John Barrowman is back!...maybe? But before discussing Malcolm Merlyn lets hear what "Arrow" producer Marc Guggenheim had to say on returning guest star Kelly Hu who portrays Chyna White. Said Guggenheim, "Kelly Hu is absolutely coming back. She comes back in episode 2. She not only comes back, but we were dead-set on not just bringing back China White, but bringing back China White and showing her in a new way and with a new dimension than just what we did last year. There's no point in bringing her back, just to repeat same-old, same-old. We do one new scene where you go, 'Ooh! That's a China White we didn't see last year.'" It was previously confirmed that White will be teaming up with the Bronze Tiger played by Michael Jai White. Could the two eventually end up on A.R.G.U.S.' Suicide Squad which has also been confirmed?
As for Barrowman? "Part of the enjoyment of Season 2 for us is how do you combine the old -- not the old -- but the Season 1 villains with the new Season 2 villains," said a cryptic Guggenheim. Continuing on Barrowman specifically, "We've confirmed that John Barrowman is coming back. We are a show that does flashbacks. I don't think it's spoiling anything to say that John Barrowman's scenes will be with Stephen [Amell]." The show has quickly developed a reputation for turning fan expectations based on comic book canon on their head so it's safe to say that while Guggenheim only confirmed flashbacks for Merlyn, don't write off the possibility that the Dark Archer survived his season finale confrontation with 'The Hood' (soon to be rechristened "Green Arrow" in season 2).

"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine."
