FIGHT CLUB Director David Fincher Says Marvel Movies Aren't For Everyone

Like it or not, there are many filmmakers out there who look down their noses at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For whatever reason, they're against the Marvel Studios formula of making movies (despite the fact audiences love them) and have no interest in making comic book adaptations set in that world as a result. Now, we can add David Fincher to the list of those unwilling to work with Kevin Feige.

During a recent interview to promote his new Netflix series Mindhunter, the Oscar-nominated director weighed in on why the online streaming service is ushering in a new wave of storytelling and took aim at Marvel Studios for being responsible for not allowing that in the current Hollywood system.

"Look, there’s a very large talent pool of people who are- don’t feel there’s much for them in terms of sustenance working for Marvel. And I think that if we can make a playground for them that is thoughtful, adult, interesting, complex, challenging stories and figure out ways to pull them into it, there’s a chance at something that isn’t lassoed and hogtied by three acts. And there’s something else that doesn’t have to be 22-minute half hour or have a cliffhanger. I think it is an exciting time."

Fincher's remarks are sure to upset many fans but he does make some sense here in fairness. Marvel Studios is well known for taking a great deal of creative control over its movies and while that's panned out for them both in terms of the critical and commercial response to them, it does mean directors are unable to be as creative as they may actually want to be (hence why Edgar Wright left Ant-Man).

What do you guys think of Fincher's comments? As always, let us know your thoughts down below.

I really don't think this should turn into a Marvel v DC flame war because I think he could apply this to all CBMs, Marvel just being the most prominent company at the moment.

@MarvelDCAllDay - He is talking very specifically about Marvel, tho.

@ThaIllest89 - Yeah but it doesn't leave room for a rebuttal except for maybe Fox fans

@MarvelDCAllDay - every cbm is made by Marvel, it seems, sometimes, to some people.

You know what this is? really it's a massive compliment to Marvel, and how powerful & influential they are. I remember when DC was only chugging out Batman movies and we got NOTHING else for superheroes.....now massively successful directors are calling them out by name for how stories are produced!?!? 'crazy times......fine time to be a superhero movie fan.

@write33 -

you're ABSOLUTELY right !

if Marvel wasn't good at making movies, they would be the laughing stock in Hollywood but no.
Everybody IS paying attention of what Marvel does.
Hate or Love it;
Marvel
is ruling the Comic Book Movie game right now.

@write33 - I think it is rather petty to blame Marvel, which has been releasing movies for only, what, 10 years-ish, for the 3-act movie and 22-minute tv show... both of which have been around for juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust a bit longer than 10 years.

Also, I kind of don’t think anyone of any intelligence has any delusions about what Marvel Studios is or what it is doing. If you are a director and you walk into their studio expecting to be able to do your own thing with 0 supervision and they will just hand you a bag of money and no reigns, then you are dumb. While they seem to work with a director’s vision to some extent, they clearly have a brand and it’s well known what type of product they make. You don’t have to like it, but it works.

If David Fincher’s brand of filmmaking was squashing everyone else’s product at the box office, I’m guessing he would be fine with that and not care that it was making things tough for those who were trying to do something different.

@TomSolo - I'd be fine with it too so long as it's "Seven" David Fincher and not "Alien 3" David Fincher ;-)........ but no, i agree. There is no studio to just hand over a bunch of cash / resources and say "bye! we hope you don't piss away our $10 - $50mil".....who would do that?!?! Nobody. Plus, Marvel has a vision of interconnectivity that no sutioud has ever attempted, so of course there are guidelines. Other studious don't but they're not aiming for such an ambitious universe as Marvel is..... Fox has clearly ignored continuity and WB struggles with it.......are those bad? eh, depends on your POV...

Also, i re-read his quote.....and yeah it's weird to mention Marvel and "3 Act movie / 22 minute show" in any sort of associated manner......you're spot on, that format? predates Marvel just a tad....
