Dan Akroyd Says The New GHOSTBUSTERS Is Better Than The First Two

As the backlash continues, one of the original film's stars has now spoken up in defense of the Ghostbusters reboot after seeing a test screening of the movie! Is this some more damage control?

There's only three more weeks until the release of the new Ghostbusters film, and it's pretty safe to say the disdain for the film is higher than ever. Despite a vocal outcry from fans, we haven't heard much from the team behind the film aside from director Paul Feig. It was only a few days ago that star Melissa McCarthy finally shared her thoughts on the film's backlash. Now, a star of the original Ghostbusters has taken to social media to defend the film. Dan Akroyd, who played Raymond Stantz in the original and helped create the movie series, viewed the new movie during a test screening, and loves it. In a post on his official Facebook page, Akroyd wrote: "As originator of the original: Saw test screening of new movie. Apart from brilliant, genuine performances from the cast both female and male, it has more laughs and more scares than the first 2 films plus Bill Murray is in it! As one of millions of man-fans and Ray Stantz, I'm paying to see that and bringing all my friends!"

It's been known for a while now that the original surviving cast will be appearing in cameo roles, though not as their original characters. Akroyd's positive comments are not entirely out of left field here, given that he's been pushing for a revamp of the series for years. He also previously praised the decision for an all-female cast, calling it "a beautiful development." What do you think of Akroyd's comments? Are they genuine, or could they be another attempt by Sony to placate the ever-growing animosity? Sound off below!

@auditore - Well... I think we know what relation Dan has with ghosts. It wasnt his protonpack he shot his first ghost with in the first movie..

They're are just some franchises from the 80's that you don't [frick] around with. This being one of them.

Want another example? Karate Kid. Ralph Macchio is one of the worst actors out there...but shit, don't [frick] with it Jackie Chan and Little Will Smith!

It would be like rebooting Ferris Bueller...You must be out yo god damn mind!

@MonsterSquad35 - I've said this before: I believe Ghostbusters deserved a proper sequel, and it could easily be turned into a worthwhile series. This film has shown exactly how it can all go wrong.

Had they attempted a "passing of the torch" film a la Jurassic World or TFA that paid respect to the original actors and story while setting up a new generation with new things, I could easily get behind it, as would most fans.

Instead we get this half-assed (and boy, does it ever look half-assed) film.

After hearing Dan Akroyd's comments, I'm half-willing to give this a shot when it hits Netflix. I like Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon on SNL and I sometimes dig Kristin Wiig. I hope for her sake Leslie Jones is given more to do than just be the loud black lady stereotype, because she is capable of more.

Melissa McCarthy is not my cup of tea. And it seems I am not alone. But there are a lot of people who do enjoy her brand humor, and I don't find her off-putting. Seriously, there are a lot of people who don't think Will Farrell is funny, so I don't know what to say. I am going to wait until I see this before I shun the movie.

Jackie Chan's Karate Kid movie was awful. I mean, it was in China, and he taught Jaden Smith Kung Fu for heaven's sake! That to me was way more offensive to the original material than an all-female reboot of Ghostbusters. The original still exists folks. If this one sucks, they won't make another. If it happens to be funny, then we get a funny movie. Harold Ramus is gone, so unfortunately we will never get a true trilogy. At the end of the day, I say at least wait until you watch it to say it sucks.
