SCREAM Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett Tease Sequel Plans And Possible Spinoffs (Exclusive)

Scream is now available for purchase on Digital, and comes loaded with plenty of killer bonus content. The terror then comes home on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 5 (and Paramount+ on March 8), and we recently sat down for a conversation with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett.

During our interview, we asked the filmmakers if they would be interested in expanding on those fictional Stab movies from the Scream Universe. In previous interviews, Matt and Tyler have talked about shooting a lot of Stab content there ultimately wasn't room for in the latest instalment of Scream, and it sounds like they would both be open to potentially revisiting that on streaming.

"We've joked about it a lot. We've said that it would be so fun to make Stab movies," Matt said. "To literally go make Stab movies and make a bunch of them. It would be such a fun muscle to flex and such a fun way to look at something that's already so self-referential and go even another layer into that world would be wild. We've never had a real conversation about it, but it is a great idea."

So, nothing is concrete is planned, but it's definitely interesting to hear that they're open to the idea. Something we do know is happening, of course, is Scream 6. Plans for that movie were confirmed shortly after this latest effort came out, while Neve Campbell let it slip in a recent interview that she's currently in early talks to reprise the role of Sidney Prescott. So, what can Matt and Tyler reveal?

"Outer space. Sorry, was that a spoiler? [Laughs]," Matt joked before Tyler added: "Ghostface in space. No, I think the thing - we can't talk too much about it - but what we can say is that what we love about Scream movies and the canon is that they take the expectation of what it is and totally flip it on its head. The movies have to, at their best, be aware of what the audience thinks is going to happen and then deliver on that in a way that's totally unexpected."

"That's the fun thing of these movies. That's what we're looking to design right now," the director continued. "How do we give people that Scream experience in a way that they're totally unprepared for? That's a really fun challenge. We hope to get to be part of it forever."

Hopefully, more will be revealed soon. Production is currently expected to begin this summer, and with the cast now being brought together, the story is clearly starting to take shape. There are a lot of places this next instalment can go after Scream, and you can read more about that right here.

Feel like Scream’s reached its limit with the legacy characters. Theyre going to have to move forward with new storylines or have a last goodbye for Gail and Sydney if they want to keep this alive.

I really enjoyed the latest movie btw, flaws and all.

@regularmovieguy - I say kill Gale in the opening scene in the next one.

If they really want to flip it on its head, make the killer's identity known from the beginning in the next one, and have Sidney decide to go after him/her, to make an example out of them to stop the cycle.

... The [frick] is there to spinoff? A pack of teens are terrorized by a stalker that is overly influenced by rom-coms?

Okay so I was watching this the other evening, and was mostly on board until the little sis flips out on the big sis for not disclosing her dad is a serial killer. It felt so forced and my connection to the main char was kinda flattened and I just stopped watching. Am I an idiot for this? Feel free to be brutally honest

@McMurdo

Plot device that didn't work. I did like the final moments at the end. "Time for a new rule" bit.

But Scream has the tendency to give every character some sort of fleeting motivation no matter how ridiculous it seems. And I'm ngl I thought Jenny Ortega was a suspect throughout most of the movie, even after getting her ankle stomped in the beginning.

@McMurdo - For me that was fine, because it was an emotional outburts while she was feeling vulnerable and she dealt with it more calmly the next time they met.

My biggest problem was the main character having hallusinations of Billy Loomis. Not only was the de-aging effect kinda sloppy (understandable, considering the budget, but still), but it's just kinda dumb how she would know how he sounded like and it felt like the producers really wanted to have one more popular character from the original, besides the main trio, and the writers couldn't think of anything better.

@FinnishDude - I would have MUCH rather them brought Stu back then the whole Billy Loomis shit.

People want to criticize Stu coming back as contrived or heavy handed but they went with this shit instead.

Stu would’ve been a great way to bring things full circle truly.

Scream is a franchise where it works better to wait a long while before making another one, so horror movies have time to go through new phases and fads to generate new material to satirize/deconstruct. IMO Scream 5 might be the best of the sequels (it's real neck-and-neck with 4), because it could make jokes about stuff like the recent output of "intellectual horror", legacy sequels and even the Scream franchise itself, rather than just be another pastiche of slashers.

@FinnishDude - I think Scream 2 is the best sequel. This film is right behind it.

Scream 4 had a lot going for it and it got [frick]ed up on the cutting room floor.

They should have killed Gale over Dewey IMO. Would have made more sense.

I also always wanted them to act on the Dewey and Sidney romance they low key hinted in the past.. but I’ll gladly take Detective McKaid coming back since they have confirmed that is the Mark that Sidney has a family now with.

@TheLobster - Would love to get Kincaid back. And if they go the route of the FBI covering up Stu's survival, it would make a lot of sense for him to be there.

@SerKurtWagner - I feel like the only reason they mentioned ”Mark” in this was to establish that Sid had a family and wondered if they were setting up one of her kids to be the next killer….

@kg8817 - the Directors confirmed it to be Kincaid in an interview so I imagine they put that in for a reason..

The only way to make the next one work:

Realize the scream franchise is forever tied to the character of Sidney Prescott and Woodsboro.

Kill Sidney in the opening when they pull a surprise and show not one Ghostface, but 2 right in the opening. The only way Sidney would be caught off guard and viewers would accept her possibly dying.

Build whatever story you want to build for the movie.

Get to the end where the two killers are revealed. And before they off the “main character” (or if it’s the girl from this one again), have the two killers phone ring.

There’s a THIRD ghostface. But the two killers are suddenly scared and things are turned upside down, because the third isn’t working with them.

The third Ghostface is revealed to be Sidney. She survived the beginning because the two killers could be built up to have been put on her radar (maybe by Gale) and she had a suspicion they were going to target her, so she faked her death to them and has been stalking them the whole movie.

The end results in her saving the new “main girl” as Sid takes both the killers out but dies in the process.

That’s the only way I can see this working and I don’t really want to accept anything else.
