AVENGERS: ENDGAME Actor Criticized Edward Norton's Performance in THE INCREDIBLE HULK

Recently, an actor who had worked on 2008's The Incredible Hulk, has come out to criticize Edward Norton's lack of effort performance as Hulk

After years of feeling like the black sheep of the interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems Marvel is keen on continuing onwards in their universe with the Edward Norton led - The Incredible Hulk.

While a potential World War Hulk film has been rumored to have been in development over at Marvel Studios for the last couple of years - along with Marvel bringing back characters such as Betty Ross and Samuel Sterns for their upcoming Captain America: Brave New World film, Marvel is finally ready to put their messy past with The Hulk behind them.

Albeit, that might be easier said than done for us fans, now that an actor who has worked on several Marvel Studios films has come out and cast criticism on Edward Norton's performance for The Incredible Hulk.

In the book - MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Terry Notary - a well integrated actor/stuntman/choreographer within the MCU who has been part of multiple Marvel films since 2008's The Incredible Hulk (additionally served as the stand-in for Groot in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame), had this to say about Norton's performance:

"[Norton] wasn’t really engaged, as far as the Hulk stuff goes, unless he was transforming from himself into the Hulk. He was not very present through the whole thing."

Supposedly, Norton's lack of effort resulted in a much more complex feat for the visual effects artists on The Incredible Hulk to face, as since Norton failed to present a genuine "involved" performance, the artists had to manually render all of The Hulk's facial expressions - an extremely lengthy and tiresome task.

"Hulk doesn’t have Edward Norton’s expressions, but the two are eerily similar in facial timing."

Notary goes on to praise Tim Roth's Abomination/Emil Blonsky performance though, for the actor appeared much more involved throughout production of the film:

"[Roth is] one of those quintessential actors that likes to be involved, wants to make sure that he’s going to look good and his character’s going to look good."

With Mark Ruffalo having taken up the mantle of Hulk since 2012's The Avengers, fans have been eager for Marvel to desperately bring back Norton's portrayal of Hulk in the current-day MCU.

Did you like Edward Norton's performance as the giant green rage monster in The Incredible Hulk?

Scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) desperately seeks a cure for the gamma radiation that contaminated his cells and turned him into The Hulk. Cut off from his true love Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) and forced to hide from his nemesis, Gen. Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), Banner soon comes face-to-face with a new threat: a supremely powerful enemy known as The Abomination (Tim Roth).

The Incredible Hulk is a 2008 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character the Hulk. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Universal Pictures, it is the second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It was directed by Louis Leterrier from a screenplay by Zak Penn, and stars Edward Norton as Bruce Banner alongside Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt, Tim Blake Nelson, Ty Burrell, and Christina Cabot.

I thought it was pretty well known that Norton wasn’t a fan of his experience filming this movie.

I honestly couldn’t stop laughing reading the difference in the comments about Roth and Norton

I actually preferred his Nortons Bruce Banner and just behind Man of Steel Incredible Hulk is the most underrated CBM. I think it's better than 2 out of the three Iron Man films and 3 out of the four Thor films.

@Forthas - I agree, TIH is actually one of my favorite Marvel movies still

Something is off. The behind the scenes, and Norton's comments would suggest something very different, so I would take what this dude says with a grain of salt. That being said, I'm not sure why this movie gets a bad rep. It's my favorite Hulk movie, favorite live-action Hulk, favorite Banner, and generally one of my favorite comic book movies of all time. That climax fight between Hulk and Abomination was/ still is top tier. Not sure what the problem is, but to each their own.

I thought Norton was fine. That CGI on the hulks face was really poor though, even for the time.

Always thought TIH was pretty great, other than shredded hulk which wasn’t bad. Norton looked more like the Banner I always envisioned, but Ruffalo nailed the character more(at first). Very introverted and submissive generally. Norton was to confident in his portrayal. Don’t know what to think these days, I understand you need character growth and development but something doesn’t sit right with Hulk in his most recent portrayals. And I didn’t hate She-Hulk, thought it was enjoyable filler. But they shouldn’t be making filler lol

Didn't help that they cut a lot of good material from the film.

Similar to the first Cap and Thor, 'The Incredible Hulk' was just "OK".... But, with that said, at least Norton gave me the impression that he was portraying a character. Ruffalo has been playing himself in green-face for awhile now. He's not even trying at this point. A re-boot with a younger actor should be at the top of the list following 'Secret Wars'. 🫤

Seems like that stand in actor is wanting some attention.

Interesting. I found Norton to be the best Banner. Ruffalo never really managed to capture the dread and isolation that being the hulk would naturally bring. Bana was very good as well. I guess ruffalo is the worst Banner by the process of elimination.

@Crtdacct2say - Ruffalo was VERY good as Banner under Whedon’s direction. Even though fans didn’t like the shipping between him and Natasha, Ruffalo still carried the conflicted duality VERY well in Ultron. Problem is is that he got complacent from Ragnarok forward, and by She-Hulk it was outright lazy.

Yeah, sure. The guy famous for being too passionate about the films he's in to the point of wanting control over the final product and being difficult to work with was really disconnected.

Especially when Norton has shown interest in appearing in the avengers when it looked like they might drop him.

@Origame - Ya, that's what i always heard. I thought it was well known already that Marvel didn't like working with Norton because he wanted too much control and was constantly making changes to the script trying to improve it.

Norton feels like Banner from the comics. Ruffalo was an edgier Banner in the first Avengers. After that he became a joke.
