Hey there friends, I want to make this my last interest in the whole Green Lantern thing we have had over the past week. Many praise it while I and others bash it for being a disgrace. The people who are for it say it’s great and a good comic book movie while MovieBob is the ultimate case of being someone who flat out hates it. I’m not on that level of extreme as Bob was, but I can see where he is coming from, he didn’t want the movie to fail because of the grandeur and scope this material has. However this movie (To date) is the best example of how divided we comic book movie fans are, this single moment in time has shown just how die hard we are when it comes to our opinions on the same thing.

Yet this movie needs to be thoroughly examined much better, are we, the naysayers blinded by high hopes and expectations that we wanted and never got or are the wide eyed viewers too blind to see what was in front of them. So rather than a rant, this is not an attack on either side, this is just an examination at how this comic book movie has made alliances to certain sides, what worked, what didn’t, and how it could it be improved. So in a way this is a redo of my prior article but with a clearer mind and a better focus.

First the biggest detail is the CGI in the movie; you either love or hate it. The best thing about the movie are the constructs, I admit that the creativity of the constructs the various Lanterns we see them use are impressive. However there were a few constructs that required an explanation but they are never brought up at all in this movie. The moments when Hal created a mini-gun that had real world casings and when he created a flamethrower that shot real flames. Does the movie properly explain the rings ability to create real items such as gunpowder and gasoline, there is not a moment like that and it gives this slight disconnect that there might have been a scene that mentioned such an ability, so we are left with real things coming from constructs. The other concern in terms of the CGI was the suit, the whole light construct works as a suit I didn’t mind, it made some sense that a suit of cloth and fabric wouldn’t make sense in space but to save on some budget they should have had Hal and Sinestro, clearly the only two realistic Lanterns, since it was two real actors and not CGI, they could have had them wearing realistic looking suit that the actors could have worn, to give them some knowledge of what they are wearing rather than just picturing it until post production. I was the smart one and chose not to see the movie in 3D so I will not comment of that.

The second issue is the story, now this is where people are making the most divide. To me, this story was disappointing, rushed, clichéd, and of course oddly edited. Now the story is the most basic telling of an origin story: Back flash to childhood, troubled past, training, saves the day to gain notoriety, gets involved with love interest, must overcome obstacle holding them back and fights big baddie to become a true hero. How can a simple formula could be ruined, simply put, shoehorned in elements that go nowhere and either drop or never explained. The addition of his relatives, especially the nephew, they are quickly added to show Hal is not the typical loner hero but after he leaves their house, they are never seen again, no mention if they survived the attack. Another example is Hector Hammond coming into the plot and being shoved into the romance plot to make him the other side of a love triangle, which doesn’t add any weight to the story, nothing is gained from this added in plot.

Then there are things that seemed out of place and make little sense to the movie; Hal leaves the corps after showing he has fear and doesn’t have what it takes, but KEEPS THE RING…..uhhhhh when you QUIT a job you usually hand in your things, not keep them for convenience. Speaking of the Ring, they mention it lets him sense danger around him, so how does he know Hector is in that building. If the ring could sense Fear inside people, wouldn’t it go crazy with Parallax flying around killing off planets? Also this got me and I’m sure a few of you as well, Sinestro and a group of lanterns go after Parallax, now Sinestro says the BEST members of the Corps went with him, the BEST mind you couldn’t take this monster down but Parallax was taken down by two lone Lanterns, the first was Abin Sur a great warrior even amongst the Lanterns and then Hal Jordan, a rookie who used one method of Kilowog’s training, using the Sun and its gravity to destroy Parallax. The big problems of course are the plot holes and it seems like every few minutes in this movie there’s a hole to fall into so to make this article short I won’t go into much detail about them but they are visible.

The third issue, for me which is the biggest, is the cast. I have never seen a more hit and miss casting that I have ever seen in a movie. Now I love Ryan Reynolds as an actor, he has some good range, he can be funny, dramatic, and a leading man. When I see him on screen, I know its him and not Hal Jordan, he fails to live up to others that disappear into the role like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Christopher Reeve as Superman (seriously, when I watched it I was like….that’s Superman), and of course Robert Downey as Tony Stark/Iron Man who practically is Tony Stark. I don’t see that with Reynolds, I know it’s him; he always cracks jokes and is a goof ball no matter what role he is in. He’s not the worse choice, but I really think Bradley Cooper or Nathan Fillion would have been a better fit as a more mature and heroic Hal Jordan, not a man child who needs to learn how to be responsible. Blake Lively, I still stand by my opinion that she is not the Carol Ferris us fans deserved, aside from the fact her hair is brown and not raven black in the comics is a minor gripe, but her trying to be the strong willed woman who will run a company one day is wrongly placed in here since she’s much younger than her comic counterpart. I could have seen better more mature actresses playing this part.

When it comes to the villains, they at least are trying. Peter Sarsgard as Hector Hammond was an interesting choice yet his performance as Hector is really out of place, his hunched over posture, his mannerisms, and his overall look, just screamed of Dr. Forester from MST3K or the mad doctor from Batman and Robin, it’s too strange and alien, even in a movie about alien cops. Now clearly Mark Strong was the best thing in this movie, I love Mark Strong as the villain, that’s what he is best at, being a bad guy who you want to know more. Kick-ass and Sherlock Holmes are the best two villains he has played since they are very different villains, yet with Sinestro he plays him as a potential villain, showing he has arrogance and evil intentions inside him, yet a character you want to know more about yet never given the chance. I won’t go into Amanda Waller since she does nothing great in the movie other than trying to be a shameless Nick Fury style character or the others since they go nowhere, except one, I mentioned this plenty of times, I hate the guy who played Hals friend….yes I know he has a friend in the comics, but this guy, he’s someone who has no bearing on the plot, he’s just there to be the guy who just makes faces and makes bad jokes.

The final issue is the critics, now the critics went off on this film like I have never seen the likes before at a comic book movie since….well……the 90s comic book movies that nearly killed the genre. Were they harsh, yes, a movie getting reviewed as badly as this one has a huge impact for its success. The biggest concern I had was when Warner Bros announced they had the reviews embargoed until the end of the week, that’s a red flag in my mind, whenever a studio does something to prevent reviews is usually a bad thing, I remember GI Joe: Rise of Cobra didn’t get screened but managed to do good (I enjoyed that movie more). Now critics are just old film fans that always put the high standards on many films like are your typical popcorn flicks, much like this one. Many put the blame on The Dark Knight which pretty much puts the highest standards which to them any future CBM’s must live up to, and they shouldn’t in my opinion. Comic book movies are always going to be different and always try to establish new methods and styles, we need to embrace these or else we will get many typical and by the book superhero movies. I’m all for opinions and for the most part, I don’t say they don’t know what they are thinking or they need to turn off their brains for this one. Critics are a part of the Hollywood system, they are a necessary evil, we don’t have to care what they think, and sometimes it’s best to hear another’s opinion, if you take it to heart then good for you, if you don’t then don’t worry what they say.

So in closing, I don’t HATE this film, I just think there was so much potential that it became one of those movies where it got everything wrong. Will there be a sequel?....maybe…its hard to tell since its poor box office results both here and overseas, which if you can’t get the overseas interested in this, then it’s not a good thing at all. This will get the Incredible Hulk treatment or the Superman Returns Sequel we were promised. Warner Bros is a tough company when it comes to making a Franchise that isn’t closed sourced like Harry Potter, and Nolan can only do so many projects for them. I do hope we get a franchise out of this series, there is SO MUCH they can do, many great story lines and characters they can bring into the pop culture, establishing a continuity in a much deeper and rich Cinematic universe, a Green Lantern and Flash movie that exist in the same world, the interaction with many more heroes and villains. They have the power to do greatness; they just need the right light to guide them. Til next time friends, ComicCritc87 OUT!!!!

I don't hate this film, I do agree that they missed an opportunity and WB probably forced the tone of the movie a bit but honestly I think that a sequel to this Movie would be a much much better effort.

Interesting article I disagree that it was a disgrace though and I am guessing you know very little about GL. But I do think the game has changed and it is not good. Like you said this movie had many problems not all of the ones you mentioned do I agree with. Anyway about the game changer people need to realize. Most of these critics and Hollywood do not like CBMs at all. Even though they may give a few good reviews they are sick of them especially the ones that studios spend a lot of money on. Regardless of how you feel about the movie don't you think it was strange that a lot of critics were trashing the movie as soon as they heard how much it cost and they had not seen it yet. And it was not because of the early trailer either, they knew the FX were not done yet. I believe one reason is this, each year the studios have a budget and can make so many movies. The more a big budget movie costs the less other smaller movies are made. As much as some of us want to believe, comics are still not as main stream as we would like. None of us go around talking comics to just anyone. If you say you do you are either a liar or a virgin. These critics want to see artsy films and I am sorry but we will never see a CBM win best picture at the Oscars. It seems that not only some in Hollywood but that the public has gotten tired of CBMs too. No CBM this year has even gotten $70 mil the first week. So I really think we need to stop all this DC vs Marvel BS. Because Green Lantern may not have been perfect but was decent and it certainly was not garbage like some have said on this site. Hell some of those people had been saying that with out even seeing it first pretending they had. Remember that people on the internet are watching and if comic fans trash a movie from the genre that they care so much about why would the general audience care to see it. We need to all support Marvel and DC films because if we do not Hollywood will stop making them.

About things being explained better in the movie I would agree. Maybe they should have had the rings talk like the comics. But would that be excepted by these critics.

One thing you need to understand is in the GL comic, Hal Jordan is special and has always been that way going back to the 50s. In Emerald Dawn I he took down Legion when no other Lantern could and entered the Central Power Battery something no other Lantern had ever done. He had only been a GL like a week. I know that a lot of movies the last 10 years have some story about a "Chosen One" and every one is sick about it but that is what Hal is kind of. It seems these days we have a lot of people telling us that Humans are not that great, were Parasites, we are bad blah blah blah. But in the comics it is Hal, Guy, John, and Kyle's Humanity that makes them all great with Hal being the best.

@Dmon....I have read Emerald Dawn, I have read plenty of stories about Green Lantern, I know a good amount of things, so don't say I don't know a single thing. I know plenty about Green Lantern and his legacy. I doubt even in the 50s they had this all planned out, that Hal Jordan is the messiah of Green Lanterns, that his Humanity is what makes him best....cause you know other sentient creatures in the corps aren't civilized and have some form of Humanity amongst their race. You read my prior article and I mentioned that they should have based the movie off of Emerald Dawn rather than Secret Origin since Emerald Dawn has some things that would have made the film better, making Hal more of a recluse than a man child would have been a much better welcome.

I know we will never see a comic book movie win best picture at the Academy Awards, thats never going to happen and I can live with that. It's just Critics and even people are getting tired of these cookie cutter stories that Hollywood seems to think we need. Honestly did BATMAN BEGINS need to exist, thanks to pop culture and other mediums the average movie goer KNOWS his origin. I understand that an origin story nowadays is important since many comic book movies that are being made today are about more less well known heroes and other comic book characters.

I know that comics are sill a niche group, that it will never be as mainstream as the comic companies hope for, and I certainly don't make references or mention comic book facts to my friends or strangers at my work, I do that at my local comic shop. I don't think we will see comics hitting the mainstream, they will always be looked down upon by people who don't get it.

As for less comic book movies, yeah I'm sure theres going to be a natural decline, because many properties have been done before or the studio passes on a good one. The genre will continue to prosper but naturally its going to evolve like many other genres have, they are waiting for that one CBM that changes the game and reinvigorates the genre. The audiences that people are going to see these are always changing and looking to be challenged but at the same time, don't want the same thing time after time.

As for DC/Marvel, this is a battle that will never end, I get people want to see DC movies because of characters they want to see on the big screen but the problem is that most of those characters are still hard to take serious when it comes to bringing them into a mainstream, average Joe moviegoer. Would The Flash work, a man who wears red spandex and runs really fast be a good comic book movie? Would a Martian Manhunter movie be great? Could audiences get the deep history of Hawkman and Hawkwoman? Could Aquaman be even more bad than Green Lantern. When it comes to DC, they need to just make a Justice League movie thats just on its own, without connected movies since they are late to the game on that one. The blame should be put on WB for not green lighting or bringing these movies to us faster. that could have had a 10 year start at creating a cinematic universe with each Justice League member they wanted to use then top it off with a Justice League movie...but they didn't, they held back because WB knows they hold good franchises but don't want the risk. Marvel is now ahead of the game and WB is rushing to bring together a Justice League movie that will no doubt confuse movie goers since three of its franchises are not connect in any way

@ComicCritic87 the reason I thought you did not know that much about the comic was because of some of the stuff you brought up like Hector Hammond for example. In the comics Hammond is obsessed with Carol. And there was a couple of other things you mentioned which I don't want to get into because I have already touched on a few in other comments on this article and the other you did.

Anyway about the DC movie thing versus Marvel. In that statement your Marvel Fan Boy colors are showing even though you may not mean them to. I do not think DC characters are any harder to take serious then Marvel. On Flash in the TV show from the 90s they did a pretty good job on the suit and even explaining it's purpose in its design. Also Flash does not just "run real fast" he can move, think, and react at superhuman speeds. And can vibrate so fast that he can walk through walls, travel through time and can also lend and borrow speed. With his mental speed he can speed read and also his thoughts are so fast he has some immunity to telepathy. I don't see this any less serious then Spider-man in his red and blue spandex who's little claw thingys can actually go through the soles of his shoes and can hold up his weight and the weight of what ever he is holding. Also if the little claws are that strong why does he never use them as a weapon. Also why does he have Spidey sense and how does that work? Do spiders have some kind of telepathy? WTF?

@ComicCritic87 On Hawkman and Hawkwoman it depends on which origin you want to go with either the magic or science one. I actually think the magic one would be easier. But there are better characters then Hawkman and Hawkwoman they should make movies of first. On Martian Manhunter I think he would be accepted about as seriously as Ant-Man, Wasp and Ms. Marvel. Though Ant-Man and Wasp could work in a PIXAR type movie. I do think he works better in a JLA movie then those 2 work in an Avengers movie. I don't think MM could keep people entertained in a solo movie and that can be said about Black Widow and Hawkeye too. On Aquaman even though Marvel fans do not want to accept it he works just as much as Namor the Sub-Mariner if not better. The main reason Aquaman is trashed more then Namor is because Aquaman is more known by the general pubic and that might even work in Aquaman's favor. I mean at least Aquaman wears clothes. No one would take Namor seriously in a Speedo and little fairy wings on his feet. Also for the last 20 years Aquaman has had a much more darker personality then he used to. Another great DC character that would work for a movie would be the Spectre and he makes way more sense and is less silly in concept then Ghost Rider.

@ComicCritic87 On the origin thing you would be pretty surprised on just how much the general audience really knows. I was reading an article not to long ago about the casting of Martha Kent on yahoo and people in comments were saying they thought Superman was raised by his Aunt. LOL

@Dmon...I'm neither a Marvel or a DC diehard, I appreciate each company, each have their strengths. I'm just saying that when it comes to the cinematic versions, Marvel has been taking the initiative to create and establish a proper and well thought out movie universe. While Warner Bros just sat on projects they fail to grasp at marketing let alone handle them without ruining any potential of a proper franchise. The flash could work if done right but will people take him serious with the little lightning bolts on the costume and being able to fit an entire costume in a ring compartment? This is about finding that balance between being too campy and too realistic, comic book movies need to find that proper balance, many pull it off and some can't.

Also, Spider-mans power works off of precognition, not telepathy. He is constantly aware of his surrounds and if theres a moment when he is in danger, it kicks in and he has enhanced reflexes.

Namor could work better since there are variations of him wearing actual clothes. The tiny wings are a strange thing but they could work around that. The only reason people know aquaman is thanks to Hanna Barbara and all the times people rip on how useless he is.

The Spectre is an omnipotent being who wears a green speedo, gloves and hood with cape, that casts judgment onto people whereas Ghost Rider is a real man cursed with a power he doesn't want yet he has to wield it since it would be dangerous if someone else had it. So yeah Ghost Rider is the SILLIER version.

Hawkman and Hawkwoman combine the science and mysticism in a way that WB would have to painfully find a way to provide both without sacrificing the other. I still wouldn't see it since I don't like their characters.

In terms of the Superman thing you mentioned, thats from people who are more unaware of the various forms of Superman, the first movie didn't make that much mention of her and Returns she is barely there too.

I still say that WB/DC CAN make better CBM movies but they are picking from the bottom of the barrel like Jonah Hex whereas they had plenty of times and opportunities to create a rich, solid, and well developed legacy in the movies, but instead they are trying to create franchises out of all the other properties they own. Warner Bros needs to become ballsy and give us the REAL films these characters deserve. I don't want a JL movie that has these characters without explaining how they all banded together, unless they just make that movie a total origin story of the team, which then I could see that and would be entertained.

It seems to me that you are a DC diehard and being the knight with sword and shield to defend what you love, I admire your ambition, you are throwing everything you have to say that I'm wrong, that the general audience is wrong, that critics are wrong, that this movie deserves a sequel. They need to get rid of THREE writers and have a single writer that can pull off science fiction movies. Give us a director that knows how to direct actors behind a green screen, give us better villains that are true to source. Green Lantern is this decades Water World
Dmon
Dmon - 6/26/2011, 4:28 PM
@ComicCritic87 I was not trying to throw everything back at you sorry if you thought that. I was just trying to have a discussion. And I was not trying to say DC characters were better at all. I said that they were on par. Spider-Man is more popular then Flash but I believe if Spider-Man can be excepted so can Flash.

About translating the characters. I think Marvel does have that down better but it has nothing to do with the source material. Just look at Thor we have Donald Blake in the comics and the studio was smart enough to take that out. Because the general public would not get it. I think with Green Lantern the problem was they tried to squeeze in to much of whats in the comic.

About Namor you did not explain how he would work better you just said he had different outfits. Where as Aquaman could still use his Iconic outfit or some variation of it with still keeping the integrity of the original. Plus I think if they did do a Namor movie the general public would think they ripped off Aquaman even though Namor has been around longer.

About Jonah Hex I think they were just trying to find some obscure story that would not cost that much to make.

@RoyalTenenbaum I agree it should have been more adult. But I disagree about Sinestro he is more interesting then Whiplash and defiantly more interesting then Iron Monger. He is like Hitler or Stalin on his planet and I hope that if they make a sequel they will show how he treats the people of his Planet.

@RoyalTenenbaum I think you have to have the constructs or why even bother to begin with. That is like saying lets have a spider-man movie but not give him webs. I thought they all looked good except the chain net you mentioned. I like Thomas Kalmaku in the movie and thought he had one of the best lines. "He proposed." LOL. I think one of the problems with this film was they should have taken longer with it maybe have released it in November. It seems a lot of the $200 million dollars was spent to rush the job. Also about the jet being in the hanger so what if you want to nitpick I can bring up several problems with Thor and First Class. And I like Nathan Fillion but he is a TV actor and slightly to old for the part if you are ok with those things I think ideally David Boreanaz would have been better for Hal.
