Batman Reboot Ideas

Batman Reboot Ideas

With Nolan's epic trilogy coming to a close this summer, here is my opinion on how a reboot 6-10 years down the road should go.

Before I start this off, many people may be saying to themselves "Blasphmy, no one should try to even try Batman after Nolan" I understand your qualms, but hear me out. Batman has the problem of either being too campy, or being "grounded and realistic" It seems that there can not be a middle ground in the producers eyes. As much as I Burton's Batman films were influenced by Frank Miller, by giving us a less camp, more serious version of the character, it was still pretty Campy, especially Batman Returns. (Even the title is kinda cheesy. Where did he go? The Supermarket? Then we had Shumacher's films, which were just as campy as the 60's version. I mean a Bat credit card, really? However, a middle ground can be found. It has been done before, in both the Comics, and the Animated series. Live action is tricky though, you have to make people believe these things can happen in real life. It is especially difficult when you have a character that has no powers, therefore suspension of disbelief because the main character has powers is out of the question.

I think however, that a movie in similar tone to Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, could work. Introducing elements similar to the comics, but still making people believe this can happen. Here is my take on several elements that need to be included in a reboot.

1. NO ORIGIN STORY! We have had 2 movies already that have given us the origin story of Batman, we do not need another, although a new interpretation on it would be interesting, i think a simple flash back towards the middle of the movie about his parents being killed or working it into the dialogue could work.

2. Batman should have been active for a while! Maybe 2 or three years, cleaning up crime in Gotham. It is then we will introduce Super-Villains.

3. Set up villains in previous movies then pay them off later on. Jack Napeir could be a small time crook in the first or something as the red hood, and then Batman will create Joker and that can be used in a 3rd film. This way the universe of the movie feels bigger, and can create more tragic villains. Knowing someone is a good guy for 2 or so movies then he becomes evil in a third film, like Two-Face would be cool.

4. DO NOT REUSE VILLAINS! Of course we need the Joker for any Batman franchise to work, they are Yin and Yang, Batman needs his archenemy. Nolan (and God Bless the man) has only used 2 unused film villains in his movies. We had Seen Joker, Two-Face, Bane, and Catwoman all in the Burton/Shumacher films. We need more variety, or at least I do. To some extent I would say that Catwoman could be used again... but as more of an Anto-Hero/Love Interest. We need villains like Killer Croc, or Deadshot. I will make a Fanfic article later and propose the trilogy further and describe villains there.

5. Supernatural Elements and Comic correct costume does not equal cheesy. I can not stress this enough. I good enough filmmaker will be able to create elements like this and make it look good regardless of how "unrealistic" it maybe. Iron Man and his tech is extremely unrealistic, but we believe it because the film-making is so good. Loki's helmet is crazy, but we don't question it because we are focused on the character not the costume.

6. This one goes along with number 5, but needs its own section: Batmans costume. While Nolan did a very good job convincing me that the bat suit was realistic, i feel a reboot could go classic. Hear me out, Batman could wear a type of Kevlar underneath the fabric costume and pull it off. By wearing something that is so obviously Kevlar, criminals know how he survives shots. However using kevlar secretively can convince a bad guy that you are invincible, that is scary. Like in V For Vendetta when he pulled out the metal armor from underneath his costume. It made him look invincible so the people shooting at him were confused as hell. Also, it could give the illusion of extra muscles, making him look bigger than he actually is.

7. Franchise Franchise Franchise. While this is exactly why the 90's Batman movies got increasingly worse in the hands of capable directors who understand the source material, we will not have this problem. Making more movies can cause a decrease in quality in order to get them out on time, however, Treated correctly a franchise could very well cover multiple Robins, and a Dark Knight Returns film.

These are just a few ideas. When I feel more awake i will do a fancast, story ideas and director ideas. Tell me what you think. I know, it is a shitty article, but hey, could work. If you believe I need to expand on my ideas, tell me in the comment section below, i will gladly explain it too you, or edit the article to make it clear.

PEACE BE WITH YOU CBM! NUFF SAID.

A 40s–set noir Batman would be cool. But Warner Bros. seems to have their eyes set on a attempting a Cinematic Universe (for the sake of Justice League). And given that, the Wayne Family tragedy should be touched up upon (and recommend at the opening of the movie). A solid base for a series of films requires a mild look at his "becoming". Marvel has given solid origins for all their heroes— and without wasting time with it (getting to the villain conflict). So, I agree with some of your points ("do not reuse villains"). Oh yeah, and set it in the near, near future (2017-ish). imo.

I'd like to see Deadshot or Firefly in the reboot...and I do like the 40's idea.

I dig the 40s idea. that hardboiled Bogart-Cagney-Welles character like film noir detective. that was Miller's direction for the Batman comics and made it work. the Creator(Bob Kane) was from that era and am sure it helped define his vision.
Wouldnt it make a great parallel movie with the reboot and I envision Miller or Rodriguez directing it Sin City style.

@BattlinMurdock That could actually be epic.

I for one think there should be an origin story. You go through his first year returning to Gotham as Batman and part of his childhood. You can set up SOOOOO amny villains by doing this. Granted, the origin story should be different than in the past. As in, you could set up Hush in Bruce's childhood.

Maybe use other DC films to hint at his exsistance, but reveal him in a JL film and go from there.

@Preacherfanatic7: Before I read this, I've just got to say something: "6-10 years"?!?! Why start with "6"?!?! What a weird number... LOL

@Preacherfanatic7: I agree with all of your points, except 1 (perhaps 2, not sure how to count it). Bane has never been seen in a Batman film. We should NEVER consider that monstrosity of a mindles thug they called "Bane" in "Batman & Robin." Without seeing the film, I can already say that the Bane of "The Dark Knight Rises" is a far better representative. And I think we've seen enough from Catwoman. I'm positive that I speak only for me, but I'm not a fan of her.

@BattlinMurdock: I love the idea of a 40's-era Batman film. The possibilities are limitless. Also, I've never thought of DD as Marvel's Batman. I thought that title belonged to Iron Man.

@AcidicHeart:I agree, to a degree, with all of your points. The only exceptions would be the last 3. I'm not a fan of crossovers. The fact that "The Avengers" worked so well is amazing, as all signs point to a movie like that to fail. Arkham City proved to me (a longtime "Robin-on-film" protester) that Robin can be done properly on film. And Batgirl should never be a "yes." Especially if we aren't going to have a Robin.

I have to disagree with this part, directors have very different styles. While a director may be good that doesn't mean they can handle certain aspects well, there are many greater director's than Bay but he is THE action guy.

Iron Man works not because it looks good but because it looks real. When you see all those flaps and vents you understand how he flies and that form follows function. Loki and co work because of the different civilization, even then Loki is not even comic accurate at all.

When you look at Batman in Nolans films you can see why he would wear the suit for protection. The same applies to Cap in TFA but in the Avengers however he is just wearing an updated USO outfit.

I understand explaining the fabric has protective stuff underneath but can you imagine a comic accurate Dick Grayson Robin costume?

A trilogy franchise isn't enough. Either a six film franchise or a live action tv show would give it enough attention. I am doing fansites on both options.
The TV show has the ability to move from villian to villian each week. Just as Batman gets a beat on the current villian and maybe even put him back into Arkham, another villian emerges for a nice cliff hanger.
The same could happen for the movies. The main super villian could be briefly aided by a second super villian and a minor villian. (Deadshot, Mad Hatter, Zsasz, etc) The audience will get a nice appetizer of the second villian which will take over for the next film. Plus you can have watch Dent slowly turn to Two Face, Barbara Gordon become Batgirl then Oracle in due time, you can witness the relationship of Batman and Catwoman span for the entirety of the franchise. You could also see Ra's and Tailia over the course of the franchise really play mind games on Bruce. So I do agree with the concept of villians spilling over to the next film.
