BATMAN V SUPERMAN's Assistant Director Touts JUSTICE LEAGUE As The "Rebirth Of Hope"

With Zack Snyder's Justice League promising a lighter tone and optimistic portrayal of its heroes, Batman v Superman assistant director Damon Caro has spoken about the film's hopeful story arc...

Zack Snyder's Justice League is a superhero film with a heavy burden on its shoulders; in addition to handling the introduction of one of the biggest superhero unions in comics, the movie will also be judged on the back of its predecessor, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a film that was less-than-loved by fans and critics alike. It's well-known by now that there were some drastic shakeups at Warner Bros. following the movie's reception, along with the consistent message that future films in the DCEU would be more "fun" and "optimistic".

In an interview with Heroic Hollywood, Batman v Superman second unit director Damon Caro (who is also working on Justice League) explained that despite the lighter tone in upcoming films, Batman v Superman was always supposed to be the dark film in contrast to Justice League"And the interesting thing is, on Man of Steel, in [Zack Snyder’s] head he had the storyline treatment of where they were going to go, and at the beginning of BvS it was even richer and deeper. The arc was BvS was the midway point and the darker movie. Hence what happens at the end; the whole tone of it was darker."

Caro elaborated that while Warner Bros. and the creative teams behind the movie both acknowledge the criticisms that were levelled at BvS, they didn't scrap their plans and completely start over due to the backlash. Caro compared the story beats to ancient Greek tragedies and the Star Wars films in the vein of the hero (or heroes) being dealt a difficult obstacle before rising back up.

"If you play your story all at one level, there are no peaks and valleys, there’s no life. The great stories, the Greek tragedies, even life we have to be knocked down before we can build our way up. Justice League was always the rebirth of hope and the rise. People try to say that it’s a response to the backlash, and I’d definitely say that criticisms were heard, but it’s not like we threw everything out and started with a blank slate. It’s a bit like Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back? Dark movie! But then Return of the Jedi is the rise and the rebuilding of hope."

Time will tell whether Justice League will meet fan expectations; actress Gal Gadot teased on her Faceboook page over the weekend that a new trailer would be arriving "soon", though she offered no specifics. Justice League releases in theatres on November 17, 2017.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat.

Well this is what Zack Synder is doing for his trilogy mirroring the structure of the The Dark Knight trilogy, The Beginning, The Fall, and This Rise. While also adding his own twist with The Birth, The Death and The Rebirth (very Jesus like) of Superman, other DC characters like Batman and Wonder Woman, and even the world they live in.

Man of Steel is the beginning of Superman, starts with a birth of Clark and ends with the birth of Superman, it is birth/opening this world to Aliens and Metahumans. Man of Steel as a whole is a metaphor for the process of birth. Terraforming machines are the contraction the Earth is going through to give birth to Superman. MOS was through the eyes of the military.

BVS is the fall of Superman in the public eye and in himself, features a fallen Batman from is glory days, a fallen Wonder Woman who doesn't believe in man kind (the solo film being her The Beginning film, BVS being her Fall, JL being her Rise), begins with a death of the Wayne's and end with the death of Superman. The public/media/government not trusting/fallen Superman and Metahumans (SS could also count as that). BVS was through the eyes of the media.

JL (mostly guessing now) will be the Rise/Rebirth of Superman from his grave, Rebirth of Batman going back to his glory days, Wonder Woman's Rebirth into trusting humanity again, Rebirth of humanity trusting in superheroes, the Rise of the Justice League, the Rebirth of protectors/gods of planet Earth (as the beginning of the film will have a flash back to the old gods like Zeus, this comes from the set reports), will start with a rebirth of Batman (which is hinted at the end of BVS) and ends with the rebirth of Superman(which will allow them to both go on to their solo films like the characters that the fans/haters/moaners want them to be).

Man of Steel/pregnancy/birth is like a metaphor for the whole of the DCEU. The Earth/DCEU/Women has to go through pain and suffering but in the end it's worth it. That's what Zack's trilogy is going through the dark or The Dawn and will end up in the light or the birth of the universe that hater/moans/fans want, brighter films. Makes it even funny how our world is going on about the films, going through the hate. Justice League will be like the Rebirth issue from the comics that will then move on to the solo issues/films, The Batman, Aquaman, The Superman, etc.

Zack Synder was brought in to do a Superman trilogy that would work like the DK trilogy that I mentioned above, so you can see where he constructed it by having the origin as The Beginning, The Death of Superman storyline being The Fall and the Return of Superman being The Rise. Then the first Avengers film came out and changed everything into building a cinematic universe. So I can see the last one of his superman trilogy ending like Dark Knight Rises where they hint at a new Batman with John Blake, but instead having 4 new Supermen come along like in the comic book storyline. Hey but now they've swapped the Supermen with the Justice League, that's not bad. Superman is the beacon that the Justice League will rally around. Just like he was the first superhero in pop culture, and the rest followed, so too will the rest come to the surface in his wake in this movie universe. In MOS Kal found his path and decided to trust humanity by taking in their SUPERman role. In BvS Superman realised that taking on this role was not easy. He understood the hardship that comes with it. And now I think when he comes back in JL we will see the Superman who has fully realised who he is and what he stands for. There hasn't been any other superhero to go through this long route to get to the end goal. Most stories just drop the character there and tell stories.

This was a love letter to his favourite film Excalibur (1981) BVS is pretty much a remake of it and to his love of history as he did study in it. This film is a bible story, Superman being Jesus (Birth, Death, and Rebirth), the media/government being the Roman Empire that are manipulated by the Roman Emperor who would be Lex, General Zod (body) would be Judas the one that will betray and send Jesus/Superman to the cross (betray in the sense of being part of the same specie), the Cross/the final blow by a spear being Doomsday, JL members are Christians/followers/what Superman represents to the world, and finally having Batman as Paul the one who persecuted Christians which in this film would be Superman/Metahumans and then would become one, a Christian after having 'a coming to Jesus moment' which in the film would be where Batman realise he's become Joe Chill/Villain the one who killed his parents (Martha scene) and becomes a member of a forming JL.

Look Zack isn't a fantastic director in the sense of dialog or character building but I think he's made an ultimate visual poem of what would happen with modern mythology.

@JONALOTZRH - LMAO! What does that have to do with Excalibur! I loved that movie, and it has nothing to do with BVS.
