Back in 2009, I've decided to cast some of the major players in the DC Comics universe, however, this article features characters related directly with Green Lantern only. The castings for other DC characters are either on separate articles or have not yet been posted. My casting in this article DOES NOT correspond with the upcoming Green Lantern film as this was casted before the GL movie.
NOTE: My fan cast is base primarily on the outer appearance of the actors/actresses because (naturally) I did not examine the acting ability of every single actor/actress. I am well aware that some people CANNOT act…
NOTE: I did not cast every freakin’ person in the GL. This is more of a general casting.
The Good Guys
Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern
Regardless of what some people say, I think Ryan Reynolds is perfect for Hal because he can play the cocky, one-liner guy as evident by his brief performance as Wade Wilson in the Wolverine movie. In that movie, he wasn’t cracking weird-ass, silly jokes. He’s also the right age to play someone who isn’t too old but also can have enough experience. He is also the perfect age especially if there will be sequels.
Megan Fox as Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire
Yeah…I know ya’ll probably gonna bash me for this but this is who I thought could’ve been Carol before the GL movie casted Blake Lively. To be honest, I went with her because (at least for the first movie) I’ve only imagine Carol Ferris as the daughter of the CEO (who may be handed the reign during the movie) and not a test pilot (she would be too damn young). I realize that Megan Fox doesn’t have great acting talent but I think she definitely has the looks. She just gotta stop playing every role as if the character were sluts.
Bradley Cooper as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern
I really like Bradley Cooper and he also seems to be a fan favorite (at least before). I think, like Reynolds, he can pull of that cocky, wise-cracking guy. He’s funny and a decent actor.
Jared Padalecki as Kyle Rayner/Green Lantern
I’m not quite sure if anybody will like this choice. Heck, I don’t even really like my own choice. However, I can’t seem to find an actor who resembles Kyle Rayner and has the proper age. A popular choice seems to be Milo Ventimiglia and I would’ve casted him…if he was 5 years younger than he is right now (33). He’s currently the same age as Ryan Reynolds which is kinda off-putting ‘cause I’ve always imagined Kyle Rayner as a next generation GL. Nevertheless, I can definitely imagine Jared as a young freelance graphic artist.
Tay Diggs as John Stewart
To be honest, I’ve never heard of Tay Diggs. Just saying. But I needed a bald/bald-ish African American to play John Stewart and he definitely looks the part. He may not be that tall but I don’t think that’s much of a factor. He has won several awards before so I’m willing to take a leap with his acting. (I do know he’s a singer).
Sean Bean as Alan Scott
I’m a huge fan of Sean Bean and I think that he can be a great Alan Scott. He has tremendous acting talent and is the right age (not too old, not too young). I realize that he normally plays bad guys (I acknowledge that he’ll be pretty good as Deathstroke) but he was the only person I’ve ever considered for Alan Scott.
Allison Mack as Arisia/Green Lantern
I’m actually a fan of Allison Mack’s character in Smallville and I think her acting would be a lot better if she had a better script to work with. Because, I’m a fan of hers, I decided to cast her as Arisia primarily because she looks like the spitting image of the character.
Natalie Portman as Jade/Green Lantern
I’m not sure what prompted me to cast Natalie Portman as Jade except that fact those I despise her character in Star Wars, I acknowledge that she is a great actress. She has the right size and acting chop to play this character. I realize, that Jade is not a super important character in the GL and she would be featured more prominently if the movie focused on Kyle Rayner.
Chris Meloni as Abin Sur
Honestly, I don’t know why I casted Chris Meloni considering that I’ve never seen him act though I know that he’s in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I actually saw someone else casting him (sorry, I don’t know who) and I think he definitely can be made to look like the pivotal Abin Sur.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Sodam Yat/Green Lantern
I’m not sure what to say for this one. I’m not a huge fan of him but I think that J.R. Meyers got enough acting chops to pull off Sodam Yat. He definitely has the right look.
Michael Clarke Duncan & CGI as Kilowag
C’mon. Do I have to say anything? He’s got the size, the look, and the voice to play Kilowag. With a little make up and CGI to enhance the look (obviously) I think he would play him perfectly.
Stanley Tucci & CGI as Tomar-Re
I’m a big fan of Stanley Tucci and I think that he’s a great actor. For some reason, his look just reminds me of Tomar-Re and because Tomar-Re is one of the more important alien Green Lantern, I think it’s suitable to have such a good actor portray him. I think Stanley would do a really good job as Tomar.
Missy Peregrym as Jillian “Cowgirl” Pearlman
There’s really no real reason why I chose Missy Peregrym except for the fact that she looks sorta tomboy-ish, Southern-ish but still hot. She looks the type of person who would snap back at someone. I’ve never seen her act though I know she starred in Rookie Blue. She’s also the perfect age to play a foil to Carol Ferris. Heck…I bet she’s probably a better candidate to play Carol than M. Fox.
Christopher Lloyd as the Guardians of the Universe
I know Christopher Lloyd may be more on the comedic side but…gosh darn it…I’ve recently rewatch the Back to the Future series and I feel like he’s perfect for the role. I mean…just look at him! I think he’ll definitely have the right voice.
The Bad Guys
Mark Strong as Sinestro
I’ve recently became a big fan of Mark Strong and I think that he will play a perfect Sinestro. I originally casted Hugo Weaving but I think Mark Strong fits the bill better because I feel like while Hugo Weaving can be “scarey”, Mark Strong is better at being the physically imposing and intimidating person.
Anthony Michael Hall as Black Hand
I don’t know why I casted AMH as Black Hand but I did…so deal with it. I really don’t know much about the dude. He looks kinda creepy...:)
Hugo Weaving & CGI as Nekron
Like I said previously, I think Hugo Weaving can definitely pull of that “scarey” character so I decide to cast him as Nekron. I think everybody can acknowledge that Hugo Weaving is a great actor who can definitely pull off this role, a big one if it ever was a Black Night movie.
Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond
I probably would not have picked Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond except I forgot to cast Hammond until the movie already casted him so I just decided to go with him. However, in my version, he would be much more like the picture to the left instead of the poofy hair guy in the movie. He would be more of a businessman than a scientist.
Til Schweiger & CGI as Atrocitus
I love Til’s performance in Inglourious Basterds and because he looks so sinister and evil (despite being a bad guy), I decided to cast him as Atrocitus so he can further explore the power that comes with the unrestrained killing of people. Also, for reference, the reason why I casted him and did not include Larfleeze and such is b/c my origin movie would be based on Secret Origin in which Atrocitus had a hand in killing Abin Sur.
Alan Rickman & CGI as Krona
I’m not sure why I chose Alan Rickman except for the fact that he is a good actor. Obviously, CGI will greatly enhance his appearance. One of the factors that did sway me was the pics of a younger Rickman with a Krona-like beard :)
