Tim Blake Nelson Has Signed On For More Hulk Movies, Wants To Play The Leader

The Leaves Of Grass actor/director reveals that he has indeed signed on with Marvel for more films, and that he would love to return as The Leader..

I'm sure everyone remembers the end of The Incredible Hulk when Dr Samuel Sterns is doused with gamma and has his head begin to swell and bubble. He was clearly being lined up to return somewhere down the line as The Leader. But then everything went a bit up in the air when Ed Norton was recast with Mark Ruffalo in the role of Bruce Banner. Tim Blake Nelson, who played Sterns, was asked all about it during an interview with ThePlaylist..

When asked if he was signed for more Marvel films, he replied,

“I am, but it’s a question as to whether they’ll make more movies, which was the [original] intention, or whether they’ll take a fresh start with the villains, since they switched Bruce Banner to Mark Ruffalo. I certainly very much want to return as the Leader and I hope they’ll have me. The intention was that I would come back, which is why my head starts to, um, bubble, at the end. It’s just a question as to whether a) they’re going to make more Hulk movies, and b) because of Ruffalo, if they’re going to use me again.”

Personally I think Marvel would be crazy not to just keep on making movies that follow on from TIH. So they had to change lead actor, would anyone seriosuly stand for yrt another reboot of every other aspect post Avengers? I think we will be seeing Nelson again at some point, big green head and all.

If we dont get The Incredible Hulk Returns... then maybe the TV show starring Ruffalo, and Nelson.. Having the Leader seems doable for TV and its got to be a better villain than Jack McGee.

I hope he comes back as well. I still don't understand how TIH didn't make more money. The more I watch it the more I like it.

Unfortunately I think a lot of people thought The Incredible Hulk was a sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk and that's why they didn't go see it. I absolutely agree that TIH is an awesome film and it deserved to make more money.

After the show gets canceled in a month, hopefully they consider a Hulk sequel.

Another Hulk film simply won't sell as well as the last two. Especially with Rufalo as the lead. Nostalgia has left the building and i don't see him working as a sales pitch to promote a whole other feature to all the average movie goers. But i would be interested in seeing Nelson's performance as Leader in an Avengers sequel though :)

If Avengers does well enough I think they will make another Hulk film. If they do they'd be crazy not to use him as the Leader. As mentioned I wouldn't mind him set up in an Avengers film.

I would like a sequel, but I dont want to see Rufalo. I had no problem with him until I saw some videos of him on youtube mouthing off about politics.

Since Mark isn't screwing with the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe: then I don't see why they wouldn't use Tim again.

@Juggy: Yeah. I love to see him make at least a small appearance in The Avengers so that it could lead him into the next Hulk film.

superdog- Until proven otherwise, they definitely are. And i'd hate for a cool villain like Leader to be wasted especially after having been built up.

I didnt really like him all that much in The Incredible Hulk but I have no problem with him returning as I'm still hoping they'll scrap the idea for a TV series and carry on the movie franchise. 2010 should have been the year of Iron Man 2 and Hulk 2...

the leader is a classic hulk villain, but his not strong enough charactor to carry the hulk sequel.

team him up with someone like the abomination,bi-beast or the u-foes.

& your onto a winner.

I am against an Incredible Hulk TV show as I would much prefer the series to continue on in movie form which will allow for a bigger budget and thus better treatment of the character and access to the larger Marvel CU.

I agree that TIH was a brilliant movie and should have made more money. Universal did a HORRIBLE job distinguishing TIH from Ang Lee's Hulk. The average movie goer thought it was a sequel and didn't want to see it. If TIH had a better PR campaign so that the public knew it was a fresh start, the movie would have performed better. The chance to really 'reboot' the character will come from "The Avengers" which will instill the Marvel Hulk in the public's collective mind. Marvel should not make any decision on reducing the Hulk to TV until after the Avengers comes out.

People thought TIH was a continuation of Ang Lee's film ON OPPENING DAY. It didn't take long for everyone to not only spread the word about it NOT being a sequel but actually being a better film all together! It's the whole concept that doesn't sell anymore. Ang Lee's film made it's money on the 70ies tv show's nostalgia alone. It's the only reason why it made more than TIH in it's first opening weeks, and not so much more at that. TIH eventually beat it. In fact, Superman Returns beat both their asses if that's any indication at all. The concept simply doesn't attract the masses as much as it used to. Hulk has the same leg to stand on as Jekyl & Hyde or Wolfman would. Transfiguration as a stand alone box office film concept, is dead. Wolfman proved it and so did TIH.

I have seen TIH many times over and over again and I still believe that although it didn't do better than expected in the big screen, it is still a great movie with a very good plot and IMO is still just as good if not slightly better than IronMan & IronMan2. There will be TIH 2 in the near future. So excited for Hulk to appear on TV.

hell yeah! which clarifies any future Hulk movies be a sequel to the Incredible hulk. I like this. I hope the Leader is a shadowy villain in the background for a second Incredible Hulk movie and he sends a powerful villain after the Hulk. Then in the third Incredible Hulk movie, he takes on the Hulk head-on with help from Abomination

This is very, very good. The Leader is a great villain and he will do a great job.

Shaman, I love you like a brother, but I think your way off base generalizing with the statement "Transfiguration as a stand alone box office film concept, is dead". That's like saying movies about alien invaders can't stand on their own. Or movies about mistaken identity. Its all about the individual script.

Whether there is a hulk sequel will depend on the use of the character in the avengers. that will be the real deciding factor.
SmokinIndo
SmokinIndo - 10/27/2010, 6:57 PM
@Shaman

I disagree.

I knew people that saw TIH and STILL thought it was a sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk. The movie didn't really make a big deal of distinguishing itself. After all, the movie wasn't an origin story and it started out in South America, precisely where the last Hulk ended. I mean, for us fans it was obvious, but for general audiences who aren't rehearsed in the comics and don't understand the idea of continuity, they just couldn't grasp the idea that it was a reboot. The fact that the script was originally written as a sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk was one of the film's biggest downfalls.

But another thing that I think contributed to TIH's box office disappointment was its marketing campaign. The trailers started happening pretty late in the game. And compared to Iron Man and TDK, the marketing for it was pretty weak. (I didn't even see a trailer for it with Iron Man!)

I don't think Hulk is dead yet. Even if transfiguration is dead (which I don't believe is true), people will see Hulk if there's lots of fighting and plenty of destruction. Just look at the success of Transformers!

Orehrepus - 10/28/2010, 12:51 AM
Mark Ruffalo is not there as a reboot package of the Hulk universe. He just replaced Norton. If they decide to follow-up on The Incredible Hulk after Avengers (which I agree with Ror, they definitely SHOULD!) there's no reason to replace Tim.

He was there to start it, he's available and willing, and he's a good actor. So what reason is there to replace him?
