Thanks to EW, we have our first official look at Paramount's upcoming remake of Pet Sematary via some promo stills.

The novel - which is widely considered to be one of Stephen King's most bone-chilling - focuses on a family who relocate to to the small town of Ludlow, Maine, only for tragedy to strike when youngest son Gage is mowed down by a truck. Mad with grief, Dr. Louis Creed decides to bury the boy in an ancient Native American cemetery (never a good idea) in the hopes of resurrecting him.

Gage does come back, but he takes something with him.

The novel was previously adapted by Paramount as a 1989 feature, but despite a few creepy moments, it never really managed to capture the terrifying tone of the book. Let's hope this new version does a better job.

Check out the images below along with some new details on the movie.

Jud And Ellie

The first image features Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) and little Ellie Creed (Jeté Laurence).

In this take on the story, Ellie is the first to encounter Jud when she inadvertently stumbles upon the titular animal graveyard, completely unaware that there's another, much more sinister cemetery just beyond it.

No Turning Back

Jud and Louis (Jason Clarke) go for a little stroll. Can you guess what's in the bag?

These two become fast friends, but the grieving father soon regrets taking the advice of his lonely old neighbor.

The Creed Family

A happier moment for Ellie, mom Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and Gage (played by twins Hugo and Lucas Lavoie) - though Louis looks like something is on his mind.

The Pet Cemetery

The graveyard of the title is a peaceful place where people bring their deceased pets to lay them to rest, but beyond it is an ancient Mi’kmaq burial ground where things that are gone can sometimes come back.

Church

Bad kitty!

Winston Churchill is Ellie's pet cat, and when he falls victim to the busy motorway in front of The Creed's house, Louis doesn't see the harm in burying him in the dark place Jud tells him about. That's a decision he soon regrets.

Rachel And Gage

Fans of the book and the original movie will recall one of the most terrifying aspects was Rachel's flashback/vision of her sister Zelda, who will also be a part of this new adaptation.

It’s more accurate to the book, I’ll just say that,” co-director Dennis Widmyer reveals. “In the original movie, it’s a 21-year-old guy in drag playing it, and in the book, as you recall, it’s a 10-year-old girl.”

Behind-The-Scenes

Finally, we have a BTS shot of Clarke and Lithgow alongside the film's directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch, who are best known for the 2014 Hollywood horror-satire Starry Eyes.

@Nebula - If winston churchill loves cats, you call the cats a winston churchill!!

@ThePeterCipher - That's like saying "my dog's name is Spick, it's a reference to the Queen".

And yeah, one of her Corgis is actually called Spick. Whatta name.
CaptainElrond

@Nebula - It means little. Cats are higher beings and look down upon other lifeforms, not in curiosity.

Ironic.

@ThePeterCipher - I meant in curiosity. Oh i'm done with this day.

@ThePeterCipher - And I meant it'd be like naming your dog "The Queen" and saying "it's in reference to her dog Spick". Not the other way around.

And actually its in reference to the phrase "Spick and span" since another of the Corgis is called Span.

@Nebula - Nebs..? You haven't watched Fred Gwynne from The Monsters play Jud in Pet Sematary? The book is wicked good. My girls and I love THAT FILM! I am so stoked for this! John Lithgow!!! I grew up in a very similar area of NH and ME. Looks good to me.

@ThePeterCipher - In the book, I thought they named it Churchill because it was fat and gray and a British breed. (I haven't read it in 30 years)

Could be good, if they can handle it like IT. Lithgow and Clarke are a plus.

That's one dirty pussy though...
