Green Lantern Is Tracking For $60M Opening Weekend; Reviews Embargoed Until June 16?

Martin Campbell's Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds is set to hit theatres this week, but we still haven't seen any reviews. Well, it looks like they are embargoed until June 16, plus first reports suggest a $60M+ opening weekend.

I bet you've been wondering why we haven't seem any reviews for Warner Bros. and Martin Campbell's upcoming comic book adaptation Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong and Blake Lively. That's because all reviews are embargoed until June 16. Yes, no reviews until only one day before the film is released. In many cases this is definitely not a good sign and who knows what are the reasons for doing that. This could change, but it won't matter that much since the film is coming out this week.

Plus, I came across this report over at The Motley Fool (Investing Community), about the recent tracking for upcoming films. They go into details about superhero adaptations and their box-office success. One of the things they said about Green Lantern is this:

"A successful debut for Green Lantern would give DC the credibility needed to build franchises around other Justice League names. What would a successful debut look like? Right now, $60 million seems like all that we investors can hope for. Yet that may not be good enough. According to The New York Times, Warner has spent close to $300 million producing and marketing Green Lantern. DC and Warner Bros. wouldn't spend that much if they didn't believe Ryan Reynolds' Emerald Knight would prove to be as attractive to this summer's moviegoers as Robert Downey Jr.'s Golden Avenger was in 2008."

There you go. I'm pretty sure Green Lantern won't be a a box-office bomb or anything like that. $60 million opening weekend is pretty good. Take First Class for example. Some fans are saying how it's not doing well, and yet it made more than $220M in one week. Sure, it's not a huge hit, but it is definitely enough for a possible sequel. And it only started playing worldwide. So, what do you think about all this?

That won't happen, you have so many other blockbusters surrounding this movie, before and after. Will debut at number 1 but not open with that much. High hopes for this movie though :)

For any normal movie, a $60 million dollar opening would be great, but this is a big summer event blockbuster. Before Iron Man, a B List Superhero opening to $60 million would be great. But Iron Man changed that, and Green Lantern hopes to immitate that (similar marketing blitzkreig, Ryan Reynolds being marketed like Robert Downey Jr.)

The biggest diffrence and thing going against Green Lantern from Iron Man is that Iron Man opened the first week of May, the first big summer blockbuster event after months of lackluster films. Thor already filled that spot. Green Lantern comes out in the middle of June, meaning it is going up agaist a lot of summer films and basically has to make it's money now or fall (comes out the week before Cars 2 and two weeks before Transformers: Dark of the Moon, two series with built in audiences). Warner's hopes to repeat Batman Begins again by opening it the same weekend, but the Incredible Hulk opened the same week that Green Lantern opens to, and theses two green superheroes might me the fate.

I hope it does well, but some peoples expectations will get to high. Over by a dollar, your king of the world, under by a dollar, it's the end of the world. Hopefully Green Lantern gets good reviews (but the embargo has me worried) and has legs at the boxoffice (like X-Men: First Class). Looks badass and i will be there opening day with a bunch of friends to see it.

I think $60 million+ wouldn't be bad. I mean, look at Thor: an unknown comic hero beyond the fanboy base, but it ended up making $66 million in its first week out and has past $400 million worldwide. And Green Lantern seems to be a little more well known than Thor (probably a bit lower than what Iron Man was before 2008), so it should make a similar profit.

I've actually found that, so far this summer, Rotten Tomatoes pre-release "Want to see" rankings to align well with the openings of the film... mostly in the number of people who vote (seeing as most anyone who bothers to vote wants to see the film in question, hence they all have high-90% ranges there.) Thor had over 60,000 votes by the time it opened to $65m. I believe the X-men were in the high 40,000s. Super-8 was somewhere right around 30,000. Currently Green Lantern is at 51,453. Unlike Thor and X-men, it hasn't been increasing all that much leading up to release.

For comparison, Captain America is at 49,431 with well over a month (and the majority of its advertising) still to go. I expect interest in that one to rise quite a bit.

Harry Potter is the big leader of the summer with a current vote tally of 105,512.

Exactly. Holding reviews until the day before release is always a sign that a film is destined for a fail. That seems to be the norm.

And Blake Lively is taking a pounding over at DListed whenever she appears. Trouble in paradise. And I was gonna give Green Lantern chance

I don't really give too much thought to reviews but it does concern me when people are told that they can't release them.

I also note that this is quite clearly the most expensive comic book film of the summer. We know that the original budget got pumped up some more in post production in order to get the effects done on time and to quality, and WB has really opened the money vaults on advertising this thing.

Honestly, they don't care about making their money back as long as they establish a legitimate foot in the door for a new franchise (or at least leave open the possibility for "The Flash" and "JLA".) Major studios don't make money back on theatrical releases... even moderately priced ones. They hit the black well after they've left theaters.

Review embargoes are usually a bad sign.

$60 million aint bad, but Thor did $65 mil to open. Keep in mind that Thor had a $150 million budget. GL has a budget of $200 mil. It could make $200 million which is more than Thor but still technically bomb. Much like Superman Returns.

This may be a sign of over saturation this year with so many mainstream comic book movies coming out. Four in the course of a few months. I'm definetly going to go see it and not pass judgement until I see it. It may be that Warners feels that the reviews for Green Lantern will give away something big that they want true fans to find out on their own.

(I know that is a tad optimistic but what else do we have besides hope.)

I do cringe everytime I see the trailer and Ryan Reynolds yells at the end of the Lantern Oath. For some reason it sounds goofy and doesn't hit the mark. I have a sad feeling the rest of the movie may be that way but we will find out Friday at midnight.

The embargo could mean that the reviews will be bad, but they're not withholding the film from reviewers until the last minute, which is the sure sign of a stinker. Keeping reviews off until Thursday lets them freeze critical word-of-mouth where it is long enough to get people to make plans on seeing it this weekend. "I heard people on twitter say it was great!"

Plus, they know that critics jazzed about the film will drop word that it's good beforehand, but fewer people who thought the film was average or nothing special will bother to leak their opinions prior to their actual reviews.

If you can't go to Rotten Tomatoes and get a consensus (which might not end up being bad... just average), then the mere rumor that it's good is what they're hoping people will go by. If word of this embargo begins to be a story in itself, suggesting the film stinks, then look to WB to suddenly allow reviews much sooner.

Personally, going by the buzz I hear, a lot of people want to see this...from kids to business people to soccer moms, etc. I've heard kids reciting the oath in a supermarket! Add in Wed/Thurs sneaks and 3D prices and it would not surprise me if it got an opening AT LEAS in the 80 million range. More people know who GL is than THOR or IRON MAN. SAfter all, GL has been around for around 60 years! Even my grandfather knows the name...though he doesn't get out to movie theaters!

Just because reviews will open up until the sixteenth doesn't really mean a whole lot. It doesn't mean the critics will slaughter it or that they will love it. Its the fact that its the company's decision to do so. So don't get carried away.

They wait for the reviews due to all the crazy fanboys posting spoilers online and giving the movie away before it's released. Especially on this site spoilers get out within reviews and spread to other articles through comments and I don't want to know about it until its released.

@WarRocketAjax Who are you talking to?

I studied film in college and worked in the biz years ago. I know what I'm talking about and have said for many months now this movie will not be the huge hit that was expected by GL fans. They'll be lucky to make $150 mil this summer. Those saying $300 mil domestic were insane.

Holding back reviews is nearly the same as not screening early for critics. Sometimes it doesn't mean anything, but in this case I feel the movie is likely very cheesy and appeals only to fans which is not enough to make a huge profit.

The fact is there's too many movies this summer. Pirates underperformed compared to it's predecessors. Kung Fu Panda too. Cars 2 will likely not the typical hit Pixar is accustomed to. Thor was about where I thought and X-Men First Class is close though behind what I figured. Captain America will probably be a $140-160 million movie which is okay but not what Marvel was hoping for.

The only sure $300 million hit this summer is Harry Potter and Transformers. They are critic proof.

3-"I KNOW RIGHT!!!"

for a budget of $200 mil the film should atleast make $500+ to be called successful as half of the revenue goes to the theaters.

Will it sustain given Cars 2,Transformers 3 in close proximity?
as per boxofficemojo's prediction: $130 mill in USA and $150 foreign.

I feel pity ,poor DC fans, they will all be silent and mute with their tails between their legs when GL bombs.

I like everything about GL the movie except :
1. WB trying to copy RDJ and Iron Man
2. The comic tone and cheeky dialogues, as SinisterUrge Says Moviegoers will come looking for something Dark and serious from WB/DC stable, nothing like Martin Campbell's GL.
3. RYAN REYNOLDS!!!! Sam Worthington should have been Hal.

Of all the CBMs this year this is the one that is hardest to please mainstream viewers and reviewers with. Knowing that reviewers may be comparing it to the competition already in theaters and not be totally down with the "Star Wars-ripoff" science fiction elements that really arn't ripoffs but original elements to the comic may mean more negative reviews for this movie than a typical comic book movie.
Kryptonman87
Kryptonman87 - 6/13/2011, 11:20 AM
I really don't see ANY problem with reviews waiting to hit till the day before. Look at "Thor", "Hangover 2", and several other movies. Here are movies that got bad reviews, saying that the movies were too quick, poorly constructed stories, and other such comments. The New York Times review of Thor bluggoned it, but fans here on cbm and elsewhere loved the movie and it's made a great amount of money during its run in theaters.

I think by not having reviews come out so soon, they're letting people decide for themselves if they want to see it, not base their decision on if some hater writes a half-assed review and bashes the movie.

I mean, come on, guys. It's a comic book movie. We should be glad we're getting something other than Batman and Superman from DC. Plus, I think the parts after Hal gets the ring, especially on Oa, look fairly dark and serious. Plus, from everything I've seen, this movie looks very true to the "Green Lantern: Secret Origins" storyline
Kryptonman87
Kryptonman87 - 6/13/2011, 11:25 AM
Just go and see the damn movie. What's the worst case scenario? You spend 10 bucks to see it in 2D and at the very worst, the movie meets your low expectations or it blows you away with a great story and awesome effects.

It can't be worse than X-Men Last Stand or X-Men Origins: Wolverine, of Ang Lee's Hulk. Stop hating on something you haven't seen or given a proper chance, that's all I'm saying.
