After a strong start at the North American box office with a Thursday night haul of $18.6 million, Deadpool 2 went on to score $53.5 million on Friday. That means the sequel has now topped IT's record for having the highest opening day of all-time for an R-Rated movie; that made $50.4 million last year. Now, three-day estimates are pointing to the sequel ending the weekend with $132+ million.
Why is that important? Well, the first instalment of the franchise - which was released a little over two years ago - debuted with $132.4 million and as things currently stand, there's a very good chance the follow-up will end up beating it. That very much depends on how things pan out today, though.
As you might expect, Deadpool 2 has now managed to dethrone Avengers: Infinity War to take the #1 spot at the domestic box office. The Marvel Studios movie is eyeing $28 million - $30 million this weekend and it should pass $1.8 billion worldwide by close of business on Sunday. We're still waiting for the Merc with the Mouth's international numbers to come in so be sure to stay tuned for updates.
With Solo: A Star Wars Story set to be released next week, the sequel will obviously have to act fast.
