Opening night numbers for
Toy Story 4 are in and Deadline is now projecting the latest Pixar film to bring in around $123.7 million for its opening weekend. The new projection is well below initial industry estimates that ranged anywhere between $140-$200 million.
Forbes
reports that
Toy Story 4 took in $47.39 million on Friday, which includes the $12 million in Thursday previews. Comparitively,
Toy Story 3 opened to $41 million in 2010, while the more recent
Finding Dory and
Incredibles 2 had opening day (plus Thursday previews) hauls of $56 million and $71 million, respectively.
If these updated projections hold true, Toy Story 4 is looking at the third-best opening for animated film, behind
Incredibles 2 ($182.6M) and
Finding Dory ($135M). It would be ahead of
Toy Story 3 ($110.3M), however. The good news is that all three of these films went on to gross more than $400 million domestically and topped $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Toy Story 4 doesn't appear to be setting any records for Disney and while it may come in lower than projected, it's hard to scoff at a potential billion dollar film.
Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.
