The Perfect "Avengers" Strategy

The Perfect "Avengers" Strategy

Just who will Earth's Mightiest face in 2012's comic book epic "The Avengers"? We may already know...

If there's one thing we know about Marvel Studios, it's that they know how to cover their tracks and create a bigger picture out of tiny references, trivial information and notorious 'Easter eggs'. Since 2008, Marvel has been planning the biggest comic book movie of all time and they've been hyping it up through individual properties; something that's never been done before. For as much as we know about what's going to be happening to the collective members of The Avengers, a question is raised: How is it possible that all these pre and post-Avengers movies are being planned up until 2013, but the one movie that left the biggest cliffhanger yet still doesn't have a planned sequel? I'm talking of course about 'The Incredible Hulk'.

I'm not a betting man, but my guess is that Marvel is going to tie up all loose ends in 2012 and include The Leader as a key player in 'Avengers'. Will he be the sole villain? An accomplice perhaps? Who knows. But you can't just birth a villain at the end of a movie and NOT develop the character; especially such a prominent one that is supposed to be part of an ongoing storyline.

So I believe Marvel is waiting for 'Captain America' to hit theaters next year to reveal the villain(s) for 'Avengers'. They wouldn't be able to reveal the villain because the villain most likely has already been on screen (By that time, anyway.)

As for 'Hulk 2' (if it ever happens), I think Marvel is waiting for 'The Avengers' story to really develop Bruce Banner into a true hero so that by time 'Hulk 2' rolls around, he can finally be part of a movie where he isn't playing the villain in a sense. And I think that after Thunderbolt Ross appears in 'The Avengers', he'll be turned into a greater villain. And as you know, in the comics he eventually becomes the Red Hulk. How visually stunning would it be to see Hulk vs Red Hulk in Real-D 3D!?

(If you're skeptical, you probably don't know anything about Red Hulk. So there's a link to a brief bio on him at the bottom) And T-Bolt most likely agrees to join Tony Stark and Nick Fury in their 'special team' only to get close enough to Banner and get rid of him for good. But since Nick Fury has no plans of destroying Hulk, that won't be happening in 'Avengers'. So maybe the General will get sick of waiting around for others to kill Hulk and he'll do it himself.

So what do you think? While you give me your feedback, I'll be busy writing an editorial on what I think is going on with Hank Pym and Antman.

Dont ever mention Red Hulk.. dont even give Loeb the satisfaction of thinking that horrible horrible piece of rubbish might make it anywhere near the movie fanchies..

As for the loose end in TIH.. i very much doubt the Leader will be in The Avengers, and the chance of a TIH 2 with him as the bad guy doesnt look to promising either.. even the chance that the new Hulk TV show might be connected to the movie and feature the Leader is wishful thinking at best.

As for Ant-Man.. though against popular oppinion im coming round to Edgar Wrights idea.

Man that would be a very good story line for them to lead off from, even with Loki controling Hulk in part one with the leader creating havoc they really would need a team of heros for that. And the Red Hulk sounds pretty awsome to me all that rage waiting to kick some a** all over the place!

Personally I think The Hulk will be used as a catalyst to bring The Avengers together and possibly become part of the team (or at least Bruce Banner will).

In fact I think that would be quite a nice dynamic. Stark/Fury wanting to bring Banner and his knowledge into the fold. Ross being furious as he believes The Hulk belongs to the United States Army.

As for The Avengers film I have a sneaky belief that after The Hulk is used to bring the team together (in the first act) I think the terrorist organisation HYDRA will be the main antagonists. I think they could represent the 'foes that no single superhero could withstand'.

Also it allows for a few personal battles. Captain America and Nick Fury no doubt will have a personal beef against HYDRA. And if Loki is controlling the Hulk then Thor would become more personally involved there. And finally Tony Stark may find out he has some very personal links to HYDRA and SHIELD through his father.

Also I could see The Avengers have quite a few connections with the genre of the western (bare with me) and that Josh Whedon my use that as a template to planning this film. I think the assembling the team may have more than just a passing resemblance to The Magnificent Seven and that each character will have his own personal villain to defeat - similar to Silverado.

And Josh has done this sort of approach before with Firefly which has many strong western references.

That way I think we may see an appearance of The Leader and possibly the Abomination too. I also like to think that the scene at the end of TIH with Tony Stark and General Ross could hint at a lot more. In that scene they both hint that they have 'problems' that need dealing with and that 'a team' could solve them. Maybe we might see a Bourne Ultimatum moment where we actually see this scene repeated in The Avengers film but we see the full weight of its meaning. Could open up many possibilities - why would they need Ross to help SHIELD organise a team?? Is Hawkeye just an exceptional US covert soldier that SHIELD want to put on their roster? What problems do they both have?? If The Hulk is Ross' problem what is SHIELDS??

Questions, questions...

I think the new Avengers animated series gives us a lot of hints of the direction of the Avengers movie. especially when concerning Cap.

Hydra is the army during WWII instead of the Nazis. Baron Zemo is the leader instead of Hitler. And the Red Skull wants Asgardian relics to strengthen their forces.

Any of that could spill into the Avengers movie...

@ CDB - I'm not sure they wouldn't address the Nazi issue in Captain America and The Avengers films. Even though HYDRA will be the main threat I am sure links to the Nazis and Hitler will be made very clear.

I think Hitler even appeared in the clips that were shown to SDCC this year.

What we might see is that HYDRA are the power behind the Nazi throne (so to speak) and that they use Hitler and Nazis as pawns to achieve their own ends rather than being concerned with the Nazi ideal.

I think Marvel has worked a number of angles along the way. The logic that you do not create someone like the Leader and not use him is pretty shaky. We saw a few drips and a smile that is not much of an investment.

I am torn between two ways I think Avengers will go...

1) First half of movie is split between all the Charaters. They get together in the middle because of a Loki-controled Hulk. Final Battle is Loki and a couple of other specials with lots of smaller forces.

2) The Avengers are brought together right at the start to bring down the Hulk. The middle of the movie is them starting to bond as a Team. The end would be Hydra, Loki, or someone else.

I do not expect all that many SuperVillains. A full Team would thrill the Fan in me but I think that might be a bit much for the average person. I am still leaning towards the first version though. I don't see Joss just jumping into a lot of action right off the bat. He may want to give each Character a little time to establish themselves in his film first. This would especially be important if there are ah... flaws in either Thor or Captain America. A little time in Avengers could set the Character on a better path so to speak.

Still think it will be Hulk at the beginning... controlled by Loki (and Hela!) and then after they get Hulk back, it'll be Hydra. Works for me!

sorry... i doubt very seriously the Leader will be in The Avengers...

This is not the last Marvel movie. It is possible they will use the Leader in something else.
