DEADPOOL 2: Rob Liefeld Confirms Brad Pitt Very Nearly Played Cable In Place Of Josh Brolin

Comic book writer and artist Rob Liefeld has revealed that Brad Pitt (Bullet Train) came close to portraying Cable in Deadpool 2, a role which instead went to Josh Brolin. Find more details here...

There have been rumblings for years that Brad Pitt was eyed to play Cable in Deadpool 2, though the extent of the actor's role in the sequel was as the mutant Vanisher. The X-Force member had just a few seconds of screentime, with his face exposed only when he was electrocuted to death.

Josh Brolin ended up taking on the role of the time-traveller, but in an interview with ComicBook.com, the Merc with Mouth's co-creator Rob Liefeld confirmed the rumours about Pitt were true.

"I know for 100% fact that was true," the comic book writer and artist revealed. "They did previews, and David Leitch had a very special relationship doing stunt work with [Pitt]. What people don't know is that was very early on. So when they knew they weren't going in that direction, they went down several others."

According to Liefeld, Brolin's wife convinced him to audition for the role, though the actor has since admitted he struggled to bring the character to life on screen.

"Deadpool was hard. Even though it was funny, it was harder," Brolin said back in 2020. "That was more of a business transaction, it was more, 'We need to make this like this,' which I didn’t feel that way with Avengers."

"With those directors, they would constantly go back and reference Scarface or Dog Day Afternoon. Whether or not it was a manipulation, they knew what to throw out there to bring it back into something inspired."

In Deadpool 2, Cable is portrayed as a time-travelling soldier who, just like in the comics, wields a cybernetic arm and advanced weaponry. Born Nathan Summers, he comes from a dystopian future and seeks to prevent a tragedy that drives him to alter the past.

The mutant's main target is a young mutant named Russell "Firefist" Collins, who possesses fiery powers and poses a threat to Cable's future. Initially clashing with Deadpool, their motives gradually align as they work together to protect the young mutant from an even more formidable adversary in Juggernaut.

Cable isn't expected to appear in Deadpool 3, though we anticipate his actions in the 2017 sequel being referenced in some way, particularly after Wade Wilson stole his time-travelling device. If nothing else, that should be a key plot point in the upcoming threequel.

Brolin has reprised the role of Thanos in What If...? and it would be shocking if he doesn't return to the Marvel Universe in one way or another down the line.

Josh Brolin pulled off Cable pretty well, I just don't think Brad Pitt could have,he just hasn't got that look.

Brad Pitt should play Jean Grey in the MCU, that much is obvious.

@Batmangina - You mean Rogue. Because he doesn't want any non-celeb fans to touch him.

Didn't like DP2, Cable was fine, but he felt like he was under written, I hope they don't repeat what they did with cAble with wolverine in dp3.

@Ha1frican - wasn't it Reynolds who made the cameo happen though? Although I could see Pitt agree to it as old pal Leitch was directing it

@Vigor - I bought Deadpool's first appearance when it was published in 1990. I was in the 8th grade.

I was attempting a joke about the idea that folks would need a reminder of who Brad Pitt is, which clearly went over really well.

I'm still hoping we get to see Brolin return in Deadpool 3, albeit as Stryfe instead of Cable

Thank God he was cast as a invisible guy in the end because I really didn't feel like seeing him as Cable.

@Doomsday8888 - he should do multiple man. so, he can act in television, broadways, film, theater, blockbuster films and still be able to get some. Who doesn't more of BP?

I mean , didn’t we have official concept art of him as Cable?.

I think Brolin did well in the role even though I felt Cable was kinda one note as a character (though still alright).

Anyway , I found DP 2 still enjoyable though 1 was still better imo.

Ever since seeing Brad Pitt in Troy, I have no qualms about any role he plays
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 12/6/2023, 2:48 PM
@Vigor - It was the three-picture run of A River Runs Through It, Kalifornia, and True Romance that did it for me. He played a grounded protagonist, and unhinged maniac, and a lovable stoner dipshit, disappearing into all three roles. It's a shame he's got those matinee idol good looks, because he could've been one of his generation's greatest character actors.

Brolin was actually pretty good as Cable IMO. I think the casting worked out nicely. Cable was always the straight man to Deadpool's comedic hijinks.

Josh Brolin went above and beyond the call of duty as Thanos AND he was great as Cable!
The only actor that i can name who played two comic book character with so much gravitas is Chris Evans as Captain America and Johnny Storm (Three if you count the evil Ex in Scott Pilgrim).

Brolin was really good.

Wait, are Deadpool 2 and Looper the same plot?

And I would cast Brad Pitt as Banshee, but make him use his accent from Snatch.

He will probably play a variant of Cable in DP3. I do hope they steer clear of DP2. That film doesn't work well for me. I think it over-compensated.
