ETERNALS Star Kumail Nanjiani Casts Doubt On Sequel Plans: "I Don't Think Patton Was Right"

Patton Oswalt appeared to confirm that a sequel to Eternals was officially in development during a recent interview, but Kingo actor Kumail Nanjiani believes his costar must have been mistaken...

Back in August, Eternals actor Patton Oswalt (Pip the Troll) appeared to let slip that a sequel was in the works with director Chloé Zhao set to return.

"They have announced there's going to be an Eternals sequel, Chloe Zhao is going to direct it. So hopefully there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip," he told Al Rocker while being interviewed for The Today Show.

Marvel Studios never made any such announcement, so while Oswalt's comments were widely circulated, many believed the Sandman actor must have been misinformed. Now, an update from his Eternals costar Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo) would seem to confirm as much.

“I have no idea. I don’t think Patton was right," Nanjiani explained to The Playlist when asked about the potential sequel. "I think that there was a hoax website – one of those where it’s like one letter off from the real one. They tweeted it, and it spread around and I think that’s what Patton saw. I honestly don’t know anything. I would love for Kingo to come back. I love playing that character…That one’s very fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love? You’re just in a good mood the entire time.”

MCU sequels are a regular occurrence, of course, but Eternals is the only Marvel Studios movie to drop to "rotten" status on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and the divisive superhero epic finished up its U.S. run with a disappointing $164.9 million, giving it the lowest domestic haul of any MCU-set movie aside from 2008's The Incredible Hulk ($134M).

The movie did perform much better overseas (its global cume passed $400 million mark), but it's generally assumed that a mediocre BO performance and critical reception would influence Disney's decision when it came to potentially fast-tracking a follow-up.

A direct sequel may never materialize, but we are certain to see at least some of the immortal heroes in The MCU again down the line.

They'd be smarter to use the characters in other franchises rather than make an Eternals 2.

This is actually a franchise that could warrant some Disney+ content. One-offs or something similar showing the various members throughout history.

This movie could have been so much better had it been about them in the past vs the present deviants storyline.

@mountainman - absolutely. First, this property would have been much better served as a show with its 10 characters to introduce. Second it should have really leaned into the period piece element of the character. They’ve existed across ALL of human civilization. So much potential and possibilities. Why stick them in boring modern day? Such a waste imo.

@MrDandy - The best parts of the movie occurred in the past. How do you feature Babylon and spend such little time there?

@mountainman - Because it's the past and there is no present day risk associated with it. It ends up as window dressing.

I wouldnt cry if this franchise just ended as a one off. Yeah the film was a misfire that they could recover from, but for me the real problem is that none of the characters hooked me. They were all sort of flat and forgettable.

I don’t really care about any of these robots and I really don’t care if any of them show up again.

That may be the most damning part of Eternals. But these roles have some good actors so maybe they could still make something of the franchise…. I’m just not eagerly awaiting a righting of the ship.

@MrDandy - Ikarus was interesting to an extent. Kingo, Druig and Makkari next. But yeah, nobody will miss these drab robots.

@MrDandy - Agreed, that was exactly how I felt after watching it. I couldn't care about a single character because we can't spend enough time with each of them.

The only positive I can find in that movie is that they nailed what superspeed should look like on screen.
