The marketing for Deadpool has been awesome so far! Unlike other comic book movies the type of character Deadpool is lends itself to the creative strategies in marketing that I think Fox is capturing very well. The big question is does the movie capture it the same way? Well from the commercials and couple trailers we've seen so far, while the movie looks like it's going to be funny, it doesn't look like it's going to be way out there like how the marketing presents it or like how the spirit of the character should be.
Fox is finally taking advantage of an underrated property that for many years was spent in limbo because executives didn't understand the character enough until that cgi footage leaked and got a rave response a couple years back. As we all know all executives understand is money and thats ok to digree because they have to cater to stock holders but it only goes to show me that if they had KNOWN the popularity of Deadpool, had they went to these many comic cons and seen the cosplay done with this character and read the material, that things would have sped up a lot quicker getting him out there. It amazes me now though, to their credit, how the marketing gets it. It's the exact thing that we want from the character and it lends its to so many creative ways to put Deadpool on stage to entertain us. Now does the movie do this? It remains to be seen of course but I think we as fans really need to see a scene from the movie that really hits the bullseye and gets it like the marketing does. So far I don't think we've seen it. Now I'll still be in line to see the movie no matter what and will remain optimistic but how many time have we experienced great marketing on a movie to sell it to the audience only to be disappointed by the actual product? Hopefully that is not this.
The last thing we want is Ryan Reynolds just quipping his way through the movie. Then this would just be Green Lantern all over again.
