EDITORIAL: Five Non-Powered DC COMICS Characters That Need Big Screen Exposure

The appeal of superhero films are the larger than life abilities they possess, but there are always those other characters who are just as important but do not possess any super-powers. Who should be featured on-screen though?

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that comics are filled with larger-than-life superheroes to fulfill our greatest fantasies, but what about the characters that don’t have powers? In comic books, there are characters that don’t possess abilities but are just as important as the powered heroes. Notable characters of this type are Lois Lane, Amanda Waller, Dick Grayson, The Joker and obviously Batman. However, all of the ones that were just mentioned have indeed been featured in a film regardless of whether their portrayal was faithful to their comic book persona. Now with the news that Warner Bros. is definitely trying to get a Justice League movie going, these characters could eventually appear in a DC shared universe.

Jason Todd/Red Hood

Jason Todd deserves to be on the big screen because he is an incredibly badass character; a murderous vigilante who still helps Gotham. Starting out as a rebellious kid, Jason was soon adopted by Batman and took up the mantle of Robin. After being kidnapped by The Joker, Jason was killed in a warehouse explosion alongside his mother. Now resurrected by the Lazarus Pit, Jason dons the Red Hood alias and isn’t afraid to kill. If the script and direction is right, they could get the perfect parallel between Jason and Bruce’s method of crime fighting on screen. It could really test the strength and depths of how far Bruce’s morals really go. The next Batman reboot needs to have Jason.

Casting Choice
Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) is an extremely popular choice, and he even voiced Jason in Batman: Under The Red Hood. After watching Supernatural for seven years, I support this casting.

The Question (Vic Sage)

For those who don’t know, The Question is a character who sees the whole world as a conspiracy theory. The Question could add some excellent mystery to a Justice League movie, with Sage revealing red-herrings to throw off the fans on their theories while watching the film. He was heavily used in the animated Justice League Unlimited series. Sadly, this version of The Question no longer exists as DC decided to retcon all of his famous history and turn The Question into a magical based being who was stripped of his identity. Hopefully the New 52 incarnation of The Question is soon disregarded and never makes it to the big screen.

Casting Choices
Although casting a character that hides his face seems pretty easy, I still think the studio behind the movie needs to give it a lot of thought. I personally think either David Tennant (Doctor Who, Fright Night) or Misha Collins (Supernatural) could be great in this role. No, it’s not because they both wear trench coats. (Or maybe it is.)

Harley Quinn

There are obviously plenty of fans that have asked why this hasn’t happened sooner, especially in Nolan’s trilogy (despite possibly creating a drastic change to the character). Harley Quinn deserves to be on film because she is an integral part in Batman mythology. Not only is she the overly attached girlfriend of The Joker, but she also has some unique skills of her own. On the outside, Harley may seem like a fool but she is actually incredibly smart due to her background as a psychiatrist. Harley definitely shouldn’t be seen as weak, as she has the knowledge to take down Batman herself, which was evident in Batman: The Animated Series. Harley had captured Batman and would have killed him if The Joker didn’t stop her. Making her debut in a cartoon to become one of the best comic characters, I think it's time for some movie exposure.

Casting Choice
I’ve seen plenty of names thrown around for Harley and I personally don’t have a good idea but perhaps someone like Hayden Panettiere (Scream 4, Heroes) or Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) could pull off a great psychotic like Harley.

Green Arrow/Oliver Queen

DC’s flagship archer must eventually get his big-screen adaptation, or at least be featured in a Justice League movie. Oliver Queen was a billionaire who was shipwrecked on an island. While stranded on the island, Queen discovered many different methods of survival and mastered archery. Upon returning to Star City, he took the responsibility of protecting the city under the alias of Green Arrow. Not only has he been in several television appearances but he is also starring in his own upcoming TV show on The CW. Wouldn’t that be perfect way to set up the character for a massive movie?

Casting Choice
Keeping it simple: Stephen Amell. Although it's highly unlikely any actor portraying a character on the small screen would be used in a movie version, there's a first time for everything! If Amell proves popular, why not?

The Huntress (Helena Bertinelli)

Helena Bertinelli is not widely known by the casual audience, although she did have her time to shine in the Justice League TV series. Helena is a very tragic character, much like Batman. She witnessed the death of her family at a very young age which eventually prompted her to seek revenge on the assassin who killed her parents. However, she lacks the solid morals that Batman has which will thrust fans into unfamiliar territory if she is ever to star in her own movie, or alongside the Justice League. Even though the movie may need the R rating, Helena would be perfect for the big screen, especially against or alongside Batman.

Casting Choice
I think this is an extremely tough role to cast, so I took to Twitter to ask my followers. Most replied with Kate Beckinsale. What do you think?

Obviously, there are plenty more characters that don't have powers that deserve a spot on the big screen, but these five are the ones I would like to see most. Which of these five would you want to see on the big screen? Vote below.

Read your article a little while ago. I think all of these characters deserve a worthy screen time. However, I feel The Question is probably the only one who seems possible within the near future. Not that Huntress isn't. And the idea for Green Arrow is probably a perfect set up. But The Question would be able to offer a completely different take, making it truly a stand alone film that could elaborate a DCU.

I had a sense of urgency to come back to this article and comment because while I read the casting choices you put down. I agree with all of them except for Harleen Quinzel. I think Kristen Bell (also from Heroes) would be a better actress for the role of a psychopath. Go back and watch her performance on Heroes and while that's not as severe, there is a taste of what a playful killer would feel like coming from her. I saw her in an episode and immediately thought Quinzel.

I'd love to see Arnell's Queen to be featured in the shared live-action universe, as for now. Good reasoning, too, and that strengthens my idea. Yes, for the Question...and Misha Collins. There shouldn't be any debate there. I'd love to see the Red Hood, too, and the character is probably the CBM role Jensen Ackles will fit best in.

Surprisingly enough, I find myself not that eager to see both Harley Quinn and the Huntress in any movie, although I for sure won't have any problem with their inclusion. The non-superpowered female character DC has to do right the most? Amanda Waller.

As a fan of The Question from the Ditko era through the O'Neil run, Rucka and others, and as an amateur filmmaker, it is my dream to do a Question Tetralogy. I have already written the first screenplay and am outlining the remaining three stories. Really, it is my dream to bring this character to the big screen. A nice blend of Blade Runner and Zack Snyder's Watchmen for stylistic purposes with the first five issues of O'Neil's serving as the foundation for the first film. Couple that with some original ideas and cherry-picking some things from Ditko's era and you have a Vic Sage ripe for the major audiences.

I definitely want The Question.

But without a doubt, Jeffery Combs has to do the live-action version. It would be a monumental film if he played the character again.

@Pepsiguy2 I'm just a big superhero nut so I usually browse the web for the stuff I've either missed or feel would be entertaining to pass the time. Plus, the more you watch (regardless of how poor or fabulous it is), the larger the memory bank of actors you have to refer to (if fancasts were ever something you got involved with).

Kristen Bell comes through in season 2 so you don't have to continuously watch all the other seasons. While she's in the others, you'll get what I mean about psycho chick sooner than later.

I go with The Question. In any case was the huntress the one that appeared in the lame "bird of pray"?

I like the idea of The Question, but it does seem like he's almost an exact copy of Rorschach from Watchmen

Green Arrow! He's got his own show. He's part of the JL. He needs his own film!!!

You forgot the golden age Sandman as written by Matt Wagner and drawed by Guy Davis in Sandman Mystery Theatre, IMHO he is one of the best characters.

@Martay: because Rorschach IS a copy of The Question, originally Watchmen was to be based on existing characters of Charlton comics aquired by DC comics but DC changed their mind and Alan Moore had to tweak the characters a bit.

Hayden Panettiere or Zooey Deschanel for Harley? What about Jennifer Lopez or Sarah Michelle Gellar? See, I can throw out random names who would be horrible, too.

Good choices for the most part but one hero that would translate really well, for me, is Dr. Fate. You would have the mystical element mixed with the action element. Feature the Kent Nelson version and have the origin in the 1920's so you can include the archaeological elements in his origin. Change it around a bit so he doesn't age and is raised/trained by Nabu. I know the not aging part strays from the origin but I think it would be an ok addition to the story. Use either Mordru or Negal as the enemy and hint at other heroes, like Spectre and Captain Marvel. I'd even go a little different and have Dr. Fate almost be the "watcher" of other heroes and now about their origins (supes, batman, WW, GL) and he could be integral to pulling them all together (almost like Fury) for a JL movie. Just a thought. Oh, and full helmet for Dr. Fate...None of that half helmet BS.

I could see Misha Collins as the Question more than David Tennant. Could see Tennant making an amazing Joker though.

I would like to see Green Arrow brought to the screen in much the same way Batman and now Superman is. You have to emotionally connect with these heroes, and that is exactly what WB/DC are doing. I could see Oliver Queen being played by Garrett Hedlund, with an all star cast like Batman did.

Red Hood: The Lost Days. If you haven't read it...read it. It's pretty awesome seeing Jason Todd's transformation into the Red Hood.

I like Jason but without the Batman connection I don't see it happening. Question would be the easiest, and if Arrow does well maybe they can parlay that into the SuperMax film

One day I'm going to make an editorial about the STORIES that need the Big Screen Exposure, rather than an excuse for characters to pop up in the theater.

Of these choices, I picked Green Arrow.

Green Arrow, then the Question. I could see the Question as more of a cooky supporting character, like in the JLU series. I only say that because I've never read his comics.

WB unlikely to release another DC characters, if the character is not popular enough. DC already tried Catwoman, Jonah Hex, n Green Lantern. N we knew how there were critically panned n big loss in money.

A mixture of superhero and conspiracy.

And Huntress could be his sidekick .. 2 birds.

Question for sure. But after more important heroes like Wonder Woman and Flash get films.

@VicSage You too, huh? I sometimes like to think of how a Question movie would work, and how a story would go, but I'm not real savvy with him.

Green Arrow and The Question! I loved them in the JLU cartoon (and the GA animated short), and if done right they could make great movies.
JYCowboy

My first impression on this list is there are way too many Batman related characters. With DKR just out, Warners needs to let the Bat rest a while.

The Question would be my pick. There are films in the same vein that writers can learn what not to do. Constatine and The Spirit come to mind. The style and story should be old film noir detective with a real good cinematographer who knows how to light smoke.

I read the O'neil run but not the Ditko and still see the character very viable.

I went with Huntress . . . I'm in the minority I guess.

Speaking from a Batman standpoint, I'd love to see Renee Montoya in the next Bat-franchise.
