In an excerpt from this interview, Saldana is asked about working with James Cameron on Avatar and J.J. Abrams on Star Trek.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: Having worked with J.J. Abrams on Star Trek and James Cameron on Avatar, I wonder if there’s a way to compare and contrast the two of them as filmmakers.

ZOE SALDANA: It’s like comparing every actor or every writer. People are going to be different. They’re both special for being authentic. J.J. is known and there is an essence to him, and there’s a James Cameron essence. I will say that they did meet and I was sort of their connecting point. It was just amazing, because they’re both very much fans of the other. Jim definitely surprised me. He was shooting one day on the set and he said, “I have a surprise for you,” and there was J.J. and J.J. — you should have seen his face. He was so happy to be there as a filmmaker and a fan of Jim. They were both talking and Jim was pretty much putting in a good word for me, and J.J. was, like, “You don’t have to sell me. I’m already sold on Zoe. I want her for the part [of Uhura]. She doesn’t want to do it.” Jim looked at me and said, “What? You don’t want to do it?” I said, “That’s not what I said,” it was just very funny. I was hesitant of Star Trek for a slight second for the same way that J.J. was hesitant to direct. It was stepping into these big shoes that already existed since before I was born, and there was a real fear of failing the fans.

O.K. I have a statement to make about the beautiful Zoe Saldana after reading the article over at Earth's Mightest. Now let me preface this with my own declaration I am not hung up on race in any fashion but it irks me when people go out of there way to clarify someone's background ethnicity wise which has nothing to do with race and somehow attempt to deny the fact that this persons racial persuasion is anything other than what it is. Bottom line Zoe Saldana is Black she says she's a Black woman what is the big freakin deal? She looks black she's not simply "dark" as some has said. Black or African Decendant people live in the Dominican Republic and Pureto Rico.. So why is white America so hung up on racial labels? She's beautiful, talented and a Black Woman! Simple and Plain..

Would any of you guys deny her performance in Avatar or Star Trek and how beautiful she is simply because you can't accept she's a black woman?

Who's not accepting her as a black woman? I merely quoted from an official bio. She's a beautiful woman who caught my eye the second she appeared in Star Trek and made the role her own. Nothing at all to do with skin color.

@ ScorpioEagle1, its human for us to put a name on everything. Its how we communicate. A lot of people idenify with what back ground they come from. People are proud of the their race, heritage, ethnicity etc. Technically like her Iam mixed & that's what I identify with. Race only becomes a problem when one puts theirs in front of any other or u know there is some injustice that has happen to them in the past. Just to give u an example, Iam black, white, & native american. Iam proud of my heritage but as u probably know if your state side there would be some blotches on all sides with this background.

But u are right she is fine, a good actor.

Spock.. well put and I totally agree the US is so behind the times.. I wish we actually did live in a a Star Trek era where people are measured by the content of there character and not there race of ethnicity.. One Love!
