San Diego – Comic-Con International: San Diego (Comic-Con), the largest comics convention of its kind in the world, today announced it will be staying in San Diego for the foreseeable future.

Comic-Con reached a self-imposed attendance limit at the San Diego Convention Center (SDCC) in 2007 and has had to cap attendance at approximately 125,000 people each year since. In looking at ways to better accommodate the growing demand from attendees and exhibitors, the nonprofit organization considered proposals for a move to larger facilities in Los Angeles or Anaheim after the expiration of its SDCC lease in 2012. This decision keeps Comic-Con in San Diego through 2015.

“We are grateful for the tireless efforts all three cities put into to their proposals,” said David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s director of marketing and public relations. “In the end, we feel this decision is the best for all those who attend Comic-Con and for the organization itself. We are happy that the community has worked with us to ensure that we remain here.”

Comic-Con was first held in 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel, where it attracted 300 people. As the event grew, subsequent homes included the downtown El Cortez Hotel in the 1970s and the San Diego Convention and Performing Arts Center in the 1980s. Comic-Con moved to the then newly built SDCC in 1991. Comic-Con celebrated its 41st year in 2010.

The San Diego Convention Center Corporation has scheduled a press conference for Friday, October 1 at 11:45 a.m. at Lobby E of the convention center.

they should just call it movie con now and move all the comic stuff somewhere else so those fans can enjoy the con without all the band wagoners

I'm glad that it's in San Diego: half of the attraction of Comic Con IS San Diego. The night live is close, safe and lively, the women are hot :), there are a number of theaters near by for screenings, and the list goes on.

I'm sorry, I grew up in Anaheim, and while it's closer, it's borderling ghetto. With Downtown LA, it's cleaning up, but if you thought traffic was bad in San Diego...

In the end, it doesn't matter if it's bigger, Comic Con by nature NOW is gonna be messy no matter what. If it went to Anaheim, it'll get only bigger where it'll have to move again.

This is good news. It's become a tradition, I would have hated to see it change.

Good. I can still drive there for next year's event! I just wish they would get back to limiting it to Comic Book stuff. Pretty much any movie or show promotes there now. :-(

I know one of the higher-ups on the Comic-Con staff,so I know a lot of inside info about the goings-on behind the scenes. Trust me when I tell you this was not an easy decision. The hold-up was mainly a couple San Diego hotels balking at entering an agreement with the Con in regards room rates.Plus,90% of the Con staff are local, and did not want to deal with having to commute to Anaheim or LA if a move WAS made. Disney was a big backer of the Anaheim push, particularly after they acquired Marvel...I'd say more, but I may have said too much already...

Man, I was hoping it was going to come to Anaheim or Los Angeles. I'm a 15 minute drive from Anaheim, and 45 minute (depending on traffic) drive from Los Angeles.
