THE FANTASTIC FOUR: Rumored Details On Alternate Universe Setting & Franklin Richards' Surprising Introduction

Some new The Fantastic Four plot rumors are doing the rounds online, and they relate to the reboot's alternate universe setting and the birth of Reed and Sue's son, Franklin...

Yesterday, Marvel Studios released a new promo poster for The Fantastic Four. The artwork gave us a first look at Johnny Storm in full "flame on" mode as the Human Torch, but it may have also provided a big hint about the movie's setting.

A recent rumor claimed that the MCU reboot would actually take place in an alternate universe, and the city's skyline featured on the poster would seem to confirm that this story will not be playing out in any recognizable timeline. Now, thanks to Can We Get Some Toast, we may have a little more to go on.

According to the scooper, The Fantastic Four takes place in a retro-futuristic universe. It's not clear if this world is simply inspired by the '60s or the movie is actually set in the past, but the Space Race is said to be a big "inspiration," so it may end up being the former.

Another recent report claimed that Reed and Sue's children will be introduced in the film, and CWGST believes Sue will be pregnant when we meet her, and will later give birth to Franklin Richards... in space!

This seems like a very deliberate alteration of the character's origin, and may have something to do with the news that Julia Garner will play the Shalla-Bal version of the Silver Surfer, who existed in a timeline where Franklin Richards was Galactus (long story).

Galactus has been confirmed as the main villain, but no actor is currently in talks for the part. Last we heard, Javier Bardem was said to be the "top choice" to play the Eater of Worlds, but it was noted that scheduling conflicts may prevent him from signing on. Antonio Banderas was also a rumoured.

The movie stars Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Punisher, The Bear) as Ben Grimm, aka the Thing.

Kevin Feige has also confirmed that this will not be another origin story for the super-team.

“A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?” he said in a 2022 interview, comparing this new take on the heroes to Marvel Studios' pact with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the MCU. “We’ve set a very high bar for ourselves with bringing that to the screen.”

Matt Shakman will direct the movie. Production is expected to get underway this summer, and the film is set to bow on July 25, 2025.

If Galactus does eat their world and they end up in Universe 616, It would be interesting for them to discover their variants were involved in a fatal space mission. This would allow them to exist in Universe 616 without have multiple variants of themselves running around.

@SonOfAGif - good point!

@SonOfAGif - That is a great idea. Only thing that would bother me is that Marvel would likely play-up that replacement angle moving forward a little too much.

@SonOfAGif - wouldn’t the universes collapse with each other.

@TheSuperMex - Which would lead into Secret Wars with Galactus being involved and their Dr. Doom whom they thought they left behind sitting at the center of Battleworld.

@SonOfAGif - That's too much of a good idea, the writers they hire wouldn't come up with something that involves thinking or planning a good story.

@SonOfAGif - Since the February 14th announcement, I've been assuming this was an alternate reality Fantastic Four. Even the photo released w/HERBIE made it seem that reality would be retro-futuristic. And the movie is supposed to be filmed in a different filmmaking style, probably based on the decade its set in. Matt Shakman probably was hired based on his ability to adapt WandaVision across the decades.

But with all that said about this movie being in a different reality and moving into the 616 by the end of the film, I hadn't considered the 616 variants. So yeah, the 616 counterparts dying in a fatal space accident would explain why there wouldn't be 2 versions of Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben running around.

I believe the first half of the Fantastic Four film will be idyllic as we explore their utopian world. But the second half will be darker when that retro-futuristic paradise is upended by the arrival of Galactus. I've never bought into Galactus being defeated by the FF in their FIRST film. It makes sense Galactus is victorious to prove how deadly a character he is. If this was building towards Galactus attacking Earth in a future film, I would be hesitant about the alternate reality idea. But instead, Marvel Studios seems to be going all in and telling the first meeting between the Fantastic Four and Galactus from Fantastic Four #48-50. But this time, it doesn't end well for this Earth or HERBIE. The little robot probably goes out in a blaze of glory.

@Gizmoduck - It makes the most sense though. The difference being that Rick deliberately seeks out universes where he can replace his variant. This version of Reed wouldn't know about the Multiverse until he begins trying to find ways to save his planet. Ultimately the Fantastic 4 would fail and he successfully opens a wormhole for he and his family to escape as they watch their world get devoured. But when he arrives in Earth 616, He discovers that this new universe also has a Galactus and a Herald (Norin Rad) and when Secret Wars comes around, We learn that Reed's (Pascal) Dr. Doom survived the destruction of their earth and is sitting at the center of Battleworld.
