HALLOWEEN KILLS Will Now Debut In Theaters & On Peacock Premium Streaming Service Day-and-Date

Well, here's an unexpected development. Universal has announced that David Gordon Green's Halloween Kills will be debuting simultaneously in theaters and on their Peacock Premium streaming service.

Universal Pictures has announced that David Gordon Green's hotly-awaited horror sequel Halloween Kills is now set to open simultaneously in theaters and on the Peacock Premium streaming service on October 15.

Peacock Premium with ads costs $4.99 per month, while the ad-free Peacock Premium Plus runs $9.99 per month. All Peacock Premium subscribers will be able to watch the film at no extra cost.

It's a somewhat surprising move, especially in the wake of its biggest competition, Sony's Venom: Let There Be Carnage, moving up to October 1 and the box office on an apparent recovery trajectory. But seems to be a decision reached shortly after the film's world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival earlier this week, where it received a decidedly mixed critical reception.

While it's hard to predict how audiences will respond to the film - which by all accounts is a bloodier and more relentless ride than the 2018 installment - it's likely the studio sensed an opportunity to boost the subscriber numbers for their burgeoning streaming platform by bringing arguably the biggest title left on their 2021 release calendar to audiences in theaters and at home on the same day.

Halloween Kills will see the return of Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, with a supporting cast consisting of Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Thomas Mann, Anthony Michael Hall, Kyle Richards, Nancy Stephens, and James Jude Courtney and Nick Castle as Michael Myers.

Hyped. Will probably watch it both ways.

Gives me one reason to hold on to peacock for another month.

@regularmovieguy - I think all those terrible reviews from Venice Film Festival made them decide to release it on both knowing many are not going to show up for a terrible sequel.

Or maybe its because new york and LA are now implementing vaccination card requirements before letting people in. Either way the film is cheap enough to not flop.

@mastakilla39

I think reviews had nothing to do with it. Streaming subscriptions + IP = $$$.

They are doing this to boost Peacock. Halloween is review proof and has been so since the first sequel.

Theaters are just gonna continue to get [frick]ed in the ass. The same day release is BO Suicide but I guess streaming services are more important to these [frick] head studio suits these days. WB is dead to me after TSS and yes I get it shoulda been dead to me long ago but I actually like and appreciate what Hamada is doing empowering creatives.

Michael Myers is going to be pissed. People at Peacock should be on the lookout for anyone wearing a William Shatner mask and RUN the opposite direction! And if they hear John Carpenter on the piano, it might be too late.

@LSHF - why would he?

@TheShape9859 - Because he's always pissed, and looking to kill people. I mean, does he even need any reasons?

To answer your question, my statement is joke based on people involved in making the films getting pissed because the films end up getting streaming on the same days of their theatrical releases, thus arguably loosing money.

Sweet ass. Blame NBC not me because I'll be watching it at home. I'd have been more than willing to pay extra but I'm super sure they need the bump in subs this could bring.

I really think it would have done fine just going to theaters, especially after Candymans reception.

@bobevanz - I'm as much for the theatrical expierence but we are still in a pandemic and many people would rather watch it at home and that's understandable

Spooky Season is coming. What do you guys usually do for Spooky Season? I usually catch at least one horror movie in theaters and go to a Haunted Hayride and Pumpkin picking.
