BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Will Not Receive A Sequel, Disney May Explore Spinoff Or Prequel

While it seemed pretty obvious, Disney's Sean Bailey has confirmed that Beauty and the Beast will not receive a sequel, though the door isn't closed to a possible spinoff or prequel down the line.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast remake is preparing for its second round in theatres after a monstrous opening weekend. Though the original 1991 film never had a sequel that took place after the events of the story, there have been questions from some as to whether the live-action film could have one, especially considering that Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book will be getting a follow-up despite its deviation from the animated film's ending.

However, according to Deadline, Disney may have learned a lesson from the underperformance of last year's Alice Thorugh The Looking Glass, opting to not try and force a sequel, though Sean Bailey (president of Motion Picture Production at Walt Disney Studios) has said that the studio plans to explore scenarios for a future prequel or spinoff.

There are currently no plans for a sequel and the studio — perhaps with Alice Through The Looking Glass as a reminder — won’t try to force one. It will explore possible spinoff and prequel scenarios, Bailey said.

In other related news, the remake has now managed to pull in a whopping $428 million at the global box office (according to The Wrap), and will likely pass $500 million by the end of the week, which puts the film past the combined totals of the original animated classic ($425 million between 1991 and the subsequent IMAX and 3D re-releases in 2002 and 2012 respectively). Star Josh Gad (LeFou) also revealed that he tried to include an Easter Egg related to Disney's Frozen, though it didn't make the cut (you can read more about that here).

Have you seen Beauty and the Beast yet? Would you want to see a spinoff or prequel? Let us know what you thoughts in the comments!

@MasterMix - Well that wasn't a sequel it was a "during the time Belle was stuck in the castle and before the fight with Gaston" so it is an "inbetweener".

Does there really need to be a spinoff? Disney has so many things they could adapt or something, I dont think a spinoff is really needed. And thats not diminishing disney, they have so much more they could invest their money and time in, and imo a spinoff is not one of them

@hufflepuff69 - i agree. Don't like them taking my childhood classics and remaking them. Need more original movies like Zootopia and Moana, both which I really enjoyed

The main problem I have with the disneyfied version of The Beauty and the Beast is that the Beast is actually handsome. There's nothing scary or ugly about him.
Look at Jean Marais in the 1946 movie and tell me you wouldn't freak out like Belle does:

How is a forced prequel any better than a forced sequel?

I'm not saying to make sequel, they are plenty busy adapting all these animated movies, but to say Alice Through the Looking Glass is any kind of proof that sequels won't work or aren't wanted is ridiculous. A) Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland was a sequel, and B) Alive Through the Looking Glass was a terrible movie that was ripped apart by critics and was a sequel to a movie that wasn't really beloved or all that fondly remembered.

Well at this point Disney can do whatever they want...it will make money!

If they made a good sequel to Beauty and the Beast then it would make a ton of money, but in reality I think me and most of the audience look at Mulan, Aladdin, The Lion King, Dumbo, etc as the sequels to this movie.

That OTHER Beast...King Kong is looking like it may not get a sequel. With a 18 5 million dollar prodction budget and probably 100 million marketing, it needs to get to at least 350 million to be a respectable flop. They made a mistake opening the film this close to Beauty and the Beast.

@Forthas - A shame since Kong is the most loveable B-movie I've seen in a while.
TheUnworthyThor

@Forthas - I'm was saying it for a like a year, the studios were being idiots, March 2017 was too full, some movies were going to get tremendously hurt by it, and wow I don't believe it, so crazy? It actually happened. And this was after two big movies dropped out of March.
Forthas
Forthas - 3/23/2017, 8:19 AM
@CharlyZarkov - I know...I really was looking forward to the Monsterverse...which could still happen. But I don't think it will be the tentpole it had the potential to be.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 3/23/2017, 8:20 AM
@Forthas - Oh but it will be getting a sequel in Godzilla vs Kong and that will help determine the future of more "solo" movies.
