28 WEEKS LATER Director In Talks To Helm Disney's Live-Action Remake Of THE SWORD IN THE STONE

Disney has enlisted Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) to direct the planned live-action remake of their classic animated take on Arthurian Legend, The Sword in the Stone. More past the jump...

In addition to their Merlin origin movie - which may end up being Ridley Scott's next project - Disney has a live-action adaptation of The Sword in the Stone in the works, and THR is now reporting that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in talks to direct.

Game of Thrones writer/producer Bryan Cogman penned the script, which has Brigham Taylor (The Jungle Book) on board as producer.

The original 1963 animated adventure took a lighthearted, musical approach to the legend of King Arthur and Excalibur, and if Disney's previous live-action remakes are any indication, this version will most likely aim for a similar tone - although something like that would definitley be a big departure for Fresnadillo.

What do you make of this news? Be sure to sound off in the usual place.

Interesting that they're tackling this. All recent King Arthur movies(King Arthur 2004, Legend of the Sword, and I'll even include the last Transformers), haven't exactly lit the box office on fire.

@JoeInTheBox - Well they did all suck.

@TheUnworthyThor - But it's not even like fans of King Arthur, even turned out on the opening weekends to even check it out either. It's just a general disinterest.

@JoeInTheBox - Okay, and how do you know this? Guy Ritchie's movie looked NOTHING like any other King Arthur before it. It was marketed poorly and WB knew it had a dud before it hit theaters. So, "It's just a general disinterest" is a big assumption created by you.

Personally, I would love to see Sword in the Stone made into a live action. It was one of the best things to come out Disney. Take that, sprinkle in some Excalibur and you have one helluva film.

@FrobisherSays - Obviously, it's an assumption, it's my opinion. I'm just saying, where was the trend where King Arthur movies were huge?

Let's go back further, First Knight(1995) worldwide gross of $137m. Excalibur(1981) total domestic gross $35m. The animated The Sword in the Stone, including the theatrical re-release $22m worldwide total.

Am I saying, no one is interested in King Arthur? Obviously not, there is an interest, but on par with Disney's recent choices for live action adaptations? Far from it. It's probably more niche interest than anything, somewhere around the live action of Pete's Dragon($143m worldwide gross). Do I want to see a good The Sword in the Stone live action movie? Without a doubt.

@JoeInTheBox - I see what you're saying about the other films, but I contest that if done right then wow it could be fun.

You're definitely right about live action adaption choices, though. It's definitely a weird choice considering the library they have to choose from.

and Disney is gearing up to make another 900 million with this one as well.

I wonder if this movie will connect to Ridley Scott's Merlin saga

@greyjedi - I wondered that too. Be a nice little connection.

@greyjedi - I doubt it, this is pretty much The Once and Future King before it gets all serious.

Or another flop.

@Battabing - I don’t know if I would really call it a flop, all things considered it probably ended up making Disney a small profit. It sure wasn’t the BFG.

Very nice...he did a solid job with 28 weeks later, even though it kind of went away from the horror that the first one had, but still good.

On that topic, Danny Boyle needs to hurry up on that 3rd 28 film...need a good zombie movie.

Great decision by Disney to make this live action! One of, if not the best version of this story. The live action wizard battle should be a spectacle for sure.

The Once and Future King / Sword in the stone has been begging for a real adaptation for a LOOONG time. And the animated sword in the stone is good, but has room for improvement in a live action format.

Probably my fave Disney movie growing up. That and Robin Hood. I'd throw Jungle Book and Peter Pan as my 2nd faves.

I’m actually okay with this. This genre is a classic, and there haven’t been enough movies like this recently.

And I never watch game of thrones. So I’m really craving a decent sword and monster movie.

Oh lotr. I miss you so.
