TOY STORY 4 Tracking Towards Third Best Opening For An Animated Film With $123M-Plus Weekend

Toy Story 4 had a Friday opening of $47.39 million (with Thursday previews), leading to updated box office projections around $123 million for the opening weekend - lower than initial industry estimates.

Opening night numbers for Toy Story 4 are in and Deadline is now projecting the latest Pixar film to bring in around $123.7 million for its opening weekend. The new projection is well below initial industry estimates that ranged anywhere between $140-$200 million.

Forbes reports that Toy Story 4 took in $47.39 million on Friday, which includes the $12 million in Thursday previews. Comparitively, Toy Story 3 opened to $41 million in 2010, while the more recent Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 had opening day (plus Thursday previews) hauls of $56 million and $71 million, respectively.

If these updated projections hold true, Toy Story 4 is looking at the third-best opening for animated film, behind Incredibles 2 ($182.6M) and Finding Dory ($135M).  It would be ahead of Toy Story 3 ($110.3M), however. The good news is that all three of these films went on to gross more than $400 million domestically and topped $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Toy Story 4 doesn't appear to be setting any records for Disney and while it may come in lower than projected, it's hard to scoff at a potential billion dollar film.

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.

Toy Story 4 is now in theaters. Have you seen it yet?

This film was beautiful. As perfect an ending as 3 had, this found an angle and make it work, and in many ways felt like Endgame for Toy Story in terms of callbacks and closure.

Child’s Play was better than it had any right to be. Really fun movie.

I liked it, but didn't love it. Felt Toy Story 3 should've been the last one, but this was a decent time at the movies.

Great movie never thought a romance between two toys would be better than 90% of movie romances

Honestly, I have to agree with Tim Allen and say I didn't like the ending.

I also thought Toy Story 3 was much better. And in many ways 3 worked better as a conclusion.

Disney is making all the money this Summer.
Pre-sales compared to Incredibles 2 were indicating a $110M opening and I think that's the number Disney & others should have stuck with for their predictions. Toy Story 4 never had the demand for a I2-level opening and a franchise record is an achievement, especially this Summer. If any film is going to flirt with Incredibles' record, that will be Frozen 2.

I loved it. Toy Story is my #2 movie of all time, I was born in ‘93 and grew up with that on VHS and it’s been a huge part of my love of movies ever since. I personally though it was a great final chapter, although the 3rd one had the great finality to it this was a great epilogue and felt like a great way to end the journey that began all those years ago. Here’s hoping my #1 movie Lion King lives up to being good bc this year has been amazing so far and it come a Out 2 days before my birthday

Not getting my money. Toy Story 3 ended the story just fine and greedy Disney continues to drain the well.

@blitzkreg - 3 was all about letting go, 4 was acceptance. It was much more fitting conclusion.

@DTor91 - Not really. Woody seems to abandon what he learned in Toy Story 3 and chooses to pursue a relationship that wasn't really established in the original films at all.

I'm shocked. Even Disney had this at $140+ and they are generally very conservative with their estimates.

Frozen 2 might flirt with a 200 million opening. Toy Story 4 is just the opening act.
