Dredd is one of the most entertaining movies of the year. Is it a theatrical masterpiece or exemplary feat of acting or special effects? No, but it is a gritty, faithful, adaptation of one of the best characters to ever scowl across a comic book panel. It sure as hell deserves better than its paltry $6.3M estimated weekend box-office take. Correct your mistake, assuage your misgivings and go see Dredd this week!

Dredd is a 2012 British science fiction action film directed by Pete Travis and written by Alex Garland. It is based on the 2000 AD comic strip Judge Dredd and its eponymous character by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Karl Urban stars as Judge Dredd, a law enforcer given the power of judge, jury and executioner in the vast dystopian metropolis of Mega-City One that lies within a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Alongside rookie Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), Dredd is forced to bring order to a feared 200-story slum and its resident drug lord, Ma-Ma (Lena Headey).

Garland began writing the script as early as 2006, although development of a new Judge Dredd film adaptation was not announced until December 2008, that would be unrelated to the 1995 film adaptation Judge Dredd. Principal photography began in November 2010, with an estimated $45 million (US) budget. The project was shot using 3D cameras throughout on practical sets, and on location in the South African cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg. Dredd was released on 7 September 2012 in the United Kingdom. It is scheduled for release worldwide on 21 September 2012.

I want to see Dredd, always liked the character and the comic books back in the day. Unfortunately since Dredd is a British import, he doesn't have the following of a Superman, Batman or any of the Avengers and isn't as well known as another British character like Dr. Who.

That's some desperate attempt by CBM to get audiences to go see the movie. Are you guys getting paid for this ?

So a 77% on RT I guess now means "amazing reviews/critically acclaimed masterpiece?" I'm sure it's watchable but let's all take a cold shower people...

This is a movie everyone should see. It was written, acted and directed perfectly. Far superior action movie than The Dark Knight Rise for sure.

The script well written and wasn't filled with those oneliners that are often over used ruin a movie for me.

The cast was awesome. Karl Urban nailed Dredd without being one dimensional. And Olivia Thirlby was terrific as rookie Anderson. Anderson and the bad guy Ma-Ma backstory was fitted nicley into the movie giving the characters depth.

As for director Pete Travis, never seen anything of his before but he did a fantastic job of directing.

Just talked to a friend who saw it. He said from the trailer he went in with very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised and actually raved about the movie.

This is a movie people shouldn't wait to see on Blu-ray/DVD.

I hope word of mouth will make people go see Dredd. Like I said on the last few Dredd post, Dredd was a great film. Peter Travis & Alex Garland stayed true to the Dredd comics. Action packed, it had a sense of humor, it was dark, and brutal. Check it out!

the panel at the top states there are 6 million CBM users. If all of us gave this film support the benefits will spread far wider than a dredd sequel.... think of the possibilities of other lesser known properties hitting the big screen. And well done cbm for supporting not just this but all the things that matter to us!

If the box office doesn't support this film, I sure hope home media does.

We need more movies of this caliber.

@Well said ChiefJudge. Had no expectations going into the theatre but I came out a believer. Makes you realise just how few CBMs are pitched for a more adult audience and why there needs to be more like Dredd.

I don't believe being a serious comic book fan means you have to well-versed in every comic universe and piece of written material out there. I can't say any of the names listed are on my favorite list, but I am sure there are plenty of people who consider them favorites. To call someone a casual fan though, just because they don't follow certain types of comics, is a little bit condescending. I am a big comic book fan, but I am also selective and subjective as to what types of comics I like and choose to follow. I don't put to my memory bank every artist, writer and director out there, if I don't follow their particular material. If that makes me a casual fan, then to each their own, but I disagree with that perception.

Saw it for a second time today. Such a great film. This needs to be seen by more people. And it's not like there isn't a market for films like this. It's just that Lionsgate needs to stop being so cheap and let people know that this film exists.

I just saw Dredd! Its a great intro to a very expansive franchise. I hope it does well and garners a sequal so we can explore more of the A.D.2000 universe. A taste of Blade Runner, a taste of Dirty Harry with a setting framed like a Heavy Metal magazine, I really dug this Sci-Fi.
