It's the weekend CBM community and you know what that means! It's time to kick back, relax, and have a little fun as we bring you ideas and content from outside the box. Previously,we had a ton of fun looking at all the superhero cartoon openings of the '90s. I wasn't surprised by the winner but I was surprised by the winning margin. Batman: The Animated Series was a runaway winner, taking out strong contenders such as X-Men and Spider-Man.
Now we'll take a look at fan films, some of which have a cult following bigger than you can probably imagine. Films such as Grayson, World's Finest, Batman: Dead End, and Troops show that you don't necessarily need a big budget and costly SFX to make a film that will appeal to the nerd enthusiasts of the world. Some fan film productions go on to actually receive significant praise in the fan community. For instance, the series Star Trek: Hidden Frontier produced 50 episodes over seven seasons - compared to only 34 episodes for the 1970s sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980 combined. Thanks to the Internet, amateur filmmakers have the ability to promote their films to a worldwide audience. This in turn, has prompted several studios to create official policies and programs regarding fan films. Lucasfilm's Official Star Wars Fan Film Awards is one such program, with provies limited support and sanction of fan creations and is a marked contrast to the attitudes of many other copyright holders, such as Fox, which used a cease and desist letter to close a Max Payne short. MGM is another studio which has been known to prevent fan films of James Bond and actively pursues the removal of such films from the internet. DC Comics (Warner Bros.) used to also be in this category, at least up until the 1990s. In 2008, however, DC Comics had a reversal of policy when president, Paul Levitz, gave provisional permission to fan filmmakers, stating definitively, "We’re against anything that monetizes our assets and our copyrights without our permission. We are not against things where people use our assets if they don’t do anything monetarily with them." But enough with all that, let's get to the real reason we're all here, to watch the films and start voting. Enjoy!
