SCREAM Reboot Enlists READY OR NOT Directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Spyglass Media has tapped Ready or Not directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett to helm their upcoming reboot (sequel?) of Wes Craven's 1996 horror blockbuster Scream

Bettinelli-Olpin, Gillett and Chad Villela, who collectively make up the horror filmmaking group Radio Silence, will also serve as producers on the project. The film's screenwriter has not been announced.

Details on the project are currently being kept hidden behind Ghostface's mask, so it's actually unclear at the moment whether the new film will be a continuation of the franchise (i.e. Scream 5), or a complete reboot with a new cast.

The first four hit films were all directed by horror legend Wes Craven with Kevin Williamson writing three of them, including the game-changing first installment, and starred Neve Campbell in the lead role as Sidney Prescott with Courteney Cox and David Arquette also appearing in every installment.

In lieu of a Scream 5, the series was given a small-screen reboot on MTV in 2015, but it was canceled after two seasons and later revived on VH1 where it aired its most recent - and presumably final - season last year.

Scream came out in an era when the horror genre was becoming redundant. Now with horror movies being good again, I wonder what they will do. Curious to see how this one turns out because I am a fan of the original.

@MovieMonster - im sure they can find a way to relate it to current trends in horror movies. Maybe even comment on how all these comedians are getting into horror.

Ready or Not was well crafted and very well acted but it did not lean into the HORROR as much as I thought it would. Def could’ve used more blood and better kills. Weaving really made that film.

Hope they’re not afraid to get crazy with Scream.

I heard Ready or Not is real good, gonna wait til its on HBO, but I enjoyed the killcount.

Grew up with Scream, and Scream 4 was one of those R rated movies i snuck into, so yeah I'm excited for this to come

Which cliches haven't been used yet? Pretty sure the franchise hasn't hit the Creepy Kids/Dolls yet. Pretty sure Found Footage hasn't been covered either.

They'll probably genderswap Ghostface, since nothing is scarier to white dudes than that.

@Reeds2Much - Lol, I would say sure, but there's already been 2 different female ghostfaces in the series...

Now, we haven't had a black ghostface yet (in movies)....

How do you reboot something that was a satire to begin with ?

I remember hearing at the time that if it had been taken to more widely by the public, Scream 4 was pretty much intended to be the first leg of another trilogy, with 2nd and 3rd parts already sketched out in at least some very broad terms, and not *entirely* like hey let's make three of these cause that'll make us more money lol

I'd need a fresh rewatch but I remember thinking that 4th movie was at least alright. If this is more of a reboot, it seems like it should then be approached as sort of like the horror version of "Jay & Silent Bob Rebooted". Not that that means just laced with fan service and references top to bottom, but trying to deconstruct some of the reboot dynamic itself.

The original is one of my favorites. A true classic. I'll wait and see on this. OT: saw the Invisible Man with my dad. Loved it! Glad I got to see it so soon. I just got over my cold from a week ago so I was up for a movie today.

Their either gonna make a really great horror comedy with vibes of the classic or go dark and serious like the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie.

Scream 4 was awful! The TV show was actually quite scary. Really loved the new mask. Would like to see a reboot in line with the tv show. Wouldn't hurt to have Wes Craven involved in some capacity either.
