A look into how and why I made this suit

As a kid, I enjoyed reading about Captain America, though he didn’t appeal to me as much as Spider-Man or the X-Men. Sure he was a super powered hero like the rest, but his shield wasn’t as cool as web shooters, optic blasts or the power to control the weather. It wasn’t until I was in my late teens that I realized how important the Red, White and Blue Avenger was to the Marvel Universe. The Super Soldier Serum gave him impeccable agility, strength and stamina; he became the peak of human physical prowess. As great as that is, his physical abilities pale in comparison to his willingness to sacrifice everything for his team and his country. Even his uniform is the embodiment of American ideals: The wings on his helmet symbolize freedom from oppression; his shield symbolizes the strong protecting the weak; the 'A' in place of military rank symbolizes leadership in combat; the uniform pattern (white star on blue field / red and white stripes)is a show of unity, the personification of the America flag.

We all know the tale of how Steve Rogers became Captain America, but how did he come to realize and exemplify what was needed of him? Here is a little synopsis of how I feel his emotional growth into the character came to be:

Steve Rogers settles for a job as an Army illustrator because he's not physically fit to serve in combat. He is approached to volunteer for the Super Soldier Program, and agrees hoping it would allow him the opportunity serve in a theater of war.

After the experiment is a success, the government believes he would better suit their wartime propaganda agenda and parade him around wearing what is known as his Classic WWII suit (bell bottoms and all).

Steve is overwhelmingly upset since he has realized he became a party line tool while troops are dying every day on the frontlines. He refuses to play their role anymore and forces the military to send him to war. He takes up the persona of a regular Army officer, wearing standard issue fatigues and gear.

After months of fighting, he realizes that American soldiers have lost their morale. He now understands that they don't just need a leader, but a living symbol to keep their spirits high. One night, he sneaks away from his unit and acquires the materials needs to become that representation. He creates a uniform that holds the same style as the one he was originally issued, but is effective in combat.

Now on to my project:

I didn’t want to create a ‘costume’ per se, but a uniform. Though I will never use it in a combat situation (as friggin’ cool as that might be), I wanted it to be fully functional. I only wanted to use items that Steve would have been able to scrounge for while making his in the field (give or take a few liberties). Here are the details:

- I used a navy blue M65 field jacket and winter weight pants as a base. After a few wash cycles, the color was faded enough for my taste. In my mind, Steve would have used an America flag as a wrap around piece for the jacket; since I didn’t want to cut up a flag I used pieces of denim.

- I found an authentic US Army WWII helmet. I used only the helmet liner to minimize the weight I had to carry.

-For the mask I used a heavy vinyl material. Leather would have been my first option except that a) it shrinks every time you sweat into it unless properly treated, and b) leather runs around $60 per yard (a bit outside my budget). I cut and sewed it to my measurements and added a buckle from the WWII helmet for the chin strap. The polycarbonate lenses are from a pair of Wiley X tactical goggles. They are flame, fog and pressure resistant.

- I created the shield from sheet aluminum (sorry, no Kevlar). I used automotive paint since it’s heat resistant. I ordered the handle from a company that sells medieval shields; after three tries, I successfully spot-welded in onto the back. The hand/back strap is a modified two-point tactical rifle sling. i decided to go with only three stars because. . well. . it was a hell of alot easier to do.

-For footwear I used US Army desert boots that I painted with fabric paint. The khaki boot covers are authentic WWII US Army issue.

-I purchased the gloves from a military surplus store, though they aren’t for military use. They just so happened to match the vinyl I was using.

-Instead of a red turtleneck, I just used a red, ribbed skully hat. I cut the top open and wore it as a scarf under the jacket.

- The equipment belt and harness are both WWII issued gear (stamped 1943). The two front pouches are Vietnam era medical kits. The two smaller pouches are Vietnam era as well and are for single pistol magazines. The canteen and cover are WWII issue. All of this equipment was used by the US Army.

**The grenade is an authentic WWII Mk2 fragmentation grenade; it’s real, but inert**

That’s pretty much it. Thank you all for your encouraging comments and outstanding support. It took three weeks of 4 hour days to get this far and I would guess another 20 or so hours before it’s 100% complete. Questions or suggestions are always welcome, so feel free to let me know what you think.

Holy Sh*t! That is an amazing costume Multi! I didn't know that you were making one. Kudos for spending so much time on making the costume. People spend money on these sort of outfits, and they wind up looking like they're wearing a costume. You make you're own, and it looks like you're wearing a living thing. A product of your time, heart, and effort, put into lifeless objects in order to make them feel alive. Well done! Very well done!

I never criticize peoples costumes, as so every artist that draws the character is different and makes him their own. That costume rocks though if I could make a number 21 costume with as much detail as your Cap. I would do it.

this is without a doubt a costume worth twenty SHOUT outs. you really did your research and i am astounded at the end result.
if you ever make it to a comic-con, go in that and see how many jaws drop in awe.
(although security might recommend that you leave the grenade at home.)

Well done! Looks great.

...but, Cap has never worn "bell bottoms" ,well maybe as Nomad, but that was the 70's....

They are actually "buccaneer boots", long high boots where the tops are rolled down. Ok, I'll quit picking nits...again great job on the outfit!

Multi@ this is the ultimate costume for the
ULTIMATE reason! America is the greatest and
most free country on earth! It's not perfect
but it's here 'cause of the dedicated men and
women in uniform who lay down their lives for
the rest of us!

My dad was in a war, my uncle died in a war
and my nephew served his country out of
pride of his granddad and grand uncle! I
tried to enlist but they wouldn't take me
'cause I have foot problems but I would've
if I could've! I love my country irregardless
what my leaders do!

Thank you for making this costume! It's so good
Marvel should rent it from you to use in the
Cap movie! This is what is called a costume with
a REAL SOUL of it's own! I salute you my friend!

Great costume and great story. Although I'm not an American I am facinated how the great blue masked Avenger can be feasible during World War II. Except for the helmet, mask and shield that's how I imagined a realistic Captiain America would be particularly the pants and military boots-- really hate Cap's Midieval Boots. But what's more outstanding is how you were able to come up with a story that really makes sense-- how can a colorful and iconic costume exist in a middle of a war. As mentioned in the 80s Capt America movie one must be very patriotic and has a terrible sense of camouflage to wear such costume. Your story prove them otherwise and has even provided depth and real purpose for Cap during WW II. He is more than "super " soldier. He was a hero and leader that deserves to be called a Captain. Congratulations! Your creativity, patriotism and hard work is admirable and I hope hollywood notices it adopts your story and pay you back.

Great costume man, really well done, one of the best personally made I've seen.

Things I would do to improve it, don't have everything seem so clean, bang up the shield shave some of the paint off, make it look like you just got out of battle. Could be fun to make everything dirty, scratched, banged up and all that jazz.

MULTI: As I've said before this is really, really awesome! Its obvious you put not only a hell of a lot of time into this but an unbelievable amount of effort as well. Great work man!

One quick thing though - I always thought that this costume was actually his official WWII outfit given to him by the governemnt (as seen in Ultimate Avengers #2) rather than stuff he scavenged!? However, I actually prefer your idea that it was stuff he picked up and found on the battlefield - with this the Ultimate style costume that probably makes more sense!

But who cares about that - this is stil [frick]ing brilliant! :)
DDD
DDD - 11/3/2009, 4:35 AM
Josh the first outfit he had was way back in the
40's when Cap first began, even before there was
a Marvel Comics that was started by Stan Lee! It
was called Timely comics when it began.

It was the traditional suit with the corsair
boots and the tights! But curiously the shield
on the cover of the very first issue of Captain
American was precisely Multi@'s shield! How cool
is that!
