Following a billion-dollar box office run, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital HD release dates and special features for The Lion King!

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced that Jon Favreau's The Lion King will arrive on Digital HD on October 11 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on October 22. 

The live-action remake of the 1994 animated classic of the same name ended its thunderous box office run as the second-highest grossing film of the year and the seventh-highest grossing film of all-time with $1.616 billion ($533.9M domestic; $1.083B foreign) globally. It's also the highest-grossing Disney live-action remake ever and the fourth-highest Disney film of all-time.

The home video release will contain a ton of exclusive special features, including extensive behind-the-scenes documentaries as well as special looks at the musical numbers. Plus, there's also an audio commentary from the director.

(Sept. 16, 2019) — Be prepared: Disney’s “The Lion King,” the worldwide phenomenon that brought the Pride Lands’ iconic characters to life in a whole new way, arrives on Digital in HD and 4K Ultra HD™ and Movies Anywhere Oct.11 and physically on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™ and DVD Oct. 22. Directed by Jon Favreau, the summer blockbuster, which reigned supreme with audiences worldwide — earning over $1 billion at the global box office and an A CinemaScore — journeys home with all-new bonus features, music videos and an exclusive extra for Digital consumers.

In-home audiences will feel the love as they trek behind the scenes and to the African savanna through “The Journey to ‘The Lion King,’” a three-part documentary that explores the film’s creation. It features visits to the Playa Vista production facility where talent, including Donald Glover (voice of Simba) honor and elevate the animated classic’s iconic music; discussions with Favreau and team who used cutting-edge technology to create photorealistic animals and environments; and filmmaker and cast reflections on the timeless tale that has moved generations. Extras also include “More to Be Scene,” layer-by-layer progressions of some of the film’s most iconic moments; lyric video for “Never Too Late” by Elton John and music video for “Spirit” by Beyoncé; sing-alongs to the film’s unforgettable songs; and a feature on the “Protect the Pride” campaign, which focuses on protecting and revitalizing the lion population.

Consumers who pre-purchase “The Lion King” digitally will gain access to “Perfecting the Pride,” a feature highlighting the filmmakers’ research trip to Africa.

The digital version includes an extra that playfully conveys the importance of the dung beetle both in the film and the African savanna.

In “The Lion King,” pioneering filmmaking techniques bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother — and former heir to the throne — has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. Still haven't seen this and haven't met a single person who has

Having just seen Aladdin tho, I am perplexed by how just bland these ones have looked. I haven't seen all of them, but both Aladdin and Dumbo have this extremely drab, plastic feel to them that loses all the visual flare, and Aladdin is an even bigger offender because so much of it's appeal is based on songs, stuants and dancing

None of them so far have been 'bad' from what I've seen, but what confused me is why Disney would take their biggest animated movies and adapt them in a style that *has no style* when the opportunities are there to make these even crazier looking than the originals

Jungle Book remains the only one I see myself revisiting

The Lion King is my favorite movie of all time, while I agree there’s something about it being photoreal that does take away from the emotion of certain scenes I personally loved it and will be picking this up day one for sure
