formula ala Mockingbird. The answer is no. Mockingbird got an Infinity Formula/Super-Soldier Serum cocktail.

BUCKY FYI

As a young boy, James Buchanan Barnes lost his father (a soldier during WWII), and was adopted by Camp Lehigh as their mascot, and given the nickname "Bucky". It was here that he learned the identity of Captain America. He underwent rigorous training and was assigned to be Cap's sidekick, accompanying him on many adventures, and the two often worked with the original Invaders. However, on a final mission against Baron Zemo, Bucky and Cap hopped on an experimental drone plane in an attempt to disarm a bomb. The bomb detonated, dropping Cap in the North Atlantic, where he would later be found and thawed out by the Avengers. American forces never found Bucky's body, and he was presumed dead. Unbeknownst to the Americans, he was found and revived by Russian General Vasily Karpov.
When Bucky awoke, he had no memory of his identity, which gave Karpov an opportunity to reprogram Bucky as a Soviet assassin called the Winter Soldier. He was sent all across the globe, committing political assassinations with huge effects on the Cold War. However, his memory implantation caused mental instability, and he was kept in stasis between missions to prevent rebellionRecently, the Winter Soldier killed the Red Skull, and stole his Cosmic Cube for Karpov's successor, former General Aleksander Lukin. In order to mess with Cap's mind, Lukin also commanded the Winter Soldier to kill Jack Monroe and launch a major terrorist attack on the city of Philadelphia, fueling the Cosmic Cube's power in the process. However, when the Winter Soldier kidnapped S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter, she told Captain America upon her rescue that she believed her captor to be Bucky. Later, Nick Fury confirmed to Cap that the Winter Soldier was indeed his former partner.

When Lukin ordered the Winter Soldier to bury the Cosmic Cube in an underground bunker, Cap, with help from the Falcon and Iron Man, tracked him down and defeated him. After the battle, Cap used the Cosmic Cube to restore Bucky's memories, but he then destroyed the Cube and disappeared. All but Captain America believed him to be dead.

It was recently revealed that the Winter Soldier was involved in helping Wolverine escape from Weapon X, and was responsible for the loss of his wife and baby.

When the Superhuman Registration Act was passed, S.H.I.E.L.D's Nick Fury recruited Bucky for covert operations, so as to protect Captain America from government forces. In the aftermath of the seeming death of Steve Rogers, Barnes became the new Captain America. Rogers survived, but upon his return, he gave Barnes his blessings to continue as Captain America on the Avengers while he accepted a federal role as an administrator managing super-heroes.

Cool, I really like Bucky and was one of the 90 percent that was pissed that he was killed off.

One of the reasons I liked Bucky is that he's not exactly a golden boy like Cap so we could watch him kick some serious ass or even kill a few baddies.

I got excited when he became Cap cuz I thought him carrying a agun and sporting a dagger together with the black in his costume we would get a darker Cap, but it never lived up to its potential.

But still I like Bucky so Im glad he's still around, and a James Bond/Splinter cell thing is cool.

Bucky is still young because, after he became the Winter Soldier, he was put in suspended animation between missions. For example, he'd be rivived for a couple of months then be put in stasis for a couple of years. Reads the Winter Soldier story line by Brubaker or check out the Winter Soldier's bio at Marvel.com.

why bother killing him off in the first place? Also, I love how they feel the need to give cybernetic arms musculature. As if it's a highly practical feature.

@tomasocelot I think he was experimented on by Soviet scientists using their own version of the infinity formula as well as some cybernetic enhancements, such as his arm. He was also brainwashed into a Soviet assassin and I'm pretty sure he was cryogenically frozen between missions, so the only time he had to age was when he was on a mission. Then when he came back properly, he was initially a villain before he managed to fight his programming. Since he wasnt a Soviet assassin anymore, he stopped getting frozen, and is now just on Marvel's sliding time scale which is why he's no longer aging.

I can dig it!

@TheBlackWidow: I knew a woman who died once, then came back to life only to die several years later. I'd say that it was a shorter death. ;)

It was moronic to kill him if they knew they were going to keep his story going like this.

dumb, i am sick of death meaning nothing , why even bother killing people off. That is the one thing i like most about Ultimate marvel. Dead is dead, no matter what. The only person in ultimate to come back from the dead was Thor. Green goblin was told to be dead but it obvious that shield actually had him still. Death should mean something and it is just such a tired thing to try and get a money pop on the return of the hero. The worst part is it works every time and the average comic consumer still goes and buys that new comic with the resurrection, so i dont completely blame the comic book companies for doing it.

I see the demise of comics, not because sales slump (because God knows there are enough fanboys out there who willingly let DC and Marvel shovel shit into their mouths with these events and just keep on buying and lapping it all up like so much corn nibblette and peanut infused custard), but it is dying because there is no originality. The writing is fading, mainly because we are going through a writers version of what happened in the 90's with artist; there are a handfull of "superstars" that keep getting thrown onto too many books and each one is kind of one trick pony. Morrison is strange, Bendis is pop culture and wordy, Millar is just a self-promoting egotistical prick; Loeb is quickly falling into hackdom.

All they and the editorial staff at the big two want to do is event after event, after halfassed reboot and event. Christ, it’s a sad state. Marvel and DC need to just lay off 80% of their writing and editorial staffs and bring in new blood that understand story telling. A comic is a rare thing; it is a serial and a story need not be rushed. As a kid I remember plot lines taking years to unfold verses now when the event dictates it all needs to be wrapped up in six months, but it will run through twenty titles so the fans have to buy a hundred comics by the end of it. It’s all marketing, all flash and no bang. Anyone that complains but still goes out every month and buys a shity title is just drinking the Kool-Aid they're selling. Stop buying. Scare the piss out of the company and then you'll see change.
