In 1975's 1st Issue Special #9, Martin Pasko and Walt Simonson crafted a one-off tale starring DC's greatest super-sorcerer and JSA founder, Kent Nelson, alias Doctor Fate. The story would later be published again in the 1984 reprint mini-series "The Immortal Doctor Fate".
The story sees Kent face off with Khalis, a mad ancient Egyptian priest who returns to life as a living mummy in order to use Fate's amulet to remake the world for his master, Anubis, the Egyptian god of the underworld.
Having just picked up and read the first issue of the reprint series (which really would've been fine as a one-shot), I thought that this short story would've been a nice addition to the short-lived "DC Showcase" animated shorts. Plus, it also gives us the good doctor's origin story in a way that fits the overall narrative. So with that, I've got this fancast all set up:
-Art/animation style based on Walt Simonson's, with elements of the art used in the short for the Spectre.
-Voice direction by Andrea Romano.
-Script adaptation by, who else, Martin Pasko (who wrote several scripts for Batman: The Animated Series)
And now, our voice cast:
Timothy Dalton as the voice of Doctor Fate/Kent Nelson
I thought that this former James Bond had a good voice befitting a man conflicted by the god within him, and I think it's time Dalton had a decent role in a comic book-based production, be it film or television.
Stana Katic as the voice of Inza Nelson
Katic now has some experience with comic book characters, having lent her voice to Talia Al Ghul in the video game Batman: Arkham City. I think she would have a great voice for the equally conflicted Mrs. Kent Nelson, worrying that the man she loved is slowly slipping away from her, thanks to Nabu.
Brian Blessed as the voice of Nabu
Blessed really has a distinct and booming voice, which would be the ideal one for the Lord of Order we know and love (or hate).
Callum Blue as the voice of Khalis
Blue I felt did a great job as Zod in Smallville, so I thought that, while simply behind a microphone, he could be just as sinister as a centuries-old mummy out to make the world burn.
Jimmy Smits as the voice of Anubis
I picked Smits as I imagine he's got a pretty good vocal range, and playing a god would be an interesting role for him.
Additional voices
-Clive Revill as Dr. Magill
-Jim Ward as Anderson
-Kevin Michael Richardson as a bystander
-Tara Strong as a bystander
And that is a wrap! Thanks for looking, and for your troubles--ladies and gentlemen, THE DOORS:
