In the midst of a stellar run at the global box office, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment are officilaly moving forward with a Scream sequel, which will be the sixth overall installment in the blockbuster horror franchise.

To date, Scream has grossed over $107.4 million worldwide on an estimated $24 million production budget, making the sequel announcement a no-brainer.

Production is tentatively scheduled to begin this summer, with Radio Silence duo Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) returning to helm the next film. James Vanderbilt (Zodiac; The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not; Castle Rock) will once again pen the script.

Franchise creator Kevin Williamson will also return as an executive producer.

In a statement, Spyglass and Paramount said, “We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family,” while Radio Silence added, “Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators — and in the lineage Wes and Kevin so expertly built — has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life.”

The latest chapter is still playing in theaters, and brings back horror icons Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, and Roger L. Jackson as the legendary voice of Ghostface.

The new ensemble cast of potential murderers and victims features Melissa Barrera (Vida; Dos Veces Tú) as Sam Carpenter, Dylan Minnette (Prisoners13 Reasons Why) as Wes Hicks, Jasmin Savoy Brown (The LeftoversFor The People) as Mindy Meeks-Martin, Jenna Ortega (Jane the Virgin; Iron Man 3) as Tara Carpenter, Jack Quaid (The BoysThe Hunger Games) as Richie Kirsch, Mason Gooding (BooksmartLove, Victor) as Chad Meeks-Martin, newcomer Sonia Ammar as Liv McKenzie, Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Time... In HollywoodBetter Things) as Amber Freeman, and Kyle Gallner (Smallville; American Sniper) as Vince. Additionally, Marley Shelton reprises her Scream 4 role as Sheriff Judy Hicks.

I thought it was decent, but they need to do something new on the next one.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Speaking of which now I wish they would have named the current one 5cream. I hate how many of these sequels are being named the same as the original film in the series.

The movie was fun but predictable as hell. Knew who the killers were so damn early. But it was very well directed.

Hope they do something new narratively with 6

@BlackBeltJones - And don't bring back the Ghost of Killers Past. That shit was so distracting.

@BlackBeltJones - Watching Once upon a time in Hollywood a couple days before watching this movie kinda spoiled it for me if you know what I mean.

@BlackBeltJones - I mean, that's been the meta humor of the franchise since the very beginning, that the tropes of horror movies are so readily used that the killer is obvious.

The only film that somewhat made an effective mystery around the killer was 4, but even then the reminders that the roles are reversed made it pretty clear.

@Origame - I love the movies for the meta and the tropes it plays with and speaks on, but I’d hope there an effective way to still do that and create a good mystery. Like the first film.

@BlackBeltJones - the first film literally had the resident film expert say throughout the entire film those two were the killers.

The ending of Scream 5 made it look like they were handing the franchise over to Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega so I’m hoping they bring them back. They were both great.

@MovieMonster - Jenna Ortega was great but idk about Melissa Barrera. This was one of the few times the godawful acting from an actor on screen was distracting as hell for me. I was curling my toes everytime she was trying to show emotion.
MUTO123
MUTO123 - 2/3/2022, 1:37 PM
@MarDCel - I didn't think Barrera was awful, but Ortega was acting circles around her (to the point that I kinda wish the movie was more about her).

@Waddles - Oh shit, you just reminded me; I got the trailer for X in front of Nightmare Alley the other day. That movie looks like what would happen if Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Boogie Nights, The Visit and Black Dynamite all had the wildest orgy of all time, and I can't wait to see it.

@Waddles - I loved her in The Babysitter 2: Killer Queen, and I fell in love with her since. She is a tremendous talent at such an early part of her career. She is going to do very well if she keeps this up.

@Waddles - Yep. Crazy generation of young talent we've got rising up. Same with Kaitlyn Dever, she was 15 when she broke out on 'Justified' 10 years ago and has been climbing ever since. Which, now that I mention it, she would absolutely slay in a horror movie, don't think she's done one yet.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 2/3/2022, 8:00 PM
@MarDCel - completely agree. Jenna Ortega killed it but Melissa left a lot to be desired… but she was decent in that scene towards the end when she stabs the [frick] out of Richie.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 2/3/2022, 8:02 PM
@Waddles - she’s breathtakingly gorgeous and EASILY one of the best actors on Scream. The fact that’s she’s only 19 is wild.

First film was lightning in a bottle and, for me at least, the sequels have all failed to recapture it.
slickrickdesigns

@MrDandy - 1 and 2 were decent but after Jamie Kennedy’s character died it kind of went “tv soap opera drama” to me. 3 was disappointing and I don’t think I have the curiosity for more than that.

MahN166A - 2/3/2022, 2:45 PM
@slickrickdesigns - I am probably definitely in the minority but I still like Scream 3. Its definitely not the best and Roman's personality and attitude that throws everything out of wack. But I still enjoy it for what it was.
inkniron
inkniron - 2/3/2022, 5:00 PM
@slickrickdesigns - Blame the Columbine kids for Scream 3. Changed the setting, focus, narrative and hemmed up Campbell's availability because of rewrites. I still like it for the most part though.

Craven and Kruger actually tying it back to the first one the way they did was smart, but I still would have liked to see 3 the way Williamson outlined it, instead of them kind of adapting it for 4 and getting what we got. That idea just wasn't the same without Stu

Mindy's actress looked so familiar to me throughout the movie. Just couldn't remember where I had seen her. I had seen none of her credited movies so I didn't know where I knew her from until I saw her credit on Spiderman Miles morales ps5 game. She was the face model for the Tinkerer Phin!

@SatsuiNoJXA - My theory on how they can do it is:

Stu is comatose after the events of the first movie and can't be tried. He fades from the media narrative, his family wants nothing to do with him, so he's stuck in a hospital as a vegetable for six years, until he wakes up after the events of Scream 3. The FBI (potentially Kincaid is involved) has just seen two more killing sprees inspired by Stu and Billy, possibly even more (plus attempts) that we didn't get movies about because they weren't tied to Sydney. Think, from their perspective, how much worse that would get if one of the OG killers were still alive.

So they ship him off under a false name to a psychiatric ward where he spends the last two decades swearing to everyone that he's the REAL Ghostface but no one believes him.

Matthew Lillard would SLAY as a part Joker/part Hannibal Lector locked-down villain just waiting for a chance to get out and reclaim the fame he thinks he's been denied.

I would love to see the series end with Sid being the killer. All these years of killing ghost faces finally made her crack and realized how much she actually likes killing.

@micvalpro - making her the killer would ruin her entire arc.i would be pissed if they did this
TheUnworthyThor

Well that’s awesome and not surprising considering how well it was received and how much money it made.
TheWarThor
TheWarThor - 2/3/2022, 3:20 PM
They need to give the killer a interesting motive. Like what if the killer is going after the relatives of all the previous killers to get revenge for Sid, like a "you deserve justice and I'm going to get it for you!" He's not after her, rather trying to protect her.

@TheWarThor - that would actually be pretty interesting
kg8817
kg8817 - 2/3/2022, 7:14 PM
@TheWarThor - I feel like the fact they mentioned she has kids now is important.

And when I heard that right away I thought that was setup for one of her kids being a new killer.

And if they go that route, this should absolutely be the angle they go with. Sid’s kid discovers the history and believes their mom has had a terrible life, and sets out to right those wrongs in a morbid, psychopathic way.
