Zack Snyder's
Justice League is a superhero film with a heavy burden on its shoulders; in addition to handling the introduction of one of the biggest superhero unions in comics, the movie will also be judged on the back of its predecessor,
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a film that was less-than-loved by fans and critics alike. It's well-known by now that there were some drastic shakeups at Warner Bros. following the movie's reception, along with the consistent message that future films in the DCEU would be more "fun" and "optimistic".
In an interview with Heroic Hollywood,
Batman v Superman second unit director Damon Caro (who is also working on
Justice League) explained that despite the lighter tone in upcoming films,
Batman v Superman was always supposed to be the dark film in contrast to
Justice League.
"And the interesting thing is, on Man of Steel, in [Zack Snyder’s] head he had the storyline treatment of where they were going to go, and at the beginning of BvS it was even richer and deeper. The arc was BvS was the midway point and the darker movie. Hence what happens at the end; the whole tone of it was darker."
Caro elaborated that while Warner Bros. and the creative teams behind the movie both acknowledge the criticisms that were levelled at
BvS, they didn't scrap their plans and completely start over due to the backlash. Caro compared the story beats to ancient Greek tragedies and the
Star Wars films in the vein of the hero (or heroes) being dealt a difficult obstacle before rising back up.
"If you play your story all at one level, there are no peaks and valleys, there’s no life. The great stories, the Greek tragedies, even life we have to be knocked down before we can build our way up. Justice League was always the rebirth of hope and the rise. People try to say that it’s a response to the backlash, and I’d definitely say that criticisms were heard, but it’s not like we threw everything out and started with a blank slate. It’s a bit like Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back? Dark movie! But then Return of the Jedi is the rise and the rebuilding of hope."
Time will tell whether
Justice League will meet fan expectations; actress Gal Gadot teased on her Faceboook page over the weekend that a new trailer would be arriving
"soon", though she offered no specifics.
