UPDATE: DREDD Has An Abysmal Opening Day And The Weekend Looks, Well, DREDDful

In some VERY disappointing news for fans, it looks as if DREDD won't even manage to hit double figures this weekend at the North American box office (making hopes of a sequel for the critically acclaimed remake all the less likely).

According to Deadline (and several other trusted box office analysts), DREDD has opened with only $2.2 million. That's HALF of what the original 1995 movie made, despite the fact that this remake is in 3D and has been met with almost unanimous critical acclaim. A 'B' CinemaScore is unlikely to either help or hurt its chances of a better weekend and it's currently expected to not gross any higher than $5.7 million. As the site points out, "there was never much of an effort to widen the film’s appeal or the audience for it," by Lionsgate and that has undoubtedly resulted in these poor numbers. For a sequel to go ahead, Alex Garland recently said that the film would need to earn at least $50 million at the North American box office. Not gonna happen. Read my review by clicking HERE.

UPDATE: The latest figures have DREDD at $6.3 million for the weekend; one of the worst comic book movie/3D openings EVER. With a budget of $45 million, a sequel could happen if it takes off overseas, although it's unlikely that a major studio would consider picking it up after such low numbers in North America. Despite a Rotten Tomatoes consensus which declares, "Fueled by bombastic violence and impressive special effects, rooted in self-satire and deadpan humor, Dredd 3D is a rare example of a remake that actually works," it seems as if the film is destined to be a one-off cult hit.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

STARRING:

Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson
Lena Headey as Madeline Madrigal
Domhnall Gleeson as Travis Synders

Meh. It'll find an audience on bluray. If The Boondock Saints got a sequel (by some miracle) based solely on word of mouth and DVD sales, Dred'll be just fine.

Such a shame, because this movie was absolutely awesome and one of the few times the 3D worked for it!

Karl Urban was a BAMF as Dredd, as well.

"The good news for Lionsgate is that it knew the film would underperform and has minimal risk."

See, this is what annoys me about some studios. They initially assume this film will underperform, possibly because it's a lesser known hero and is following a poorly received initial adaptation, but do to no actual reasons. And rather than marketing the hell out of it and getting the audience interested in it, like what's done with other films, they decide to save money and just not promote it widely. So then when it actually does underperform, for whatever reason, they then say "at least we didn't lose all that money marketing it". When, in fact, the marketing could have saved it. They then put all the blame on the film and possibly the audience, even though they may be at fault for not getting the word out.

It's ridiculous. It's basically predicting something bad is going to happen and then not doing anything to prevent that bad thing from happening. And saying "told ya so" when that bad thing actually happens, absolving yourself of any blame for not trying to stop it. This is what Lionsgate did.

It's a shame. Maybe if it got released over the summer, maybe it would've done better. Movies like the Total Recall remake(which was a disappointment) should've been released in the fall/winter instead of getting a summer spot.

Not surpsings in the least. This sounds like a good movie and I look forward to see it but there honestly not a lot of demand for a new Dredd movie. No advertisement either. They should have spent money rebooting or restarting the Dredd comic book and when that got popular than made a movie.

Tazmaniak- VERY TRUE. It's sad these companies seem to think they will know how a movie will perform and act accordingly instead of trying their best and hoping for the best. So Lame. That's the movie industry these days.

It's too bad, I checked out the movie yesterday and it was pretty good. I thought the action and violence were top notch with great scenes. Hopes it does better and that it gets a sequel...anyone think maybe this would make a better tv series?

I just saw it this afternoon, and it was quite good. The plot was simple and to the point, and had some great character moments for Dredd and Anderson.

Yeah, fcuk North America. Mops up absolute horse shet like Transformers and the Fast and the Furious but gives Dredd a wide body swerve. You have until the end of the weekend to improve before I cast judgement.
