Ryan Reynolds broke the internet when he dropped a video announcing that Deadpool 3 will feature the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The movie is expected to take place in Fox's X-Men Universe, though we anticipate the Merc with the Mouth ultimately finding his way into the MCU.
Needless to say, it can't have been easy bringing Jackman back into the fold, particularly after 2017's Logan. However, convincing his old X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star to wield those claws again wasn't the only hurdle Reynolds faced.
"It’s not like adding Hugh Jackman to a movie like this is a hard sell. It’s an immediate and emphatic, unqualified yes," he tells Collider. "It’s a lot of moving parts and Fox and X-Men and all that kind of stuff that Marvel needs to sort through. A lot of red tape in order to make that happen. And they did it."
"And I’m really grateful that they did it, because for me, working with Hugh is a dream come true. But working with Logan and having Logan and Wade together in a movie is beyond any dream I would ever be audacious enough to have. So I’m really, really super f***ing excited to do this film."
Reynolds went on to reveal that he first met with Marvel Studios President three or four years ago when Disney acquired Fox. While they discussed a Deadpool/Wolverine movie, he says that "was not possible at the time," but Jackman's insistence he play Wolverine again played a big role in making this long-awaited team-up a reality.
"Hugh just happened to call at that perfect moment and express that he’d be interested in coming back and doing this one more time. And the contents of that conversation...I’ll let Hugh answer that on his own. But he expressed interest in coming back, and then it was my job to take that to Kevin Feige one more time and sell it."
When the untitled Deadpool threequel was being made at Fox, Reynolds said the movie would be a "road trip...Rashomon style." It's been through a few different writers since then and moved under the purview of Marvel Studios, and the expectation now is that Logan and Wade Wilson might be taking a journey through the Multiverse!
Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on November 8, 2024.
