WonderCon '13: ARROW Executive Producer On Dick Grayson, Season 4 And More

Highlights:
-Guggenheim talks about the origin of Green Arrow as a Batman ripoff
- Tommy Merlyn will have to decide if he is his father or his own man moving forward.
- It's never a 'licensing issue', it's an 'apportionment of assets' issue when it comes to using the Bat-family characters. [WB] doesn't want Dick Grayson to appear on Arrow if they're going to [put] Dick Grayson in a movie.
- With the success of the show, producers and writers are now having discussions on multi-year time horizons.
- A meeting has already been held with DC about which DC characters will be appearing in Season Two.
-Quite a bit of Season Two has already been planned. The showrunners know what the season premiere will be, what the midpoint would be and what the season finale would be.
- There's already a storyline for Season 4 and 5 being discussed that's directly inspired by an unspecified comic book story arc.

The below video interview was conducted at WonderCon 2013 with Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim. A LOT of ground was covered, too much to transcribe in one sitting but I've highlighted bits and pieces above and provided a couple of choice quotes below. This is definitely a must-watch for any fan of the show.

With Arrow being The CW's most watched television show, Guggenheim says, "Even if Dick Grayson is not going to appear in episode 201, (producers and writers) can talk about whether Dick Grayson will EVER appear on the show."

The showrunners are giving Batman: The Cult by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson to the writers to read during the hiatus between Season One and Season Two.

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

I didn't think about it before, but it might seem more likely to me that they would have Jason Todd on the show then Dick Grayson.

Nice. One of the rare good Jason Todd-as-Robin stories that fans can actually agree on (poor Jason, no love for him at all).

I love this show, but it is too obvious that they only decided on Green Arrow because he's the closest thing to Batman. I mean the thing with Oliver deciding to wear motorcycle gear instead of his suit was something Batman does all the time.

Love the show, and I guess because of the Justice League and Dark Universe movies, this is the only one we will get for a while (Deadman and Wonder Woman will be movies only). Just looked at the Batman: The Cult book on Amazon, I saw the villain is a charismatic Shaman named Deacon Blackfire. I really hope he turns out to be the one behind the Dark Archer instead of Ra's Al Ghul.

Not sure what is or isnt a joke today. But Warner Bros policies need to change... and once Marvel's SHIELD proves to be successful, then ONCE AGAIN, WB will try and play catch up and MAYBE start putting characters like Nightwing in television.

Its so sad how Marvel has to lead the way. WB forgot about taking risks. The greatest filmmakers TAKE RISKS.

Love this show. This is for DC what EMH was for Marvel and what SHIELD will be. I'm glad they are staying with Oliver and not making it a cameo soaked mess. There is order and balance with the story right now and its great.

Is there a good reason Arrow can't be part of a DC Cinematic Universe? It would be cool to have solo movies for the BIG characters, but then when it comes time to do a Justice League movie they could also pull in B-list characters from TV like Green Arrow. I think it would be pretty sweet.

Arrow is a total rip-off of Nolan's Batman movies. I still like the show, but I think it could've been much more if they kept more of a comic element for the show. I also have a prime example of the rip-off.

LAST WEEKS EPISODE, SALVATION. WHEN DIGGLE ASKED OLLIE IF HE'S "HOODING UP"? OLLIE SAYS, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY? AND HE HOPES ON HIS BIKE TO GO DO DETECTIVE WORK.

IN THE DARK KNIGHT ALFRED ASKS BRUCE, WILL YOU BE WANTING THE BATPOD, SIR? AND BRUCE SAYS, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY, ALFRED? NOT VERY SUBTLE. THE BRUCE GETS INTO THE LAMBORGHINI TO GO DO SOME DETECTIVE WORK.

@superbigguy32

A total rip-off is having 95% of the whole show ripped from Nolan movies.

Those one lines that they do in these episodes is so little to the entire episode that they are have no impact at this show being its own identity.

@gmoney0505, how isn't it a rip-off? From the first episode when Oliver gets his secret hideout by coming down a rope, the tone of the series, he's a secret a$$hole by day and crimefighter at night. I could go on and on about it. Bit like I said I still enjoy the show, but really and truthfully the thing that saves the show is all the surprise appearances by DC characters. Everyone hates on Smallville like that was such a terrible show. But why did it last for 10 seasons. I still watch reruns like they are new. Because the show was enjoyable. But I'm rambling too much.

@MarkJulian I thought I was the only one to catch that. I said damn that's from The Dark Knight.

The Gallows plan, the Narrows plan...Vertigo, Scarecrow...I can't remember anything else but we all know there are similarities WAY too close to Nolans Batman films. This show lacks that POP! that FLASH! to kick the show to the next level. It's boring to watch because the plot is messy and moves so slow. Between figuring out what Olivers mom is really up to, what the "list" really means, the subway map, what happenend to his stepdad, the Roy Harper story,his time on the island, the crap with Deathstroke, the story behind Merlyn and being the Dark Archer and in and out relationships and the limited use of arrows. The Green Arrow in the comics had a shyt load of arrows (that were alot less cheesy and more believable than the giant glove) that could be used in the show to show us some variety. I get it, he can jump across buildings and not break his leg. Stop telling everyone your secret identity and let's move on with the show. I like it, obviously I watch it every week, but it's time to move things forward.

@superbig
Like Bruce is the only one to ever come down on a rope. That's a super similarity right there.

Like I said those are so minute and have no impact on the other 50 or more things that differentiate this show. If you gonna let one thing about each episode in which none of them are even a basis of the show ruin it for you then you might need to stop watching tv altogether because alot of shows rip from other shows or movies even as small or minute as those are.

superbigguy32

@gmoney like I said I ENJOY THE SHOW but the similarities are too damn close. YES a lot of shows rip from other shows also but damn it so noticeable. Even one of the showrunners said in an interview that Nolan's Batman were influences for their show. Now because of Nolan every single CBM that comes out now every producer or director is say we want our movie to be darker, and more gritter like The Dark Knight. Just make a good film.

@MarkJulian I know SARCASM really well, but I can also get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.

"Arrow is a total rip-off of Nolan's Batman movies. I still like the show, but I think it could've been much more if they kept more of a comic element for the show. I also have a prime example of the rip-off. "

No, more like heavily influenced by Mike Grell's Green Arrow run, which was VERY grounded akin to the way Nolan interpreted Batman. They were quite similar in how they approached things (Isolating the main character from the larger DC character set, the idea character code names spoken aloud being avoided in favor of the actual character's real identity, heavy limitations on powers, with powered characters not using them when appearing in the story etc).

"LAST WEEKS EPISODE, SALVATION. WHEN DIGGLE ASKED OLLIE IF HE'S "HOODING UP"? OLLIE SAYS, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY? AND HE HOPES ON HIS BIKE TO GO DO DETECTIVE WORK."

"IN THE DARK KNIGHT ALFRED ASKS BRUCE, WILL YOU BE WANTING THE BATPOD, SIR? AND BRUCE SAYS, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY, ALFRED? NOT VERY SUBTLE. THE BRUCE GETS INTO THE LAMBORGHINI TO GO DO SOME DETECTIVE WORK."

I got a laugh out of that, but to be fair, where do you think Nolan lifted it from? It's something Bruce has done more than once in the comics.

". Everyone hates on Smallville like that was such a terrible show. But why did it last for 10 seasons."

Because even after CW starved it of it's budget as ratings fell more and more on it's prime weeknights, the show made money hand over fist on DVD sales. WB saw it as a profitable endeavor to keep alive because of that and continued producing it under the reduced budget (with CW getting it out of the way and kicking it to Fridays to free up prime advertiser dollar space for higher rated earners).

@yingyangpalms

You barely read a thing I said if you think superbigguy32 and I are arguing the same point. And he's actually on your side about Smallvile.

And not long after Glover and then Rosenbaum left the show, the ratings began to slide, with each decrease increasing network worry. There's a reason there was so much drama behind the scenes over Millar and Gough stepping down as show runners. They had a very CW friendly aesthetic in terms of keeping the show more TV "character drama" focused and grounded in the character's personal issues vs. catering more heavily toward the comic friendly crowd.

Miller and Gough wanted to keep the status quo, the opposition wanted to begin the final push toward developing Clark into Superman and integrating more DC characters (problematic as CW was showing waning interest in genre television, with Smallville and Supernatural being the only real WB carryovers that maintained ratings power among the demographic you mentioned).

The show's ratings weren't justifying it's price tag and it was actually considered for cancellation on the network front. Luckily Warner Bros. saw Smallville as a solid earner on the DVD sets that more than offset it's failing in the ratings. Between the budget decrease, followed by a move to the Friday Death Slot, it managed to hang on for a tenth and final season (which was approved contingent on it absolutely being the final one).

I get that you're a fan of the show, (I watched and enjoyed most of it overall) but it was at best, a series that averages out to good rather than great, and that has more to do with showrunner drama than anyone on the show itself. It simply hit a few setbacks, which caused it to drag and bunt more than it should have. Creative indecision and budget cuts can do that. I don't remotely hate it and I certainly don't have issues with it because of Tom Welling's "chikc following" .

I'm going to pretend that last part is an April Fool's joke and give your intellect the benefit of the doubt.
