JUSTICE LEAGUE Director Zack Snyder Explains Why He Doesn't Actually "Love" The "Evil Superman"

There's a perception that Justice League director Zack Snyder is a fan of "Evil" Superman, but the filmmaker has now explained why he believes it's important for the Man of Steel to have a moral compass.

In a recent interview, Justice League director Zack Snyder talked in detail about why he believes it's important for Superman to struggle with his moral compass, while dismissing the notion that he's a huge fan of an "evil" Man of Steel (this was assumed because he planned on having Clark Kent fall under the control of Darkseid's Anti-Life Equation).

"Do I love the evil Superman?" the filmmaker ponders in the video below. "I'm not 100 percent sure that's true, other than I love the idea of Superman going on a journey with his character. I love the idea of Superman having to reconcile his morality, reconcile his place on Earth, reconcile his love affair with Lois and how that affects, y'know, the way he relates to humanity as we all do with the normal relationships we all have in our daily lives."

"When we see Superman grapple with those things, he becomes a lot more relatable," Snyder continued. "When I see Superman having to figure out, like, what to do, I now can go 'Wow, if I was Superman, I can see' -- because, y'know, Superman is such an abstract character, in his powers and what he's able to do, any time you can bring him back down to earth, he becomes a lot more relatable and, I think for that reason, a lot more interesting."

It definitely sounds like Snyder has a good grasp on what makes the character of Superman tick. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. clearly panicked over his ideas for the Man of Steel, hence why Joss Whedon's reshoots essentially changed the hero's entire story arc in the theatrical cut. '

Are you excited to see more of Snyder's take on Supes in Zack Snyder's Justice League?

@SnideCut - ", y'know, the way he relates to humanity as we all do with the normal relationships we all have in our daily lives."

"When we see Superman grapple with those things, he becomes a lot more relatable,"

I disagree.

@nikgrid - He's acting as if Superman isn't the most down to earth dude. Superman isn't a guy who thinks "I have the power of a god, how do I relate to humans", he is a normal guy who says "I have godlike powers, they don't change who I am". The best Superman stories are when he is the most human character. There is a reason people have a hard time thinking Clark Kent is Superman in the comics, he is a really normal guy. Some people have the idea that because Bruce Wayne is the mask Batman wears that Clark Kent is the mask Superman wears, when it's not. Whenever Clark is asked this he always says that Clark Kent is the real him.

@JustAChillFan - writers forget Superman is raised on earth and finds out he’s an alien, but as soon as finds this out they treat him like he arrived on earth in his 20s and can’t relate to humans , he grew up around humans lol. That style of character is more suited for Martian man hunter not Clark kent

@nikgrid - Superman is the hero with the most humanity out there. His humanity isnt something he has to grapple with. Just goes to show he doesn't get the character

@nikgrid - seriously he could be talking about Dr Manhattan. He doesn’t get Supes at all, it’s not the super that makes him a hero it’s the man, and it’s down to what ma and pa taught him (in the comics and most other versions) not some sense that he’s better than humanity as he and space dad seem tI think!

@JustAChillFan - "Whenever Clark is asked this he always says that Clark Kent is the real him."

That's right, everything you said is right...MoS Superman was these things, however because it is a more realistic take on the character we need to see him confronted by these abilities and how he masters them.

@SnideCut - He does get the character (As we saw in MoS), ZS just rambles in interviews.

@Sixesandsevens - Like I said I don't think ZS gives the best interview he rambles and goes off in tangents. But MoS showed he does get the character.

@Sixesandsevens - Just watch MoS. His Superman is more realistically human than Chris Reeves or Routh. Snyder and Goyer put the MAN in SuperMAN.

@nikgrid - it really wasn't though, because in pretty much every comic where they go over his origin, he masters his powers as a kid. Even Smallville for all it's faults, showed how even when a new ability of his developed randomly, by the end of the episode he had a good handle on them. Again, personality wise he is a pretty normal dude, he doesn't question his place in the universe that much, he just helps where he can because he can. It's really that simple. We don't need to see him confronted by his abilities, most of them he grew up having. If you grew up as a kid being super strong and being able to burn shit with your eyes, by the time you're an adult these things shouldn't be something you think about too much.

@nikgrid - I saw MoS. Which was why I know he doesn't.

@JustAChillFan - No you misunderstand me I was talking about the first part where he is a kid, but as I've said previously this IS a more realistic take on Superman, so it's only natural for an adopted kid to wonder where he is from. Look if you don't like it you don't like it.
JustAChillFan
JustAChillFan - 7/25/2020, 9:17 AM
@nikgrid - that was the only version of Superman where his ship doesn't have information telling him who he is and where he came from. Literally the only one. It's not "more realistic" it's just different for reasons that make no sense. If his father sends him to earth to save him and to possibly recreate krypton, or lead humanity without Kryptons mistakes, don't you think he should have somehow made sure Clark would know all this? Its [frick]ing dumb that his father shoots him off to earth with nothing to tell him anything. He literally only finds the fortress because he has no idea where he came from.

Well no... Superman is a goody two-shoes to the tee. Yeah, he has emotions, including anger, so if that's what he was trying to explore, then OK.

But I just saw a depressing alien warlord, lol.

Finally someone who gets it.

We want to see Clark purposely choosing to ignore the cries of a boat sinking because he has just worked a huge shifts at the planet, is dead tired and Lois kicked him to the couch because he forgot to pick up her anti anxiety meds from the grocer.

That’s what it is to be Superman in today’s world.
