Read IRON MAN 3 Script Excerpt Of 'The Mandarin' Reveal; Writer Says It's His Toughest Scene

Arguably one of this year's most fanboy controversial scenes in a comic book movie, the big Mandarin twist in Iron Man 3 is the most difficult scene Drew Pearce ever wrote. Check it out after the jump!

The New York magazine Vulture is conducting interviews with several screenwriters behind this year's most successful films and inquiring about scenes they had the toughest time scripting. For Marvel's Iron Man 3, co-writer Drew Pearce says the scene where Sir Ben Kingsley's Mandarin outs himself as Trevor Slattery to Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark was certainly the most difficult.

"Hopefully, the movie's done well enough by now that this doesn't count as a spoiler, but we obviously chose to take a direction with Sir Ben Kingsley's version of the Mandarin that has a huge surprise. He turns out not to be the thing that the movie — and the marketing of the movie — purports him to be, which is this canon-based archnemesis to Iron Man. It gets to the trickiest thing of all the superhero movies out at the moment, which is: What makes for an interesting villain? Often, they're just there as a dark reflection of the hero, but Shane Black, who directed Iron Man 3 and who I co-wrote the movie with, told me that the key to making massive movies in this machine that will try to sand the edges off of what you write is to go into it with bold strokes. For the Mandarin, I'd been kicking around lots of ideas about false faces and terrorist pop stars and I was really worried about telling Marvel — I thought we'd get strung up — but Shane said, "[frick] 'em, this idea is kind of indelible. We should run towards it." And to both of our surprise, when we pitched it to Kevin Feige, who's the president of Marvel Studios, he took it in and said, "I love it." He'd been trying to crack the Mandarin concept since the first Iron Man. The Mandarin was actually in the first Iron Man up until six weeks before they shot it!" For Drew Pearce's full response, head over to Vulture. He also provided them with an excerpt from his and co-writer/director Shane Black's Iron Man 3 screenplay highlighting the controversial scene, which you can read below! What do you think?

I did not mind that the "Mandarin" was false and that the real Mandarin was someone else. But what I hated was the execution of the reveal. It was cringe worthy.

This scene wasn't that bad, the point's been raised before but, How does 1 scene in a movie make the other 2 hours and 20 minutes bad?!?

The twist was terrible, but the rest of the movie had its problems as well.

IM3 is easily one of my faves, and I had no complaints. Trevor was a way more interesting charactor than Mandarin has ever been in cartoons or comics. You don't like it? You are part of a very small, yet extremely vocal group (kind of like them small dogs, always yapping but scaring nobody).

That one scene didnt ruin the movie although to crap on the Mandarin is not cool...what ruined the movie is that the title character isnt in the movie...it shouldve been called Regular man and his amazing friends...meet a lil boy who is as sarcastic as Tony Stark and apparently he too is a boy genius see how the villain who is in the war machine/iron patriot armor more than Rhodey etc etc etc snoreeeeeeeeeeeee

The flying scenes in Superman IV were awful. The first movie 9 or so years earlier did a better job.

This has to qualify as one of the worst comic book movie fights ever.

Iron Man 3 was a necessary sacrifice to keep Marvel's big star (Robert Downey Jr.) happy. Kevin Feige agreed to let Downey bring in his friend director (Shane Black) and then convinced himself that he was fine with the whole Mandarin twist. I'm sure it bothers him, even if he won't admit it. At least they got Downey to sign for more Avengers movies, which means more box office for Marvel.

I'm more bothered by the fact that Stark had 40+ suits to choose from and not one of them could take much damage. It's like they were all made of tin foil. He took on Thor in The Avengers and that single suit lasted most of the movie.

Even with Aldrich Killian using the Mandarin to cover up for his Extremis storline, he was still a lame villain.

^^^Agreed^^^

The film had all of the action and etc but the overall tone and thrill of the film was just severely lacking if you ask me. Even though the film is titled "Iron Man 3" I at LEAST expected to see War Machine get some action. He had more dialogue than action...actually this was the only action scene he had...

Hopefully we get to see some of this in Age of Ultron...

Instead of crap like this...
