James Gunn Reiterates That GOTG Is Not An AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Prequel

James Gunn made some interesting comments some time ago about keeping his Guardians of the Galaxy movies separate from the Avengers films, and has once again stated that the 2014 hit and its sequel isn't about leading towards Infinity War.

Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn has previously spoken about the 2017 sequel not being weighed-down by ties to the two-part Avengers: Infinity War, and during an interview with The Q&A Podcast said that the Guardians films are designed for building the cosmic part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not connecting. "The last thing I said was something about how the Guardians, we really are mostly focused on creating the Guardians as their own separate universe, creating the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe." He once again stated, "it isn't all about leading towards Avengers. We're not subservient to The Avengers. Whether or not at some point, some Guardians and some Avengers meet up and meet somewhere in the world, whether it's two years from now, three years from now, four years from now, fifteen years from now… I'm not going to say. But Guardians of the Galaxy does not exist as a prequel to Avengers 3 and 4. They have their own thing that they're involved in. They have their own mythos that they're involved in. They have their own stories that are equally important." The appearance of Thanos and an Infinity Stone in Guardians certainly suggests links with Infinity War, but Gunn does seem pretty adamant about crafting his own part of the galaxy. What do you think? Do you want to see the rag-tag team of A-holes cross over with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, or should they be kept seperate in the MCU?

It's a sequel with some seeds planted in for future MCU movies. Shouldn't be that hard for people to figure it out.

He's gonna have to face the fact that his movies are in fact a part of Marvel's grand scheme.

Technically every movie that has an infinity stone and/or Thanos looking to acquire them is a prequel to Infinity War...

So you're telling me it's a prequel. Cool.

Why would people think it's an Infinity War prequel in the first place?

It's generally assumed that every Marvel feature furthers the cinematic storyline, but to think it's going to be a blatant prequel/set-up to Infinity War is a little narrowminded. I would hope that Marvel learned from their mistakes with The First Avenger that this type of approach is more distracting than beneficial.

I had a really long, thought out comment about how Guardians is it's own film but Gunn needs to acknowledge that at the same time it is part of the MCU, Chrome shat itself and I lost it, so I'll condense it.
Guardians was it's own film, just like The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 3 were but at the same time, with Marvel's set up almost everything is leading up to something bigger.
Phase 1 led up to Avengers, Phase two has split it's emphasis on Age of Ultron and Infinity War.
Being Marvel's first move into space Guardians was always going to be used to set the stage and tone for what's to come. Gunn seeminky doesn't realise that in something as large as the MCU the set up is often as important as the execution.

Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely connected to the grand scheme of things. Drax, Gamora, Thanos, Nebula, the Collector, Infinity Stones, etc. are sure to have ramifications in the Infinity War movies. However, just like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy is its own mini sub franchise, and should explore Marvel cosmic further. Same with Doctor Strange and magic.

He seems to be trying so hard to distance himself from the rest of the MCU... how the hell is Guardians not a prequel to Infinity War smh.
ScarletWarlock
ScarletWarlock - 12/22/2014, 2:58 PM
It is most likely going to happen, Adam Warlock, Drax, and Gamora all make appearances in Infinity Gauntlet(haven't entirely read infinity war), and this is before the movie version came to fruition in the comics, so it would be stupid to just leave behind Star Lord, Rocket and Groot. Also, I think he knows it's going to happen, he's just playing coy while at the same time trying to defend his franchise and not act like it's just a time slot for bigger things to happen.

It's important that the movies stand on their own while seeding future things. The last time we got a movie full of set up, we ended up with Iron Man 2.

It seems like most of you guys who are commenting are mistaking his point that the Guardians are meant to stand on their own without relying on the Avengers. Yes they will meet up eventually, but that expectation shouldn't be what's driving the story here.
OneBadDay
OneBadDay - 12/22/2014, 3:00 PM
Thor was the first glimpse we got of Marvel cosmic, Guardians just expanded it greatly.

dirtydanwojo - 12/22/2014, 3:00 PM
I feel like he's not saying they won't meet, just that he's not writing Guardians 2 as a direct lead-in, like it won't end with "we need to go to Earth and stop Thanos!"

James Gunn wanted Stan Lee in one of the Collector's boxes and considered his head being decapitated in the explosion:

Nickk - Gunn skimping out on Nova still grinds my gears! He better make up for it by making the Nova Corps badass in GotG 2. I want to see the power of the Nova force kicking ass and what not.

He has a point. I mean, we don't consider Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, or Thor: The Dark World prequels all because they have Infinity Stones in them, but I think the people who say (if there are any) this is a prequel get thrown off because this one was also significant to universe by being very blunt and frank with the presence and background of the Infinity Stones.

I just think a prequel is a weird way to see it, for some reason.

I wish this was the stance Marvel took on the Thor films. They're definitely subservient to the Avengers films. Such a waste when the Thor comics have such an amazing and deep lore.
