The Spiderman reboot is happening. Honestly, I couldn’t be more ecstatic. Sam Raimi did a fine job in bringing his vision to the big screen. However, me, along with many other Spidey fans, knew right away, that this wasn’t the same superhero we all knew and loved. Indeed, he was a nerdy, but he also cried and whined, while chasing after a girl who looked like a foot. Gwen Stacey wasn’t introduced until the third film; she had no purpose in the movie. We never saw one of the most famous Spidey baddies, the Lizard. Spiderman never quipped during his many battles. And oh yeah, the Green Goblin looked as threatening as a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger.
We can argue about Sam Raimi’s Spiderman until we’re blue in the face. But times are changing! We must now look forward to a new Spiderman movie, slated to hit theaters in 2012. The movie’s new director, Marc Webb, is someone who is new to the super hero scene. His first feature film, the indie 500 Days of Summer, was an instant hit with critics and fans alike. Not to mention, it was my favorite movie of 2009. (Take that Avatar!)
Fans all over the web have been attempting to cast the Spiderman Reboot. In this article, I will do my best to give the roles to worthy actors and actresses. Spiderman has always been dear to my heart, so I can guarantee that I am not messing around. One item of note, before I begin: I will cast only the parts that will/ should appear in the first of the new line of Spiderman movies. Therefore, I will not be casting all of the villains, supporting characters, etc. So sit back, relax, and enjoy, as I share with you my picks for the Spiderman Reboot.
Flash Thompson – Travis Van Winkle
When I saw this guy in Friday the Thirteenth, I immediately thought of Flash. Everything about him screams “Jerky Jock.” I can definitely see Travis as someone who can play the girl-getting bully, who also has a soft side. Winkle is someone I see that can become a person that the girls love, and the guys loathe, which is what Flash Thompson is supposed to be like.
Betty Brant – Rebecca Herbst
Betty Brant was the older chick that Peter fell for. There was a unique beauty to her. Her looks were always very subtle, yet lavishing at the same time. When combining these factors, you get Rebecca Herbst. She’s an older girl that all the guys would go crazy for; her best asset is her angel-like face.
J. Jonah Jameson - ?
Jameson was so perfectly cast in the Raimi films, that I feel injustice even thinking about a replacement. I want to know what some of
you guys think. I would totally be up for recasting J.K. Simmons.
Aunt May – Julia Blake
So many people are talking about Jamie Lee Curtis and Helen Mirren. Let me ask you a question. What is Aunt May’s most memorable quality? In my opinion, it’s her vulnerability, combined with her kindness. The fans have always felt for Aunt May’s well being. I feel like Curtis and Mirren won’t do a good job in conveying this. My pick is Julia Blake, who had a small role in X-men Origins: Wolverine. She was the only character I cared for. I was so sad when she was shot. That could carry over to a major role, and I feel she could do a great job.
Uncle Ben – Tim Robbins
Uncle Ben should be a demanding presence, especially because he utters the greatest line in Marvel history, which I hope all of you know. I think Sony should go after a big name for this role, just so people understand the magnitude/importance of the character. Tim Robbins comes to mind. His phenomenal acting chops would do Uncle Ben justice.
Curt Connors – Simon Baker
If you’ve seen the Mentalist, I’m sure you would agree. In my opinion, Curt should be a likable guy, yet could still pull of being a threat. I think that he will be introduced in the first movie. His transformation would happen in one of the following movies. I definitely think that Baker’s acting ability would translate well to Connors.
Norman Osborne – John C. McGinley
Wow, does he look the part. I haven’t seen his acting in action, but the his looks alone should get him some consideration. One item of note, I feel that Norman will not be the villain in the first film.
Main Villain :
Max Dillon/ Electro – Ben Foster
Ben Foster would make a great Electro. Not only does he look the part, but he has proven time and time again that he has tremendous acting potential. He also has a look that is relatable, which could give this villain a “human side.” I am praying that a Spidey v. Electro battle in Times Square, a la Ultimate Spiderman the game, will happen in this flick.
The Core 5 – One thing you’ll immediately notice, is that I am casting older. In my opinion, my picks can definitely act the part of a high schooler. If not, then oh well. These should be who they choose, and if they decide to go in a different direction, then it’s fine with me.
Eddie Brock – Jensen Ackles
He’s the perfect anti-hero to Spidey’s hero. I would love to see Eddie have a big part in Peter’s life right from the get-go. Jensen has the look, and if you’ve seen My Bloody Valentine, you know he’s got the talent. Jensen Ackles would bring redemption to the role that Topher Grace spat on.
Gwen Stacy – Sara Paxton
Come on guys, she’s gorgeous! I know she was in that shame of a flick, Superhero Movie, but she has the looks that perfectly match Gwen. Stick glasses on her, and clean off some of her make. There you go. You have Gwen Stacy. Her acting ability isn’t fantastic, but this could be her career’s turning point.
Harry Osborn – Adam Brody
One of the things in Raimi’s franchise that I loved, was the dynamic between Peter and Harry. Tobey was this nerdy, average looking guy, while Harry was handsome and rich. In my opinion, that’s what makes Harry’s life so tragic. He has everything, yet he is still miserable. In my vision, I see Adam Brody as a great candidate to portray Harry.
Mary Jane Watson- Mary Elizabeth Winstead
What’s the one word that comes to your mind when you think of MJ? No, not Tiger. Bombshell. MEW is a beauty that could pull of being a model, actress, etc. She’s 1000 times better than our old Mary Jane.
And now to cast the man of the hour. Who will it be? Is it Logan Lerman? No. Zac Efton? Not quite. Robert Pattinson? Please.

Peter Parker – Joseph Gordon Levitt
Please make this happen, Sony! This guy is the epitome of Peter Parker. He’s handsome, quirky, sarcastic, nerdy, sweet, and of course heroic. Not to mention, he is one heck of an actor. A lot of people are going to say no because of his age. But when things are right, they are just right. I will be very upset if he doesn’t get this role. He is PERFECT! Marc Webb…Let’s Go.
