Green Lantern - (Blu-ray) review : How the lights went out!

My hands quivered with anticipation as I opened my copy of Green Lantern: The Movie on Blu-ray. I had not seen it in the theatres and I had ignored the press and buzz on it, to keep my review untainted. But was it worth the wait?

Green Lanterns, the most bad@ss space cops to have ever been written in the pages of comics. Hey we are talking Hal Jordan, but is Ryan Reynolds worthy for the part? I thought Ryan did a good job as the cocky test pilot, but found him a bit lacking sometimes as Green Lantern. Yet I plodded along to see how this movie would turn out.

Now the villain of this movie is Parallax. I was okay with it being a corrupted Guardian, but a (big moving space cloud, with a face) not so much. I also was vastly annoyed with Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond, while his acting was great. The whole “Jock” vs. “Geek” for the girl was kind of lame. It also did not help that a writer thought Parallax would infect someone and make their head swell like a watermelon. The final battle of “Angry Space Cloud” and his minion “Telepathic Watermelon- Head” against Green Lantern, Hal Jordan was a bit painful to watch and really brought a sour end to what could have been a great film.

I know that producers were hoping to have Green Lantern face off against Sinestro in the next film, but they really could have had them duke it out here. I did not like the fact that Sinestro did not even fight alongside Hal at the movie’s end…LAME!

If I would have written this flick, I would have infected Sinestro and had him turn to the “Yellow” leaving a void for Hal to fill as the unexpected leader of the Green Lantern Corps, instead of filming the misadventures of “Angry Space Cloud” and his minion “Telepathic Watermelon- Head”. The writers had a great villain at their disposal and chose to blow the opportunity. They wrote in Sinestro creating a yellow ring and then dropped the whole thing. Wow, did someone forget basic plotting structures?

I know, I sound a bit harsh but this fan-boy was a bit disappointed. The movie’s special effects and the planet of “Oa” were visually fantastic to see, it was these elements that kept me hanging around through the film. The recent animated film portrayals of Green Lantern are far superior and should be watched instead of this lightless movie. Think I was wrong? Do you concur...let me know?
