5 ways that Smalllville is similar to Raimi's Spider-Man

I will get hate for this, but it is something I have noticed about Raimi's first Spider-Man movie, and the Show Smallville.

Lets just get this out of the way, I am not a hater. I like Smallville, still on season five and have been too busy to watch more. I love Raimi Spider-Man How can I not? I grew up with it. However I have noticed some people on this site trying to say that TASM is going to be more like Smallville, and be angsty and bad. However, if we go all the way back to 2002 when the first Spider-Man movie came out, you will see more similarites with The Show Smallville than you think.

1. School Loser: Peter and Clark are both at the beginning of there respective stories, considered losers. They mumble around pretty girls and are clumsy and are over all dorks.

2. Love interest dating the bully: Flash Thompson and Whitney Fordman are very similar characters. They both torture the Protagonist and date the girl he is madly in love with. Both Lana and MJ have known Clark and Peter since they were kids, and have kind of been friends, and they have had lifetime crushes on them.

3. Substitute Parents and Wise Father figure: Clark may have "Parents, but they are only adoptive Parents who found him when his ship crashed in Kansas. Peter has his Aunt and Uncle who raised him after his parents died in a car crash. Both Jonathan Kent and Uncle Ben are very important men in there respective franchises. They both make the characters the men and heroes they will soon become.

4. Melodramatic tone: As much as people want to deny it, and say that that is what TASM is doing, well, rewatch the films. Raimi Spider-Man tended to be over the top emotionally with characters acting very melodramatically for the sake of Drama. If Tobey's crying isn't melodramatic then I don't know what is. Smallville has done the same thing. Both could be considered soap opera's with Superpowers.

5. Best friend of the Hero and His Manipulative villainous Dad: While i believe that Smallville pulled it off better, the relationship between Harry and Norman, and the relationship between Lex and Lionel are very similar. Both of the fathers are disappointed that there sons are not "good enough" In Normans case it is the fact that Harry is not smart or driven enough. Lionels case is that Lex isn't ruthless or driven enough.

While these similarities could be chalked up to Superhero stereotypes, it is interesting that Smallville premeiered in 2001 and Spidey Premiered in 2002. Could there have been people working on Spider-Man and Smallville at the same time. We do know that Miles Millar, who helped create Smallville helped in writing the story for Spider-Man 2. Is this mere coincidence? Or is there something deeper, tell me what you think!

Well observed, although Spider-Man clearly did it well, whereas Smallville [frick]ed up everything by the end.

I grew up on the Spider-Man films, and I can't wait for The Amazing Spider-Man, simply because I'll finally get to watch a Spider-Man film in which Tobey Maguire doesn't start to cry like a [frick]ing 30 year old baby.

Smallville was incredible. They did Lex and his father/Clark and Lex/Clark and Lois better than anyone else has ever done or ever will. I like Raimi's Spidey movies, they were entertaining and even gritty at times. And to the haters: Both franchises were successful.

@ACira look man Tobey was a great actor (apart from spiderman 1) im sure he didnt want to go with the crying scenes in the Spider-man films but still he got paid for it and thats what the director WANTED him to do, give him a little respect...Tobey Maguire was great as spiderman, if it wasnt for him, where would our spiderman memories come from?

Recheck your use of there vs. their.

They both did well from the onset and helped usher in this superhero era we're enjoying. Over time, both series had their issues. As we've seen in other franchises, this isn't unusual.

Smallville isn't AWFUL. In fact, many of the dynamics are very well done. There was just a lot of cheese to it as some times. I am @ season 7 or 8 (I can't remember and too busy to watch). The first couple seasons took some time to get off the ground soared for a little while and then kinda floundered around season 7&8 (partly why I'm not making time to watch them). Lex and Lionel are far more interesting than Clark and his whining over Lana and her cussing about him.

Spider-Man is similar in it's make-up, but I think that is b/c they are similar characters and it is the telling of their origin story. Overall, good comparison though and interesting thought.

Smallville was good for season 1-4, some of 5-7, 8 was bad, 9 was good and 10 missed a gold moment but had 2 really good episodes.

Smallville was a great show, until it changes its characters from likeable to simply annoying (Lana, Chloe, and even Martha with the Red Queen thing), perhaps due to its long run. Yeah, I assume that the writers just had no enough idea to fill in such many episodes they have to "develop" the characters in such a great measure they just transform into very annoying characters.

Anyway, season 1-6/7 was pretty great, but season 8 was a mess. (Sam Witwer is a great actor, but his Doomsday was a complete mess.) By the time season 9 (or 8, actually) hit, I started to see it more like an Elseworld story; an alternate take on Superman's life, no longer just a story about Clark Kent's journey to becoming Superman. And, guess what, I successfully enjoyed it with such perspective, especially with the appearance of Checkmate, JSA, et cetera. It's still quite a letdown, but...well.

Oh, anyway, great write-up. Those things may just be due to superheroes' typicality, though, and Superman and Spider-Man are both quite similar generally, anyway (there's an article that details it, with both heroes' alter ego working as reporters, et cetera); but in observing the details and bringing up those particular points, good job.

I cant believe people still complain about the crying in Spider-Man. its not like he cried over everything, he cried at acceptable times. Jis father figure was murdered, he punched the girl he loves because he lost control...yeah I guess people on this site are so manly that these things wouldnt bother you emotionally, right.

I'm actually a fan of smallville, it was fun an entertaining to watch and the parts it took from the comic books i really enjoyed, the effects were great in general alot of the story was well written and it served as a good stepping stone for future comic book ventures.
