Werewolf By Night, Marvel Studios' first ever Special Presentation (followed by James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special), premiered on Disney+ last October, and is still widely viewed as one of the most successful and popular small-screen MCU projects yet.

We recently learned that a full-color version is set to debut on the streaming service next month, and director Michael Giacchino has now sent out a Tweet (or a Xeet) explaining the studio's decision to re-release his project.

"We spent a lot of time working on this color version. We wanted to pay homage to the incredible vibrant color in horror films like the ones Hammer made. A whole new look for Werewolf by Night."

The black-and-white, horror-tinged Halloween Special really was a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, paying homage to the classic Universal monster movies with its noirish style, creepy atmosphere and heightened levels of violence.

Rumors have swirled that there may be plans in place for ol' Jack Russell and his pals to return, but we haven't had any announcement yet. Still, we can't imagine this will be their one and only appearance.

Do you plan on re-watching Werewolf by Night in color? Drop us a comment down below.

"On a dark and sombre night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader; the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic."

Werewolf by Night stars Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell / the Werewolf; A monster hunter who has been afflicted with a curse; Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, Ulysses Bloodstone's estranged daughter who dislikes her family's tradition of hunting monsters; Harriet Sansom Harris as Verussa Bloodstone, Ulysses's widow and Elsa's stepmother who leads the secret group of monster hunters.

Also appearing as the additional monster hunters are Kirk R. Thatcher as Jovan, Eugenie Bondurant as Azarel, Leonardo Nam as Liorn, and Daniel J. Watts as Barasso. Al Hamacher appears as Billy Swan, the Bloodstones' servant; and Carey Jones provides the motion-capture of Ted / Man-Thing.

@Vigor - The gif was supposed to be ironic of course.

Black and white is great and movies filmed in it regardless of their time period should be left that way.
Screw this Ted Turner nonsense.

@Feralwookiee - Was it actually shot on B&W film, though? I imagine it was shot in full-color digital, then converted to B&W in post.

Generally, I agree with you of course, but as long as the original is still available, I think it's fine.

@ClintThaHamster - I had to look it up, but you're right. It was originally shot in color and was converted later.

I do still feel that movies originally filmed in B&W should remain that way.

It’s a shame. The movie was designed to be seen in black & white. A colorized version is going to feel less special.

@santoanderson - Gives Disney a chance to do some last minute race swapping of iconic characters.

Just kidding who gives af? The original is still there, just like the white versions of everybody's favorite Disney movies. Why be offended by having 2 versions of a thing to pick from? Just watch the one you prefer

Cos Disney are refusing to pay their writers and actors fairly, so are having to re-release content with a new spin on it. Simple as that

Love Hammer, but using that as a reasoning feels like such a cop out lmao. Feel like Marvel had the clay for a great horror corner between this and the incredibly strong Dracula comic they have from Wolfman, but I don’t expect them to do a whole lot with it. Especially with the recent quality control issues
Origame
Origame - 9/17/2023, 10:35 AM
@tmp3 - yeah. Hammer movies aren't even that vibrant. It's more specifically the blood.

So last year they said they specifically wanted it to be in black and white to pay homage to the old RKO and Universal Monster movies and now they say "We wanted to pay homage to the incredible vibrant color in horror films like the ones Hammer made"?

So which is it?

(answer: this was a Disney decision not a Giacchino decision. This way they get two bites at the apple)
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 9/17/2023, 11:14 AM
@ObserverIO - "So which is it?"

Why not both? They made it in B&W and then someone (Disney, Giacchino, whoever) said "Might be cool if we made it look like a Hammer film. As many have already said, as long as the original's still available, who cares?
bobevanz
bobevanz - 9/17/2023, 11:22 AM

clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 9/17/2023, 11:35 AM
@bobevanz - Fewer than have seen the Universal Monster movies, for sure, but I'd wager not by much.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/17/2023, 12:44 PM
@ClintThaHamster - Because it's the same film. Are you saying that the only thing that homages the Universal movie is the fact thatit's in black and white, not the way it was lit or staged (or pretty much everything else about the production) and that the only homage to the Hammer films is that they were in color and this is in color?

Gee, I guess 99% of the movies this year are also an homage to the Hammer films too, huh?
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 9/17/2023, 12:58 PM
@ObserverIO - "Are you saying that the only thing that homages the Universal movie is the fact thatit's in black and white"

I mean . . . kinda? Universal Horror films were not known for large ensembles of characters, graphic violence, action sequences, or multiple monsters in the same flick (at least during the classic period.) I think it would be accurate to say that the primary way in which Werewolf By Night paid homage to the Universal horror films was the German impressionist lighting and cinematography.

All of that aside, the Hammer horror films were very much the spiritual successor to the Universal Monster flicks. Gothic settings, grave actors speaking very seriously, occasional camp, not a whole lot of actual monsters. I just hope they follow Hammer's lead in introducing the occasional nudity.
ObserverIO

@ClintThaHamster - At the very least some heaving bosoms. Cleavage is a necessity in those horror films and I'm not talking about hacking and slashing.

I refuse to use the term “xeet”. Given the quality of discourse on the platform that it originates from, a more appropriate term would be an “X-cretion”.

Order66 - 9/17/2023, 2:22 PM
I agree with both versions. Black and white is universal tribute and bright vivid colors is hammer tribute. You can’t go wrong with both. They gave us the option to choose so it’s not a wrong answer. Just pick the one you like. Either way the show was awesome and well made.

Marvel needs content right now and this is a needless attempt to fill up the empty space of content right now.😑

Why marvel doesn't do more limited series is a mystery🤡

I'll definitely will watch this. He sold me on it with taking inspiration from Hammer.

And that makes me wish Agatha [whatever subtitle it has now] was still House of Harkness and was an anthology show similar to Hammer House of Horror.

It'll look and feel different being colour.

Could be good though.
